HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family.

Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered.

Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. Saint Mary's Windows: Reminders of God's Love and Presence - Lucille Castro The twelve stained-glass windows that surround our worship area show images of Mary throughout the centuries. Learning about the stories that the windows depict can help us appreciate Mary's connection to people as the loving Mother of God's Family, the Church. Mary reminds us that God is always with us. - The full description of all the stained-glass windows can be found on the Parish website under Information and Church History The Holy Family at Nazareth This window is a reminder that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus shared life together.

It is easy to imagine that this family never experienced life's ups and downs; however, this Family was very real. Like all families, they had household tasks, family responsibilities, community interactions, as well as physical and emotional challenges as part of their life. As we look at this picture we can remember that God is with us in our daily lives as we face these everyday experiences. We can also use this window as a reminder to pray for families, especially those who are experiencing difficulties.

Mass for Life will be celebrated at the Cathedral in Trenton at 9:30 am on January 22, 2019.

Immediately following Mass, the congregation will be invited to process to the Statehouse for the annual Rally for Life, organized by New Jersey Right to Life. The Rally for Life will begin at 11:00 am and end at approximately 1 pm.

Its purpose is to encourage all children to be aware of the needs of children living in mission diocese through the world and support them both spiritually and sacrificially. Under its banner “children helping children”, monies raised through schools are directed towards self-help programs involving the building of schools, the provision of health and nutrition programs and medications, school fees, and teaching and learning resources.

Students should make a sacrificial offering each week during the Advent & Christmas seasons. At the end of the holiday break, a check in the amount collected should then be made out to 'St Mary Parish' writing MCA in the memo line and brought to their FIRST class back in January. Alternatively donations can be made online at https://giving.parishsoft.com/ smcn selecting MCA/Missionary Childhood Association from the fund pull down menu.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

The familiarity of family can sometimes blind us to see the goodness in each other. This feast reminds us to open our eyes and be “astonished” at the goodness of each other rather than anxious about our own concerns. Families grow in strength when each person in the family—from parents to the smallest child and including anyone extended the hospitality of the family—is treated as one dedicated to God and, therefore, holy. This is challenging when sometimes all we can see is each other’s faults.

It takes a great deal of self-emptying to get beyond the normal, everyday annoyances that are part of family life and see others as both gift and consecrated to God as we are. Mary and Joseph were not free from family struggles; after all, they lost Jesus on a trip!

But they did not give up until they found him.

Neither does God give up on us!

Many thanks to all those who have helped us prepare our parish church for the Solemnity of Christmas. Inside and outside all has been done with loving care and in good taste.

Thanks to all of our Liturgical Ministers for the sacrifices that you have made and continue to make so that our parish worship might truly be a sacred action of the Christian Community. Some generously served more than one Mass so that we could be properly staffed at all of the Masses for the convenience of our parishioners and guest.

These days are wonderful opportunities for families to gather and to tell stories, for visiting, and for dining (that is not just eating

to nourish our bodies…but taking the opportunity to eat slowly and enjoy company and conversation together).

The liturgies during the Christmas Season (25 December through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord) are times of great grace and opportunities for reflection. I think of those who have gone before us and the sacrifices they have made for us.

I am truly grateful for all of the sacrifices we are making in order to provide for the needs of our community. A special thanks to all those who have made their 2018 Christmas Gift to our parish this year. This collection is a major source of income for our community each and every year, but more so this year as we continue the important work of ministry. I am grateful to you for your kind and generous sharing. If you have not, please do so this coming week.

We will provide you with a report of this collection at the conclusion of the Christmas Season.

I invite you to pray in a special way for those who are sick and homebound during this Christmas Season. They hold a special place in our community and our common prayer.

Masses have been scheduled for New Years Eve and New Years Day. Please consult the bulletin and plan to participate as we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Octave day of Christmas.

May God continue to bless all of our families.

Let us pray in a special way for all expectant families. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Buona Domenica.

“Light Up a Memory” Thank You As our beautiful tree sparkles during the rest of the Christmas season, it will remind all of us about the many loved ones (both living and deceased) represented by the lights and of the kindness and generosity of so many people.

The Martha Mary Guild Will Feature “CASA” in January On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in Madonna Hall, a representative of CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates ,will explain more about the wonderful work they do for children, who could very easily be “lost in the system” without CASA. The presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m., after Guild members and welcomed guests have their lunch (BYOL- Bring Your Own Lunch) and dessert - provided by the Guild.

The rosary will be prayed in the Chapel of the Spiritual Center at 11:30 a.m.

Note to members: Kindly bring warm hats, scarves and/or gloves which will be distributed to CASA. Below are pictures portraying the Guild members’ generosity in December – the baby gifts for Birthright and Christmas gifts for our “Adopt-a-Family”, with some Board members who shopped and wrapped. The Saint Mary Parish Advent Pancake Breakfast was held on Sunday, December 16, 2018.

No Little event… It surely was a wonderful fun filled community building event for all ages!!

515 tickets were sold for the event .

THANK YOU to Catherine Love and Edwin Sevillano for overseeing this year’s Advent Pancake Breakfast and coordinating all the details and volunteer participation. A special shout out to the men running the kitchen. We had several new faces work the griddles. We wish we could list every volunteer (90+) by name because without each and every one of you this event is not possible!!

Thank you to the community business owners who contributed products and/or discounts to the event: Ronstan Paper Company, Perkins, Eli’s Hot Bagels, Dunkin Donuts, Mueller’s Bakery, Holiday Meats and Maureen and Michael Staub for providing us with the inflatables, costumes and crumb cake.

Your generosity of product and discounts was greatly appreciated and helps us to provide breakfast at a reduced price!!
