Question for Youth: God chose to be among us in the person of Jesus. How does having a God who knows what it means to be human affect the way you pray or think about God? Question for Adults: Whether single, married, or divorced, how does Paul’s advice ring true in your own life? Choose one of his suggestions and share how it touches your life.
Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God’s invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38). Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43). Mary’s role as mother of God places her in a unique position in God’s redemptive plan. Without naming Mary, Paul asserts that “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Paul’s further statement that “God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father!’” helps us realize that Mary is mother to all the brothers and sisters of Jesus. The precise title “Mother of God” goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek form Theotokos (God-bearer), it became the touchstone of the Church’s teaching about the Incarnation. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the holy Fathers were right in calling the holy virgin Theotokos. Centuries later, the fathers of the Second Vatican Council codified Mary’s role in the Church, and in one of the council documents: A Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, they refer to Mary as “Mother of God” 12 times. As this solemnity falls at the beginning of the calendar year, there are also indulgences that may be earned by the faithful. A plenary indulgence is earned for praying the Te Deum on the eve to give thanks to God for the previous year, or for praying the Veni Creator Spiritus on the day, asking the Spirit for guidance in the new year. The schedule for the Solemnity this year is: December 31, 4pm, Parish of Saint Mary, with musical prelude at 3:40pm January 1, 9am, Church of Saint Catharine

Thomas Becket, Bishop and Martyr, 1118-1170 Thomas Becket (sometimes called Thomas à Becket), the son of the sheriff of London, was educated in Surrey, London, and Paris. His parents died when he was twenty-one, and he went to work for a relative in London. About three years later, Thomas joined the household of Archbishop Theobold of Canterbury. Already trained in law, Thomas was sent by the archbishop to Rome, Bologna, and Auxerre to study canon law. Thomas was ordained a deacon in 1154 and nominated by Theobold as the arch-deacon of Canterbury. There he quickly became a favorite and close friend of Henry of Anjou, soon to become King Henry II of England. The king made Thomas the chancellor of England in 1155. O Lord, help us enter the New Year quietly, thoughtful of who we are to ourselves and to others, mindful that our steps make an impact, and our words carry power. May we walk gently and with purpose. Amen. Sister Mary Ann Barret, O.P.
The Martha Mary Guild invites all women of the parish and our cohort parishes to join us on Wednesday, January 10, for a very informative, important meeting with a special guest, Monmouth County Surrogate Judge, Maureen T. Raisch. To quote her: "My primary goal is to help you, especially when you are grieving the loss of a loved one." We don't like to think about that part of our lives, but it is a reality and it's important to know how to handle the practical aspects. The Surrogate's Court is a court of limited jurisdiction that handles matters dealing with Probate, Administration of Estates, Guardianship and Adoption, as well as overseeing assets of minors under its jurisdiction for Monmouth County residents. As a member of this Court, Ms. Raisch is well qualified to answer pertinent questions you may have. Come to the former chapel in the Spiritual Center at 11:30 a.m. for the rosary, followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch), with refreshments supplied by the Guild. The program will begin around 12:30 noon.

Paul’s letter to the Romans has been at the center of reflection, conversion, and controversy from the very beginning. Presented by Dr. Andrew Swafford and Jeff Cavins, Romans: The Gospel of Salvation provides an authentically Catholic way to understand this challenging epistle. Above all, it will help you enter into a more meaningful relationship with Christ. Many Catholics fear Romans as a ‘Protestant’ Epistle of Paul, but in this lavishly illustrated and attractive study, Swafford and Cavins present Catholics with a study that is both profound yet accessible—based on the best contemporary scholarship and faithful to the Church’s tradition. This series is 8 sessions , beginning January 16. Sessions are Tuesday evenings 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM and Wednesday mornings 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. To sign-up, click HERE.
