Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the theological Catholic belief that the Virgin Mary was conceived without the stain of original sin, and therefore pre-destined to carry the Son of God in her womb. Although the belief that Mary was without sin was held since the middle ages, it was not until 1854, when Pope Pius IX declared in his papal bull, Ineffabilis Deus, that Mary was indeed conceived without original sin, speaking with papal infallibility and thus creating a dogma of the Catholic Church. “We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.” The day is the patronal feast of the United States and a Holy Day of Obligation.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. Some success John was: he diverted attention from himself to Jesus and ended up beheaded for his efforts! Proclaimed repentance, prepared for Jesus, died— this is the pattern of John’s life. Actually, it’s the pattern of Jesus’ life, too: proclaimed, prepared the way to the Father, died. Further, it’s the pattern of our own paschal mystery living: proclaim the gospel of repentance, prepare for Christ’s second coming, die to ourselves. Our being baptized “with the Holy Spirit” enables us to do the work of God, for in baptism our lives are grafted onto Christ. In baptism we become heralds, like John, of Christ’s redeeming presence in our world. By our Christian living (blamelessly and with righteousness) we proclaim how we prepare for Christ’s second coming. But even more: being baptized in the Spirit makes us members of Christ’s very body. We not only point to Christ, but we also make present the Christ who dwells in us! The Liturgical Season of Advent has two distinct parts: the first focuses on the Second Coming of Christ and our preparation for that event whenever it should come; the second, is preparing ourselves for the birth of Jesus more than two millennia ago. It is in this way that we are not called to merely look back at the historical birth of Jesus of Nazareth; but also to be mindful of how that historical event has shaped human history calling us to be heralds of the Kingdom of God, now and in the life to come. With all of the hype surrounding this time of the year, it is important that we not lose this spiritual dimension or interior call to conversion. The images of Advent are among the most powerful and inviting as any throughout the Church’s Liturgical Year. So, as we shop, cook, bake, clean, wrap, decorate…do it with gratitude for the blessings that we have, remember those who might be struggling, keep an
eye fixed on our call to personal conversion as we ready for Christ to Come Again! Join us this Sunday afternoon for our Parish Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service at 3 pm in our parish church building. It is THE moment for us to approach this Sacrament of God’s Mercy & Healing. We have invited sixteen (16) priests for your convenience. Please make this a priority for you, your children, and family members. Invite a friend or family member who may feel alienated or marginalized from the church. This is a great way for us to be prepared for the celebration of the Coming of Christ at Christmas. Next weekend we will light up the Memory Tree at the Saturday Evening 4 pm Mass. Many thanks to those who oversee this opportunity for our community to pray for all those we honor and those who have gone before us. Our Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held next weekend. Tickets may be purchased online. Please respect the hard working committee and purchase your tickets in advance so that they can be prepared to welcome you. Last year we had record participation with more than 95% of attendees prepurchasing their tickets. Thank you. Our Advent-Christmas-Epiphany mailing should have been received by all of our parishioners. Included is the quad-fold; a letter; and your family’s 2019 Christmas Collection Envelope. Please be deliberate as you prepare your Christmas Gift List insuring that your parish is included among those special gifts that you will make. For end of the year charitable giving opportunities, please consult your financial advisors. Consider our parish for your end of year charitable gift. Wrap your Christmas Collection Gift in the envelope provided for you. As always, I thank you for all that you do in helping us to be church together. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Annual diocesan Respect Life Poster, Essay and Photo -Meme Contest underway Bishop, Trenton priests, return from Rome after meeting with Pope, Holy See offices Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., is returning from his week in Rome, where he, along with his brother bishops from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, took part in Region III’s Ad Limina visit. Occurring about every five years, the pilgrimage included discussion of the quinquennial report prepared by each bishop for his diocese, meetings with officials of the Holy See on an array of topics, time in prayer at some of the holy sites, and an extended meeting with Pope Francis on Thanksgiving Day. Accompanying Bishop O’Connell from the Diocese of Trenton were Msgr. Thomas Gervasio, vicar general, and Father Carlo Calisin, episcopal master of ceremonies. For more about the Ad Limina visit, go to TrentonMonitor.com and click on NEWS>DIOCESE.
Students across the Diocese of Trenton will have the opportunity to reflect on how their hope in Christ’s promise of salvation connects with everyday life – and the issues everyday life brings. Participation is open to children in kindergarten through eighth grades who are enrolled in Catholic schools, parish religious education programs, junior youth programs and home-schooled students. We accomplished much work with over 30 volunteers. Thank you Parishioners and Scouts for helping out at the Fall Clean up held on Saturday Nov. 23, 2019. Your willingness to give your time made a difference in the condition of the parish grounds. We lucked out. The weather was perfect for a November day!! All the ornamental grasses in the grotto were cut back. Leaves, pine cones, debris and branches were collected from rear of buildings and on the North side of the property, umbrellas from the courtyard were removed and Christmas decorations were moved from the garages and shed to the parish buildings. Much was accomplished indeed! Thank you to all who brought equipment – blowers, chainsaws, tools and tarps that helped make the clean-up run more smoothly.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: TOTAL ACCOUNTABILITY The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has defined stewardship as a “life of total accountability and responsibility, acknowledging God as Creator and responsibility, acknowledging God as Creator and owner of all.” As we travel our faith journey through the Church Year, following in the footsteps of Jesus as His disciples, let us reflect on how accountable and responsible we have been with the gifts God has given us. Were we the good stewards that we are called to be? Did we give back with increase a portion of what we have received from our abundantly generous God? Have we grown in our faith and shared our time, talent, and treasure with others? It is not too late. “Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10: 43-45)
