Chants, Canticles, Hymns & Songs These are the 4 main types of music that are congregational sung during Mass. There are also motets and other choral styles that are offered by the choir on certain occasions.

Chants - the official music of the Roman Catholic church. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal: The main place should be given, all things being equal, to Gregorian chant, as being proper to the Roman Liturgy.

Chants - are monophonic (one-voice, that is, without harmony) and taken directly from the Missal. In our modern age, many composers have added organ accompaniments to the chants, or added choral harmony to the original chanted line.

Canticles - songs from the bible. These are taken directly from scripture and appropriately sung at various times of the year. 2 very common canticles are the Canticle of Mary, otherwise known as the Magnificat (My soul doth magnify the Lord…) and is sung during vespers, and some dates throughout the church year, and the Nunc dimittis (Lord, let your servant go in peace) also sung at several offices and on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.

Hymns - the most common form of musical worship today. Most hymns are written in a 4-part structure, wherein many of the melodic lines repeat themselves in the course of a verse, which lends to them being quickly learned. Almost all hymns are also harmonized for 4-part choir or larger, and most often intended to be sung a cappella or with organ, as the organ is “accorded pride of place” because of its capacity to sustain the singing of a large gathered assembly, due to both its size and its ability to give “resonance to the fullness of human sentiments, from joy to sadness, from praise to lamentation.” Likewise, “the manifold possibilities of the organ in some way remind us of the immensity and the magnificence of God.” (USCCB) The text of hymns are generally paraphrased from various scriptural sources, but may also be a completely original text or a combination of both.

Songs - the most modern form of music found in the church, many songs are written in a 1960s era folk style, favoring guitar and keyboard instruments rather than organ, and are not always written with congregational or choral singing in mind. The texts of many songs reflect the thoughts and feelings of the composer and do not as frequently borrow from sacred sources as the other styles of compositions. Still, there are times when these songs are occasionally appropriate for use during Mass or other occasions of corporate or private worship.

Celebrate Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week 2020 has arrived, and elementary and high schools in the Diocese of Trenton are eager to share what makes them the best choice for educating faith-filled Catholic citizens.

Running from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, Catholic Schools Week activities will include open houses, pep rallies, assemblies, activity fairs, spelling bees, community service projects and a myriad of academic showcases designed to spotlight how faith and academic excellence combine into the most valuable model of childhood education.

In his 2020 Catholic Schools Week message, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., writes: “The gift and grace of Catholic education introduces us to what is possible in Christ. That is what our Catholic faith does and what Catholic schools offer. The Bishop will visit several Catholic schools and celebrate Masses with their communities during Catholic Schools Week. Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: This week is the Fourth week in Ordinary Time. It is awesome to think that our own puny efforts at mercy, justice, and righteous living are one means for bringing God’s blessedness to others! Simply sharing in God’s work of salvation—providing for those in need—is a blessing in itself. We can afford to jump in and get our feet wet because we are not only dependent upon our own resources, but share with others what God has already provided for us. Here’s the truly amazing part: the blessedness we share now is but a taste of our great reward in heaven!

Today we celebrate the Feast of Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas Day). We recall the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple fulfilling what had been prophesied and fulfilling the expectation of Simeon and Anna.

It is that we encounter the Nunc dimittis…

“At last, all-powerful Master, + you give leave to your servant to go in peace, according to your promise. For my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared for all nations, the light to enlighten the Gentiles and give glory to Israel, your people.”

It is customary that we bless candles as a reminder that Christ is the Light of the World.

The following day is the optional memorial of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. Throats will be blessed during the regularly scheduled 9 am Mass which will be celebrated in the Church on Monday, 3 February 2019.

“Through the intercession of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr, may Almighty God deliver you from every disease of the throat and every other illness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Our parish Faith Formation Staff have begun to offer registration/re-registration for our Summer Session Religious Education Program.

This registration is first come first served based on space availability. Registration for other options will commence in the coming months.

I am pleased that we will be offering options to our parish families that will be supported by trained, formed and certified catechetical leaders and catechists. May we continue to provide the very best so that the mission of our church might continue to grow.

Last weekend we provided an overview of the 2019 Christmas Collection. The numbers were very solid and demonstrate the commitment that you have for our parish. As always thank you for your generous sacrificial stewardship.

Later this month we will have a Parish Eucharistic Day in preparation for the Season of Lent.

Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament is an important part of our Catholic Liturgical Spirituality. More details to follow in the coming weeks. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff.

Tuesdays at 10:00 am- 11:45 am Room #17 All women are invited Join us for spiritual reading, discussion, praying & fellowship.

Facilitators take turns leading the group: Sr. M. Francis Lomeo, RGS (Sisters of the Good Shepherd) Treasure Herman With Sr. Fran, we read an inspirational book (selected by the group) and discuss it.

With Treasure, we use “At Home with the Word” and “Exploring”, which follows the weekly gospels and incorporates thoughtful questions for the group to ponder and discuss how this particular gospel “works” in our own lives.

Prayer time where everyone has the opportunity to offer their intentions is also incorporated.

"Wrap it up” is around 11:45 am when all are invited to go to lunch together. Spiritual Reading is a close-knit group, and everyone (new joiner or old member) is made to feel welcomed, loved & prayed for!

Michele Lawson Wig Warriors Maureen S. Konopko Foundation Unfortunately, too many families have someone dear to them that have or had cancer. Most of us are “paralyzed” with fear.

Michele Lawson took action in honor of her mom’s courageous battle with cancer.

Michele became a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, and then started the Wig Warriors Maureen S. Konopko Foundation, whose beautiful motto is “Empowering women to navigate the cosmetic side effects of cancer treatments.” As the owner of “Hair & Co.” in Red Bank, Michele and her wonderful staff provide many free services for cancer patients – such as: wigs, scarves, head wraps, head coverings, hair cutting & shaving and make-up classes – to boost the spirits of these women! Michele is going to share some of her memorable experiences with the Martha Mary Guild on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

In 2015, Pope Francis wrote his encyclical letter entitled Laudato Si'...On Care for Our Common Home. He addressed this encyclical letter to Catholics as a call to better care for each other and the environment in which we live. His goal was to open a dialogue about how we are shaping the future of planet earth, our common home. We believe that climate change is the greatest social injustice of our time.

The Human Concerns/Social Justice committee of St. Anselm's Parish, Wayside has committed to open and continue this dialogue via informative monthly sessions to educate and provide resources to you. We have formed a small but active group calling ourselves the Creation Care Team.

We have pledged to continue these informative sessions for the coming year on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 2 pm Monica Mazurczyk monimaz14@gmail.com

All are welcome to come to the Spiritual Center at 11:30 a.m. for the rosary (dedicated to cancer patients this month). BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) will be in Madonna Hall at noon, with refreshments provided by the Guild. Michele will begin around 12:30.

Our generous Guild members are asked to bring donations for Wig Warriors Maureen S. Konopko Foundation – scarves, head wraps, combs, brushes, hair picks, make up.

Saint Mary Parish Sewing Circle Next meeting is February 11 & 25 The ministry meets in Meeting Room #11 twice a month (Meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 1- 3 pm.

Couples Night Out The St Benedict’s Marriage Ministry is hosting a Couples Night Out Dinner Dance on Friday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m. at Jacques Reception Center, Middletown.
