Wake O Wake and sleep no longer….

A popular hymn during Advent is Wachet auf ruft uns die stimme.

A hymn composed by Phillipp Nicolai in 1598, its standard harmonization by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1731, the text recalls the parable of the foolish virgins who did not bring enough oil for their lamps, and missed the bridegroom and his feast. There are also allusions to the words of the prophet, Isaiah, of the voice crying out in the desert, and references to the book of Revelation, the wedding feast of the Lamb, and His bride, the Church.

The hymn in verse is only one setting of this popular tune. Bach composed an entire cantata around Nicolai’s music, there have been several organ arrangements and orchestral treatments, as well as solo renditions. The staying power of this hymn is a testament to not only it’s careful composition, but also to its prayerful text.

Our Lady of Guadalupe - text by Lucille Castro Traditional belief holds that on December 9, 1531 Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an indigent Aztec Indian, near Mexico City. Mary's image appeared on his tilma, a very poor quality cactus-cloth worn by poor people of that area. The native people were considered as the lowest in society and were terribly oppressed by people in power. Mary's appearance to this poor man to bring her message to people in power showed clearly that God does not classify people as society sometimes does. This window reminds us of our call to respect all people regardless of society's rankings and to work for the dignity of all. The window also reminds us of Mary's message of love and compassion, and her universal promise of help and protection for all people.

Sometimes working for God can be tricky. For Elizabeth and Mary, it came with obstacles that required much trust. The same was true for Juan Diego. The Blessed Mother didn’t ask anything of Juan that she didn’t have to go through herself — to put his complete trust in God and put himself into a situation in which he wasn’t completely comfortable. But, as God always does, God provided what was needed in order for the mission to be completed through the intercession of Mary. How do the stories of Elizabeth, Mary, and Juan Diego inspire you? Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. Last Sunday’s gospel directed our attention to the end times and gave us a glimpse of those times, both in terms of the calamities that will befall those who are not ready as well as the promise of safety and security for those who are vigilant.

This Sunday both the gospel and first reading give us a glimpse of the fullness of the end days. Our natural tendency is to want to get to the fullness and bypass the hard work of daily dying to self that is required to reach the glory and joy that is promised. Let’s be honest: it’s not just the busyness of Christmas preparations now in full December fury that distract us from our ongoing work of repentance. Every day of the year we tend to be distracted by mountains of work, paths of indecision, valleys of doubt and fear. This would be a good Sunday in Advent to take some special time to reflect on God’s forgiveness and mercy and how it is God who gives sure direction to our lives and will eventually bring us home to eternal glory if we are faithful partners in the gospel. Our Advent watchfulness and waiting includes taking time to rest in the security of God’s nearness.

Don’t forget to make time for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession) before Christmas.

Our Advent Parish Penance and Reconciliation Service is Sunday, 9 December 2018 at 3:00 pm. I believe that there will be 16 or so priests available for individual confession. What an awesome sacrament this is for us as we prepare to welcome Christ into

our life this Christmas. This coming week the universal church observes, 12 December, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. It is one of the rare images depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary as a pregnant woman anticipating the birth of her child. What a beautiful image for all of us to consider during this joyful season of preparation.

Next weekend we will have the annual Light Up a Memory Mass Saturday at 4:00 pm followed by the lighting of the Tree on our parish grounds. The Annual Pancake Breakfast will be Sunday Morning following the 8:00 am & 10:00 am Masses. Please purchase your tickets online today. Once the website link is shut, tickets will not be available until the morning of the event at the door as we are able to accommodate those wishing to participate. Please anticipate your needs and plan in advance.

Kudos to all of our parishioners for your faithfilled and generous response to the Advent Tree of Love. I know that there are a number who are also involved with the Adopt a Family Program through our parish. Thank you for sharing with the poor and needy in our midst.

We accomplished much work with 26 volunteers.

Thank you Parishioners, Scouts and Knights of Columbus for helping out at the Fall Clean up held on Saturday Dec 1, 2018. Your willingness to give your time made a difference in the condition of the parish grounds. We lucked out. The weather was perfect for a December day!! All the ornamental grasses in the grotto were cut back. Leaves, pine cones, debris and branches were collected from rear of buildings and on the North side of the property, umbrellas from the courtyard were removed and Christmas decorations were moved from the garages and shed to the parish buildings.

Much was accomplished indeed!

Thank you to all who brought equipment – blowers, chainsaws, tools and tarps that helped make the clean-up run more smoothly.

Monmouth Civic Chorus at Martha Mary - December 12

Through this year's efforts towards the Parish of St. Mary's Thanksgiving food drive, we were able to feed over two hundred families this year.

The breakdown is as follows: 200 bags of Thanksgiving groceries and 160 turkeys  55 bags to St. Peter Claver  54 bags to Open Door  27 bags to CPC  25 bags to Mar n House  30 bags to Renee Mar n An addi onal 25 bags of miscellaneous groceries were sent to Mar n House.

We had over 40 volunteers on Friday evening to sort and bag food as well as help to decorate the Advent Tree of Love. The men, women, and children ranged from preschool children up to grandparent aged adults. We also had a nice sized group of daily Mass a endees who stayed and joined the small group of volunteers who came to load the vans and trucks for deliveries to the various chari es.

Thank You to all those who donated food, money, and/or volunteered their me in order to make this effort a success. Thank you Delicious Orchards for their dona on of fresh produce as well as Kings Barber Shop in Colts Neck for their food dona on.

This was a nice opportunity to bring the parish and the community together in providing for the less fortunate.

Pictured above are some of the members of the Monmouth Civic Chorus’ Caroling Corps, who will be entertaining us with delightful Christmas music at the December 12th meeting of the Martha Mary Guild. They will surely get us into the holiday spirit, with 45 minutes of pure joy!

Another special feature of the December meeting is a wonderful tradition of bringing baby gifts for Birthright. The members are always so generous and the “new mommies” sure appreciate it.

There will also be special treats to consume and enjoy after we participate in BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). All ladies of the parish are cordially invited to join us at 11:30 am for the rosary in the Spiritual Center Chapel, followed by lunch in Madonna Hall.

The “songfest” will begin right after lunch.

Hannah de Groot, a senior at Penn State University and active parishioner is very involved in Penn State's THON-- a 46-hour dance marathon, held in February, benefitting childhood cancer. The clothes will be processed by A&E Clothing Corporation which specializes in processing used clothing and goods based on the weight of the contribution.

There will be a collection box in the Gathering Space to receive donations from Nov. 19 - Dec. 14.
