Ash Wednesday This coming week, we observe Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, prayer, and penitence. There is an ancient tradition, in the times of the Old Testament, of people using ashes to express grief or sorrow for sins. Pope Gregory the Great is credited for starting the custom of imposing ashes on penitents in the 6th century. In the time before the second the Second Vatican Council, ashes were usually sprinkled on the crown of the head of men, while women (who had their heads covered in church) received ashes on their forehead. This later custom soon became the norm in most English-speaking countries, although in some parts of the world, the former is still common. The ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from burning the palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday services, and are mixed with olive oil to provide a thicker consistency. They are then blessed before the imposition on the faithful. The imposition of ashes is a sacramental of the church. Sacramentals are sacred signs which signify effects of a spiritual nature, obtained through the intercession of the Church. (Sacrosanctum Concilium) While the bearer of ashes need not have them remain on their forehead throughout the entire day, many do, as an outward profession of faith. Sacramentals should not be confused with Sacraments or obligations. The receiving of ashes is an optional symbol of our faith - the more true importance of the day is on inner reflection on how we may observe the Lent.

Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs, d. 1597 During the 1550s, St. Francis Xavier evangelized much of Japan and made hundreds of thousands of converts to Christianity. Some forty years later, one of those, Paul Miki, a Jesuit scholastic studying for the priesthood, and twenty-five others died for their faith at Nagasaki. The group included Jesuit and Franciscan priests, brothers, laymen, a doctor, teachers, a soldier, old people, and young altar servers. Their nationalities included Spaniards, a Mexican, and an Indian, as well as native Japanese. Of this group of twenty-six, Paul Miki became the best known. As he was dying on the cross, Paul, who was native Japanese, preached to the crowds and prayed for his executioners. The Shõgun who had these martyrs killed wished to wipe out Christianity in Japan, calling it a religion brought by foreigners intending to conquer the country. A great show was made of the killing. The victims were maimed and then led, bloodied, through several towns to a hill, known today as Holy Mountain, for their execution. This action was meant to terrorize the people into giving up their Christian faith. When missionaries returned to Japan almost – Read More HERE.

Lenten Regulations - Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal per day) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash

Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 29). All other Fridays of Lent (February 16 through March 22) are days of abstinence (no meat). Fast—consume only one full meal. Water may be taken throughout the day Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain. Those who are automatically dispensed from fast and abstinence regulations outside the age limits noted above include: the physically or mentally ill, especially individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also included in the dispensation are women who are pregnant or nursing. In all cases, common sense should prevail and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Reviews are in for the “Jesus and the Eucharist” 7 week Eucharist Study! “Watching the commentaries and testimonies in the video made me think of Faith as a lockbox that each one of us carries inside. We all have it but sometimes we are not aware of it. We may one day embark on a search for the key to it, turn it, and be ready for a life-changing experience that will forever transform us. Faith is a gift, a treasure that puts us mortals in touch with the infinite and the Eternal.” - R.Z. “I particularly liked Session 7. The emphasis on Eucharistic Adoration for Jesus to give us the courage and strength to cope with our own issues, but also to be able to go out to spread the words to others. I liked when the video likened the Mass to a ‘taste of heaven.’ That earth and heaven kiss.” - L.L. “Reinforced my knowledge of real presence in the Eucharist and the need to evangelize this now. Happy to know there are many devout Catholics very involved with the Eucharistic Revival.” - T.M. “This course has been a blessing to me. It has shown me many connections in the Bible I have never noticed. It has allowed me to better feel His presence and love for me. It has also made me view the Eucharist in a new light. For that I am grateful.” - C.W. “Thank you so much for leading this wonderful course, Barbara. The video presentation was beautifully done, and I found it to be very inspiring.” - K.W. “I found the program very enlightening and enriching related to my past knowledge and devotion to the Eucharist. The Masses I have attended since the sessions have more meaning, and I am grateful for the new insight. I will attend another gathering soon. Thank you.” - Francine “Reinforced my knowledge of the real presence in the Eucharist and the need to evangelize this now. Happy to know there are many devout Catholics very involved with the Eucharistic Revival.” T.M. “This course has been a blessing to me. It has shown me many connections to the Bible I have never noticed. It has allowed me to better feel the presence and love for me. It has also made me view the Eucharist in a new light, and for that I am grateful.” - C.W.

A Mini Retreat for the Soul - Martha Mary Guild As part of a special program for the beginning of Lent, Barbara Schaflin, Program Chair and member of the Women's Morning Office group, will present a way to pray the "Litany of the Hours". This will be very appropriate for the Martha Mary Guild's February meeting, since it is on Ash Wednesday (February 14)! Since it is Ash Wednesday, our meeting will begin in Church, where we will attend the noon Mass together and receive ashes. All women of the parish and our Cohorts are welcome to join us in the left rear of the church. Due to the Mass, the rosary will not be said at this meeting, but we will resume that beautiful custom in March. Since 1990, Barbara Schaflin has been a part of the Women's Morning Office. When Covid hit, she created Prayer pieces for the women to use during weekly Zoom sessions. At the February meeting, she will share a very special piece, based on Macrina Wiederkehr's book, Seven Sacred Pauses. Perhaps it will transform our practice of being present and paying attention to the sacred rhythms of the day. We are looking forward to seeing many of you at Mass and then in Madonna Hall for the meeting. As usual, it's BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch), with refreshments supplied by the Guild. The next (12-week) training class for telephone volunteers for CONTACT (24-hour crisis intervention hotline) will begin on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, once a week for 12 weeks, every Wednesday from 6:30 -9:30 P.M. In person training will be held at St. Luke’s Church,1674 Old Freehold Rd., Toms River, NJ 08755. CONTACT, a free and confidential service, has been assisting with the needs of individuals throughout the community since 1975, by providing a safe place for callers to talk about their problems with anonymity. Information and referrals are provided when requested. For additional information, please call the office: (732) 240-6104.
