Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the First Sunday in the Season of Advent. This Sunday also marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. Here’s one way of living the paschal mystery (the dying and rising mystery of Christ into which we are plunged at baptism): we let the end (Christ’s coming in glory at the end of time) determine the way we live in the present (waiting and watching for God’s many comings now). There is a seeming contradiction here (God is already present but still coming) that is allayed when we remember that God is already present in our lives because we are graced members of the body of Christ, “not lacking in any spiritual gift” (second reading) and enjoying God’s blessings now. At the same time, we watch and wait for Christ’s return, when we will enjoy the greater blessings yet to come. Paschal mystery living is living the tension of this already and not yet of Christ’s presence. Here the end not only justifies the means; it is the means: being mindful of Christ’s coming in judgment is how we live.

We had a great response to the Thanksgiving Food Drive 2017. Thanks to all those who donated, those who sorted and prepared the baskets and those who delivered. Thanks to those who participated in the Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service hosted by our parish community. We also had awesome participation in the Fall Clean Up. More than 50 persons participated in this important work and community building opportunity. Many thanks to all those who helped prepare the liturgy last weekend for the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King, as well as the reception in honor of Deacon Fred. As we begin a new liturgical year, there are lots of preparations happening throughout the month as we make our way toward Christmas.

The Advent candles are an outward visible sign of the call to focus on how we are living our lives and how the choices we are making advance us along the path toward heaven. The scripture

passages and prayers offered during the sacred liturgy are some of the most beautiful that we have in our Roman Catholic tradition. Take notice of them and pray along as they are offered.

We are also busy with the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation for our parish community this Sunday, 3 December 2017 at 3:00pm in the Church. During this service 80 or so of our young people will approach this sacrament for the first time. What an awesome experience it is for them to be part of our community as we witness to them God’s love and mercy. Come to this sacrament as part of your preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas. The Advent Pancake Breakfast will be held next Sunday, 10 December 2017. If you have not purchased your tickets, please do so this coming week. This is a wonderful opportunity to help build community as we familiarize ourselves with other parishioner families. Please purchase your tickets in advance online or at the parish office. Please do not disrespect the volunteers and those responsible for ordering food/supplies by just showing up.

We can handle some walk ins but not a lot. We need to have an accurate count to properly provide for all those wishing to participate. The Light Up A Memory Team have been busy in preparation for the lighting of the Evergreen Tree on our property, as a visible reminder of our need to pray for those who have gone before us, and as a reminder to all of us to give thanks for those on whose shoulders we stand. We customarily light the tree on the Saturday of the 3rd weekend of Advent or Gaudete Weekend. Come and be a part of this awesome celebration.

His Excellency, The Most Reverend David O’Connell will celebrate Mass and offer the homily next Sunday, 10 December at the 10:00am Mass. Hopefully, his schedule will permit a visit to the Pancake Breakfast. Come out and welcome His Excellency to our Parish Community. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Thanksgivings Basket Thank you!!

Because of your stewardship and support, 145 baskets + onions + potatoes + turkeys were provided to charities throughout Monmouth County for Thanksgiving. This was a combination of canned goods and money for turkeys donated by parishioners, fresh vegetables donated by parishioner Joe Pellicone and supplement from Social Concerns funds to ensure we met our commitments to the charities.

Thank you to Saint Mary Parish, our pastor Fr. Jeff, and the Martha Mary Guild for making NCYC 2017 possible for three SMCN teens: Patrick Dickinson, Bridget Farrow and Valeska Yaninas. THX also to the Diocese of Trenton (Dan and Gerry) for organizing transportation, t-shirts & other details.

The teens had an amazing experience and encountered God in a really powerful way!!

The three day National Catholic Youth Conference NCYC 2017 can be described as a whirlwind for all HS teens and adults in attendance, approximately 25,000 from around our country including Alaska and Hawaii. There was so much to see and experience! How do you occupy the time of 25,000 people? Keep them really really busy!!

The days and nights were filled with prayer, worship (Mass and adoration opportunities everyday), service with CRS and other groups, community and team building experiences, great music, keynote & inspiring speakers, personal witness stories, exhibits, lots of gear trading between teens, breakout sessions and work shops for youth and adults, Catholic empowerment & so much more!

No words to express the powerful experience and witness of 25,000 people on their knees in Adoration to our Lord Jesus Christ in Lucas Oil Stadium while Matt Maher sings "Lord I Need You," the monks from St. Meinrad chant night prayers (Compline) and others in attendance received the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the 200 sections of the Stadium. “Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary and is now in its 10th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in St. Mary’s Gathering Space.

There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 16, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by Saint Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony.

The deadline to reserve a light is Nov. 27, so call the parish 732-780 -2666, Molly Aiello 732-598-6808 or Freda O’Doherty 732-5779541.

Christmas Celebration for the Martha Mary Guild Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017 will be a very special meeting for the Martha Mary Guild, with wonderful entertainment and holiday treats. The Matinee Idols, who are a talented group of Barber Shop singers, will delight us with their songs and sing-alongs: which are always fun – so bring your singing voices!

A very important part of this annual event is the collection of baby gifts for Birth Right remembering the message of sharing and “good will toward men” at Christmas. Members generously contribute baby clothes, diapers, blankets, etc. for newborns.

There will be eggnog and delicious Christmas goodies to top off your BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). Join us in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 11:30 a.m. for the rosary and then we will proceed into Madonna Hall for our lunch and festivities – including some surprises!! Everyone is welcome!
