REMINDER Missionary Childhood Associa on (MCA) On‐Campus Religious Educa on Grades 1 & 2 and Confirma on Prepara on Grades 7 & 8 received the Mite Box in the Fall of 2017.

It was asked that, as a family, you make a sacrificial offering to assist those in need by contribu ng to the mite box during the school year and pray for those who are in need and seek your support.

The Antiphons. What are they and why should we sing them?

The propers of the Mass (the parts that change each week) are the second most important parts of the Mass to be sung, after the Ordinary (the Ordinary of the Mass employs texts that remain the same for every Mass). The antiphons and the verses that occur at the Entrance, Offertory, and Communion are prescribed in the Missal and are linked scripturally, thematically or theologically to the readings of the day.

The singing of the antiphons and verses fell out of fashion sometime after the implementation of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, despite the intentions of the council to foster full and active participation in Mass. Unclear language in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal left the doors of interpretation very wide open, and a lack of adequate settings of the newly translated text left many churches borrowing the Protestant tradition of singing hymns in these places. (Which, if you recall, was borrowed from the Catholic practice of hymnody at the liturgy of the hours).

Luckily, in the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal (2010-11), all things have been clarified and the propers have found their way back home. Many beautiful settings of the propers in English have been composed and you will find us singing some of them in the Lenten season. At Masses with the choir, the communion antiphon and its verses will be sung. Feel free to join in on the repeated refrains, or simply let the poetry of the text and the beauty of the music center you for the reception of Holy Communion.

The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat).

Fast—consume only one full meal.

Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain.

All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. When we make it a habit to key into the dying and rising of the paschal mystery we begin to see its rhythm everywhere. In this Sunday’s gospel it plays out between transfigured glory in the first part of the gospel and the allusion to Jesus’ dying in the last part. In our daily lives it might play out between work and leisure, between times with loved ones and times away, between success and failure, between doing something we would enjoy and doing something someone else would enjoy more. One thing Scripture bears out for us: whenever there is evidence of dying, there is equal evidence of rising. In our own lives we must begin to look for both the dying and the rising. As we see the paschal mystery unfolding more and more in our daily living, the distance between the religious and secular spheres of our lives becomes less and less. Instead of putting religion in a neat box, it becomes truly the very way we live. Then it becomes easier to let go of ourselves and let God lead us—whether that is to a mountain of testing or a mountain of dying.

We can let go, because we know without a doubt that new life and glory await us.

It is hard to believe that March is upon us!

During this month the Church observes the Memorial of Saint Patrick; the Solemnity of Saint Joseph; the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, customarily 25 March is transferred this year to 9 April. We move the clocks forward one hour in a couple of weeks…don’t forget!

Registration for the Summer Session Religious Education Intensive is well under way. Classes are filling up quickly. Please do not procrastinate in making your decisions. There is a limited number of openings for this formational opportunity. Please make your decisions now and register. Preparations for Holy Week have begun. Consider participating in these opportunities for communal prayer as a way to deepen your understanding of God’s creative and redemptive activity for the life of the world.

Daily Mass is celebrated in the Lenten Chapel Monday – Friday at 9:00 am. The Way of the Cross is prayed each Friday at 7:00 pm in the Lenten Chapel. The Black Books have all been taken. There remain a few copies of Matthew Kelly’s book that we are offering this Lent. The Parish Lenten Penance & Reconciliation Service is scheduled for Sunday, 18 March at 3:00 pm in our parish church. We try to schedule 16 or so priest confessors for your convenience. Please put this into your personal schedules and plan to participate. Parents, I encourage you to bring your children to this service as we celebrate God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Many thanks to all those who have participated in this year’s 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. If you have not done so, please do so as soon as possible. Consider joining us for the Way of the Cross or daily Mass during this Lenten Season.

Each parish is unique and offers religious educa on in ways that meet the needs of over 40,000 students in the local community. Some program structures are very tradi onal; others are innova ve. Over 600 adults in various stages of forma on were brought to full ini a on with the Church in our diocese last year. Many opportuni es for the enrichment of faith are found in events and ac vi es in parishes throughout the diocese, such as Bible Study, parish missions, lecture series, and online learning. These ministries help with adult faith enrichment by providing support for parish leaders and access to resources. Your gi , in essence, builds up our Catholic faith.

Together in Mission is a tool within our Diocese that has been created to help pastors, parish clergy and staff, parish ministry leaders and families become more inten onal about evangelizing at every phase of life.

Your gi supports this innova ve tool which impacts the real lives of Catholics growing in faith.

The New Day Bereavement Support Group Ministry of Consolation Invites You…to participate in a nine week program for those who are grieving the death of loved ones and want to work through the tasks of grief in a structured way using the New Day Journal, A Journey from Grief to Healing. The sessions include readings, reflection, sharing and journaling.

Future Genera on Early Learning Center located at the Parish of Saint Mary’s is currently in search of a qualified Teacher’s Assistant. All candidates must have experience working in the Early Childhood Educa on field and have a fun, energe c personality.

We are offering both Part Time and Full Time posi ons with compe ve pay within the industry.

Candidate must be flexible with schedule and comfortable working with children ages 2 – 13 years.

This is ideal for a college student that is working towards their degree in Educa on.

Discovering Christ is a seven‐week experience that invites people to explore the meaning of life and a personal rela onship with Jesus Christ.
