Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat).

Fast—consume only one full meal.

Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain.

All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

REMINDER Missionary Childhood Associa on (MCA) Fall of 2017 the on Campus Religious Educa on Grades 1 & 2 and Confirma on Prepara on Grades 7 & 8 received the Mite Box. It was asked that, as a family, you make a sacrificial offering to assist those in need by contribu ng to the mite box during the school year and pray for those who are in need and seek your support.

Towards the end of the RE School Year count what was collected in your mite box and instead of returning the mite box, please make one check payable to St Mary Parish with the nota on ‘MCA’ in the memo line. Please enclose the check in an envelope and send it with your child on the FIRST class back a er Easter Break. St Mary Parish will in turn send one check to the Missionary Childhood Organiza on.

What changes are made with the music during Lent?

As we begin the holy penitential season of Lent, there are notable shifts in the tone of music at Mass. The two most obvious differences are:  The abstaining from the Gloria and all instances of Alleluia  The silence before and after Mass, and less organ in general Here are some explanations for why we do this. First, the Gloria is a hymn of praise to the Triune God, very triumphant in character and jubilant in text. As Lent is a season where the Church teaches us to focus on penitence, we omit this piece.

(There are 2 notable exceptions to this rule: The Solemnities of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and The Annunciation of the Lord occur during Lent, and the Gloria is sung on these days. This year, 2018, The Annunciation falls during Holy Week so it is actually transferred to April.)

We also omit the Alleluia before the Gospel and all instances of the Alleluia during any hymns or chants. This rule is not suspended for the two above-mentioned solemnities.

In addition, we would also refrain from singing the Te Deum or any other hymn of great joyful praise. We sing hymns and chants of penitence, pleading for mercy, etc.

The second noticeable difference is in the playing of the organ. There are no preludes or postludes during Lent, reeds and mixtures are not used, and the organ is used only to support the congregational singing. There are no extended instrumental offertories. Again, we abstain from the full joy that comes from a properly played organ, and the organist plays only what is necessary to serve the functions of the Mass.

One additional change we make is the singing of the Communion Antiphon and its verses at masses with choir. These propers of the mass have been forgotten by many Catholic churches over the years, and as a parish community it is imperative that we become more in line with the universal church. More on what these antiphons are, and their function, in next week’s article.

Until then, I urge you to sing with all your heart, soul, and voice. Consider joining the music ministry, even if only for the seasons of Lent or Easter.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. The first two readings this Sunday suggest that our entry into the desert and the injunction to proclaim the gospel are the consequence of baptism. In the baptismal waters, we are plunged into the death of Christ to rise to the risen life that renews the earth.

Baptism is our entry into the death/resurrection mystery of Christ and our entry in Lent and Easter. We begin Lent by reminding ourselves that we are a baptized people; at the end of Lent we renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil. Christ led the way; we only need to make the choice (effort) to follow.

This weekend our 40 day journey through the Season of Lent begins and concludes sundown on Holy Thursday. It is my hope that we make the most of this grace-filled opportunity.

Abstaining (giving up) something can be a very fruitful exercise. Choosing to do something can also be very fruitful. I encourage you to try one of each, giving up and doing something extra. I invite you to consider receiving the Holy Eucharist more frequently by coming to Mass for the Sunday Sabbath and throughout the week. I would like us to consider this as a communal act for Lent: Namely, as a worshipping community coming to Mass on time; that is, 5 minutes before the start of Mass; using the lavatories at that time; writing intentions for the burden basket at that time; taking your place in the pew prior to the priest presider beginning with the sign of the cross so that we are not climbing over those who have arrived on time. Considering this would be a great act of respect for the sacred action we are

celebrating when we pray the Mass. I realize this can only happen if you make it a priority. I offer this suggestion as a way for us to grow in our respect for God and one another. Remember that we depart Mass during Lent in reverent silence.

Give it a try…who knows?

Our Lenten Chapel has been set up to accommodate an increased number of participants for the daily Mass as well as for the Friday evening Way of the Cross. I am grateful to Helen DeCerce and Lou DeGeorge for cleaning the ambo which was given to our parish when the church building was first erected and used for many years; and to Drew Weber for the altar which he made from a design I provided. This year we will hang an icon of the Blessed Virgin that comes to us from Christians in the Holy Land. Our purchase of this icon enhances our prayer while supporting those Christians who continue to live in the Holy Land.

I am grateful to Jack and Rorie Coppola for their generous and gracious stewardship overseeing our Parish Agape. We are seeking others to learn from them in overseeing this important community building opportunity. Jack has been involved in the agape for 20 years. It is important that others step up to help oversee these church events. Thank you for your openness to the message of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton presented this weekend via video messaging. The Annual Catholic Appeal aids our bishop in serving the needs throughout our 4 county Diocese of Trenton.

Please consider making your pledge this week to assist our parish in achieving our goal. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.
