St Blaise, Bishop and Martyr From the Book of Blessings, “Saint Blase was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia during the fourth century. Very little is known about his life. According to various accounts he was a physician before becoming a bishop. His religion spread throughout the entire Church in the Middle Ages because he was reputed to have miraculously cured a little boy who nearly died because of a fishbone in his throat. From the eighth century he has been invoked on behalf of the sick, especially those afflicted with illnesses of the throat.” The blessing of throats is a sacramental in the Catholic Church, occurring on February 3, the feast of St. Blaise. The blessing is conferred by a priest, deacon, or lay person, often with two candles placed on either side of a person’s throat, which are blessed on the preceding day, February 2nd, the Presentation of the Lord, in which candles that are to be used throughout the coming year are blessed.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. As the crowds doubted who Jesus was because of his simple origins, so will others doubt who we are if we courageously live the gospel. Again, if we never meet doubt or opposition then we must examine how committed to the gospel we are. Most of us are not called to “professionally” preach the good news. All of us, because of our baptism, are committed to living it. No matter what simple origins we might have, our living the gospel is what must shape our everyday choices. This means, for example, that if the chatter around the coffee machine at work grows uncharitable or course, we have the courage to walk away. Another example: if prejudice exists among our friends and acquaintances, we have the courage to extol the dignity of the minority. Dying to oneself means that we place gospel values before any others and are willing to put our lives on the line for them. We might not always concretely experience God’s protection and deliverance in the given moment; but we know from Jesus’ life that it is there when it really counts—leading us to life everlasting. Today, Sunday, 3 February is the Memorial of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. We will follow the ancient custom of blessing throats during the Sunday morning Masses. We have another four weeks until we begin the Liturgical Season of Lent. These weeks are an opportunity for our parish staff to assess the Advent-Christmas Season as we prepare for the Lent-TriduumEaster Seasons.

Dr. Bridges has prepared a Scripture Study focused on the Prophets. I would encourage adults to consider participation in the ongoing formation. Re-registration and registration of new families for our Summer RE programming is underway. We have streamlined the process and timeline in consideration of the feedback that we had received last year. I am grateful to all of those families who responsibly register so that we can be adequately prepared to offer the very best to our young people. I remind all that the summer program is becoming more and more popular here in our parish and throughout our diocese. Students are placed on a first come, first served basis. There are meetings in the coming weeks for liturgical ministers. I am grateful to Andrew for his pastoral oversight of this aspect of parish life. It is my hope that all will continue to grow in their faith through the service that is given to our parish. Training for new altar servers is scheduled to begin this month. We are in need of additional altar servers since most of our current servers are high school aged. It would be great if 15 or 20 candidates came forward to begin training. Parents of boys and girls who have received their First Holy Communion might encourage their children to consider this important service to our parish community. Those who are middle school aged are also welcomed and encouraged to consider this ministry in our parish. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

The “Tuesday Group” Celebrates Together On January 15, the “Tuesday Group” took Sr. Fran (Sr. Francis Lomeo, RGS) to a wonderful lunch at La Cashina to celebrate the blessings of Christmas and to thank her for sharing her beautiful faith with us every other Tuesday. It was also very appropriate to thank Treasure Herman, who leads the group on the alternate weeks. The participants truly benefit from the readings and thought provoking discussions each week, due to the efforts of both of these extraordinary women. All women are invited to join us on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. You’ll be glad you did!

Please bring soup and non-perishable food items to help Foodstock in Freehold stock their shelves for the hungry. Collection boxes will be in Gathering Space and outside of Madonna Hall near the Chapel. We’ll collect non-perishable items from Super Bowl Sunday, though Feb. 10th.

SPUR/Special People United to Ride The next general meeting for the Martha Mary Guild on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, will focus on ‘SPUR/Special People United to Ride’. It is a non-profit that was established in 1981 partnered with the Monmouth County Park System to support the therapeutic equestrian programs at Sunnyside Recreation Area known as ‘The Equestrian Center’, which is located on Middletown-Lincroft Road, Middletown, NJ, ‘The Sunnyside Recreation Area’ is comprised of 135 acres. The Equestrian Center facility opened in 2002 as a resource for all types of riders, horse owners. When not working in lessons, the horses can be found outside in herds. All the horses are ‘barefoot’ (shoeless) and slow feeder hay bags are used. The varied terrain and a turnout track help create the most natural living environment possible. Why not take a drive and visit with family, children, grandchildren to see this special place!?! Come to the meeting and you will learn more about it. The rosary is at 11:00 a.m. in the Spiritual Center Chapel and BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) will follow in Madonna Hall. There will be special desserts provided by generous members of the Guild. The program will begin around 12:30. Members are asked to bring contributions for “Fulfill” from the list.
