Registration for Summer Intensive 2018 Religious Education will begin Feb 1st Summer Intensive 1 : July 9 – 13 & 16 – 20 Summer Intensive 2 : August 6 – 10 & 13 - 17

Grades available for the Summer Intensive Program: Grades 1‐6 (those children entering these grades in September 2018) on a first come, first serve basis. Families must be registered ac ve parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Educa on program for at least one year (with the excep on of first graders). However all families must be registered parishioners for at least 1 year prior to enrolling.

Times: Each session will include a Family Orienta on star ng with 12 noon Mass and ending at approximately 2 pm.  Session 1: Sunday, 8 July 12 noon Mass ‐ 2 pm  Session 2: Sunday, 5 August 12 noon Mass ‐ 2 pm Followed by classes Monday‐ Friday 8:30 am ‐12:30 pm.

Tui on:  

From Feb 1st 9 am through midnight March 31st the reduced tui on is $250 per child.

From April 1st through 7:30 pm May 15th the tui on rate of $300 a child will apply.

Program Expecta ons: Each family would be expected to par cipate in 4 intergenera onal events throughout the school year. Including the Advent and/or Lenten Penance and Reconcilia on services.

First Communion Meeting Tuesday, February 6 a meeting to discuss First Communion with the 2nd Grade parents.

There will be two sessions and you are free to attend whichever is more convenient for you. The first will be at 5:00 p.m. and the second will be at 6:30 p.m. Both will take place in the Theater in the parish center. Each will last approximately a half hour.

What are the roles of the cantor, the choir, and the congregation during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?

The role of the congregation is to respond in prayer, both sung and spoken, at the appropriate times during Mass. In the order of the Mass, this means: Entrance Antiphon • Kyrie • Gloria • Affirmations following the readings • Antiphon of the Responsorial Psalm • Acclamation before the Gospel • Sequences• Creed • Preface Dialogue • Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) • Memorial Acclamation • Amen • The Lord’s Prayer • Agnus Dei • Prayer before Communion • Communion Antiphon Affirmations to the Prayer after Communion, Solemn Blessings and dismissal In addition to above, there is also the singing of hymns or songs. While this is at first glance a daunting list, do remember that the Ordinary remains constant in terms of text, while the musical settings change seasonally.

The role of the cantor during Mass is more accurately described as a psalmist. The cantor sings the verses of responsorial psalm, the verse before the Gospel, and the verses of psalms sung during the entrance or communion processions. The cantor also plays a very important role in the liturgies of the Triduum, as the rubrics indicate certain texts and chants to be specifically sung by the cantor, sometimes even indicating the preference that there be two cantors, one male, one female.

Many carry the notion that the cantor leads the congregation during the singing of everything else, but this is a half-truth. At Low Masses, those without an organ, the cantor provides the visual and musical cues to the congregation and bolsters their singing. At Masses with an organ, the organist is the true leader of the congregation (more on the role of the organ in a future article), and the cantor as we commonly associate them as “song leader” is a luxury, but not a necessity. Try this next time you are at Mass: As the introduction to a piece of music starts, close your eyes or do not otherwise look at the cantor, and if you have a professional organist you will know when to start singing, at what tempo, and as the music continues, you will know whether or not the verse you are on is the final one.

The role of the choir is two-fold.

The first is to bolster the congregational singing, but to do so in a more refined and elegant manner; singing in many voice parts instead of unison, and adding descants and countermelodies as indicated by the composer.

The second is to sing the parts of the Mass or other selections not designed for congregational singing. This includes, but is not limited to, the singing of a polyphonic motet, hymn or other devotional piece before Mass, or following the Communion chant. A well-rehearsed choir can elevate mood of the worship environment and at certain times of the year it is of utmost necessity to have a robust choir!

It is my hope that these articles prove informative and useful. Next week we take a slight shift from all things of sound, and focus on sacred silence. Quo vadis…

Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The key to getting from our human condition (see the first reading) to being healed (gospel) is to “translate” (see Second Sunday in Ordinary Time) our sight from ourselves to Jesus. One view of paschal mystery living, then, is for each of us to go “off to a deserted place” to be with our God. It is in prayer, communion with God, that we come face to face with Jesus, get to know him and his mission, and allow it to seize us so that our own living is characterized by preaching the gospel.

Like those in the gospel who come to Jesus for healing, we all come to Jesus with expectations (after all, prayers of petition are the most common). The challenge is to move beyond our expectations to what Jesus really wants to give us—the good news of salvation. We need to allow Jesus’ presence to transform us so that our every breath is a proclamation of God’s saving mystery. Most of us would not go out to neighboring towns to preach. But we can smile a simple thank you to the tired cashier in the supermarket. We can bite our tongue rather than snap at the rambunctious children. We can do something thoughtful for someone when it is not expected. Like Jesus, we can be a living gospel.

My Own Church is a web based way for each parishioner household to manage their own information, such as telephone numbers, address, names of those in the household, ministries, etc…. I have been inviting all parishioners to launch this initiative for their families. Religious Education families must

launch this in order to register/re-register for RE programs.

I am grateful to all for your cooperation as we strive to serve you better and become more efficient in managing information.

Next weekend, the Church observes World Marriage Sunday. It is a way for us to pray for all married couples and those preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage. Marriage and Family Life is the cornerstone of the Church. Family Life has been designated by those at Second Vatican Council as the Domestic Church of the Home. This is where our faith is lived and taught. Let us encourage one another. We continue to welcome new parishioners to our parish. Next weekend is another New Parishioner Orientation. As ambassadors for Christ, join me in welcoming and encouraging these new members. A great big thank you to Jack and Rorie Coppola for their many years of oversight in preparing the Agape Sunday for our community. They have very generously shared their time and talent for us. When you see them take a moment to thank them. We are looking for coordinators of our Agape Sundays (about 8 times per year). Interested persons should contact Catherine at our parish office.

Ash Wednesday is 14 February. Begin to reflect on what you might “give up” for Lent and what you might “take on” for Lent. Take the time to prepare so that the Lenten Journey can be a fruitful time that is harvested during the Easter Season. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.
