Hello silence my old friend… Diverging from music for a moment, this week’s focus will be on sacred silence. The lack of organized sound is just as important as the moments of oration and music in the church. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal calls for periods of silence during the Mass: 56. The Liturgy of the Word is to be celebrated in such a way as to favor meditation, and so any kind of haste such as hinders recollection is clearly to be avoided. In the course of it, brief periods of silence are also appropriate, accommodated to the assembled congregation; by means of these, under the action of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God may be grasped by the heart and a response through prayer may be prepared. It may be appropriate to observe such periods of silence, for example, before the Liturgy of the Word itself begins, after the First and Second Reading, and lastly at the conclusion of the Homily. The reason for these periods of silence is evident in the paragraph from the General Instruction. In addition to these called for by the Universal Church, there are additional periods of silence that must be observed. Above all, sacred silence must be observed in sacred space. Whenever a person enters the church, they are to remain in silence. When we enter the church prior to Mass, we sit or kneel, and we pray. We do not engage in conversation or other noisy activity. This is true before Mass, during Mass (except when we are in communal prayer or song), and after Mass. After the final blessing and dismissal, there is sometimes a hymn, sometimes an instrumental recessional, sometimes no music. Regardless of what happens after the dismissal, silence is paramount. For those who sing the final hymn (and that should be all of us), we do so in fervent praise to the Lord. For those who choose to leave after the priest departs from the church, they should do so in silence. Hold the conversation for outside the sacred space. Likewise, when the hymn or instrumental piece has concluded, it should echo in the silence of the space. Conversation is inappropriate and applause is even worse! There is no performance, only worship. To break that silence prevents those who wish to pray from doing so in a reverent manner. To applaud a person is to wrongly shift the focus from Almighty God to a humble servant. When you come to Mass, whether at your home church or otherwise, remember to sing, remember the silence, and remember why you are there: your offerings to God, and communal worship with your fellow Catholics. I thank you all for your continued support of your parish and hope you will join us in reverent prayer during the upcoming Lenten season and throughout the year. Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship / Organist

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The gospel begins with a leper—one who cries “Unclean!” and must remain a social outcast. The gospel ends with Jesus taking upon himself the infirmities of humanity symbolized by his “remain[ing] outside in deserted places.” Living the paschal mystery means changing “if you wish” to “I do will it” and then having heaped upon ourselves the infirmities of humanity. Jesus commands the leper to tell no one; the leper tells everyone. Jesus’ commission to us is to tell everyone the good news—do we tell no one? We must change our “wish” to “I do will it.” Paschal mystery living means taking up our cross and actually doing what Jesus did—willing the good of others. Ash Wednesday is upon us this coming week. Take note of the worship schedule for your convenience. We have re-printed the guidelines of the Universal Church as communicated from the Office of the Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton to assist you during this season and also as a means of information as to why some things are scheduled as they are scheduled. Also, consider coming to Mass each day for Lent and/or praying the Way of the Cross as part of your personal Lenten Observance. During the Season of Lent we will be celebrating daily Mass in the “Lenten Chapel” set up in the parish hall. The reason for this is that Christ Chapel is too small; the Church is too large. The Lenten Chapel will
accommodate our needs based on the attendance at daily Mass last yea and will encourage our prayerful participation and singing. The Way of the Cross will also be prayed in this Lenten Chapel. Come and celebrates the opportunity and gift of receiving Holy Communion each weekday during the Season of Lent. During the Season of Lent the liturgical color is violet. We refrain from singing the Glory to God on Sundays so the gathering rites are simple and quick. The recessional is in silence to provide a more somber atmosphere. Please be respectful of the need for silence. Next weekend we KICKOFF the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal, and we will view the video message from His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, inviting our participation once again. I pray that each of us will be open to this invitation by participating as best we can to support our Bishop and the important works of our diocese. Through this fund, our diocese has been able to carry some of our parishes during times of financial distress. Let us be mindful of the good works that are accomplished when we come together. The Roman Catholic Church continues to be the largest (non-governmental agency) provider of charitable services and care throughout the world. This is something that we must continue to support and nurture in our lives and the lives of our children and young people. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday! Peace. Father Jeff
