Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday (Feb. 26) and Good Friday (April 10).

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat): Feb. 28, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3, & Good Friday, April 10

Fast—consume only one full meal.

Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain.

All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Ash Wednesday This coming week, we observe Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, prayer, and penitence. There is an ancient tradition, in the times of the Old Testament, of people using ashes to express grief or sorrow for sins. Pope Gregory the Great is credited for starting the custom of imposing ashes on penitents in the 6th century.

In the time before the second the Second Vatican Council, ashes were usually sprinkled on the crown of the head of men, while women (who had their heads covered in church) received ashes on their forehead. This later custom soon became the norm in most English-speaking countries, although in some parts of the world, the former is still common.

The ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from burning the palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday services, and are mixed with olive oil to provide a thicker consistency. They are then blessed before the imposition on the faithful.

The imposition of ashes is a sacramental of the church. Sacramentals are sacred signs which signify effects of a spiritual nature, obtained through the intercession of the Church. (Sacrosanctum Concilium) While the bearer of ashes need not have them remain on their forehead throughout the entire day, many do, as an outward profession of faith.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. We belong to Christ; Christ belongs to God. We must know and remember that the Christian Community is the temple of God, where the Holy Spirit dwells, if we want to correctly understand and rightly live as brothers and sisters, with each one shouldering his or her responsibilities in the community. This is not some mere formula attempting to sublimate concrete problems, to dissolve them in a mystical nebula. The community belongs to no one, to no priest, no apostle. These are sent to be of service to the community, of the building of the Temple of God. “All belong to you, and you to Christ, and Christ to God.” Ash Wednesday is observed this coming week.

There are a lot of opportunities available to assist you during the Season of Lent. The Schedule of services are printed in the bulletin.

We have included the Ash Wednesday Schedule for the Parishes of Cohort 13 (Masses and Services) for your convenience. Also, we have included the Way of the Cross schedules for the parishes within our co-hort. We will have meditation books in the Lenten Chapel for those wishing to offer these prayers privately. We will continue the custom of the outdoor Way of the Cross on Good Friday. Black books as well as Rice Bowls to benefit Catholic Relief Services will be distributed in the coming weeks.

Remember, Lent is about abstaining as well as doing something. Make the most of this year’s Lenten journey.

Registration for the 2020 - 2021 Summer Intensive Religious Education Program has begun. Please register your child/ren this

week in order to secure a spot. Remember that registration is first come first served. Please do not procrastinate.

This weekend we kick off the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) 2020. Our goal remains once Again AT $75,000.00.

You should have received information in the mail already. Please take time to review it. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton will address us via DVD during all of the Masses this weekend. I had the opportunity, along with several other pastors, to share your concerns about directing your gift to the appeal. The Bishop and his advisors listened attentively.

You will notice on the pledge/gift card that you may designate where your gift is directed. You may be thinking…so, how do we know? Well I can say from my time working in the Diocesan Chancery as well as my time serving as pastor, when a financial gift is “restricted” the auditors certify that what has been received for a certain purpose is only used for the given stated purpose. That is how we can be certain that our gift is directed to the specified fund. Thank you for sharing so generously in support of our Bishop, Diocese, and Parish. Remember that we receive a percentage rebate when we attain the goal and above. Our parish did not achieve the goal in 2019 and therefore have a $11,000.00 gap in our current fiscal year budget.

Thank you for your sharing so that our Catholic Church will continue to serve the needs in our four counties of Monmouth, Mercer, Burlington, and Ocean.

Attention Men! Join other Catholic men from across the Diocese of Trenton at the 23rd Annual Men’s Conference on Saturday, February 29, at St. Mary, Mother of God Parish, 19 Cherry Tree Farm Rd., Middletown.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Discipleship: The Greatest Adventure”. The day runs from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and will feature Holy Mass celebrated by Bishop David O’Connell; Mark Teixeira, former Yankee first baseman and MLB All Star, and current ESPN analyst; Marcelliano D’Ambrosio AKA Dr. Italy, an author, evangelist and the funniest theology professor you will ever meet; and Stephen Auth, the CIO for Federated Global Equities and author of the Missionary of Wall Street. There will also be music, Catholic vendors, and the opportunity to fellowship with other men who are looking to grow in their walk with Jesus and dynamically live out their Catholic faith. A youth breakout session will also be offered for young men from 8th grade to college age. The cost is $30 per person in advance and $35 at the door, $15 for students. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
