Christmas Carols The oldest of Christmas Carols, can be traced back to early Christianity, when hymns that related specifically to Christmas were first recorded as being sung. One of these, “Of the Father’s Love Begotten”, dates back to the 4th century, as is sometimes thought of as the world’s oldest Christmas Carol.

The Advent Hymn, “O Come O Come Emmanuel” has text that dates to the 5th century, and there is a noticeable gap in carols for many centuries, mostly due to the fact that music was mainly an aural tradition until notation systems developed in Greece around the 4th century, but still struggled to carry on through history. The development of Gregorian chant in the 9th century helped some music remain through the ages.

There was a resurgence of carols in the style of sacred motets during the Renaissance, and at the same time the singing of carols gained popularity in Russia, Poland, Hungary, and other Eastern European nations. In Eastern Europe, carols were common in some countries like Spain and Portugal around the same time, but became even more commonplace in the rest of Europe in the 18th century, and, after becoming popular in England, found their way to the colonies we now call home. Their popularity has remained ever since, and composers are writing new carols to this day.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This gospel relates the other three of Joseph’s dreams, recorded in Matthew’s gospel; the first we met on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. These dreams continue the revelation-response motif begun on Christmas Day. This is the interface of our own modern families and the Holy Family: as they did, we too all face challenges in responding to God faithfully and obediently.

The holiness of a family is not dependent upon perfection or an easy road. As Mary and Joseph showed us, holiness is dependent upon faithfulness and obedience to God’s messages. Whether we are a traditional family or a single-parent family, whether we have biological or adopted or foster children or no children, whether we live in an expensive home or a subsidized rental unit makes no difference for living as a holy family. What does make a difference is hearing God’s messages and doing God’s will. Revelation-response made the Holy Family holy; it makes our families holy, too.

This is paschal mystery living: responding to both hardships (dying) and God’s wonderful gifts of graces (rising) in fidelity and obedience. Trust in God’s ways.

Many thanks to all those who sent greetings, gifts, culinary delights, and prayerful wishes to the Parish House for the Christmas Season. Your warmth and generosity are overwhelming. You truly make our Parish a

vibrant community where faith is nurtured.

This coming week is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God which is the Octave (8th) Day of Christmas. This Solemnity is a wonderful opportunity for us to gather in prayer as we begin a new civic calendar year. Please consult the bulletin for special Mass times and other particulars. We will begin celebrating 9 am DAILY MASS in CHRIST CHAPEL located near Madonna Hall on JANUARY 2nd continuing until the TUESDAY prior to ASH WEDNESDAY unless otherwise announced in our parish bulletin. Please note this change as we strive to be good and faithful stewards of our resources.

Many thanks to all those who have served to make our parish community ready for these Advent-Christmas-Epiphany Liturgies. Our staff is here to guide and support the many parishioners in caring for our parish community and making things happen. Let us be mindful of the many gifts we have been given and the call for us to be a gift to one another especially in sharing our faith. Do not forget to keep the tree and decorations up for a while. The Season of Christmas (Liturgically) continues until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. If you have not already made your Christmas Gift to our parish on Christmas Day, please do so this week so that we can prepare a report for you to review.

The Saint Mary Parish Advent Pancake Breakfast was held on Sunday, December 15, 2019.

No Little event… It surely was a wonderful fun filled community building event for all ages!!

This year we had 431 tickets sold in advance for the event with 55 more sold at the door.

THANK YOU to Diana and Joe Martinez, Mary Schneider, Providence Zumbo, Jessica Ward, Jack and Rorie Coppola, and Edwin Sevillano for this year’s Advent Pancake Breakfast, shopping, decorating, coordinating the details, and volunteer participation. A special shout out to the men running the kitchen headed by Neil Slattery. We had several new faces working the griddles. We wish we could list every volunteer (60+) by name because without each and every one of you this event is not possible!!

Thank you to the community business owners who contributed products and/or discounts to the event: Ronstan Paper Company, Colts Neck Eatery, Eli’s Hot Bagels, Dunkin Donuts, Mueller’s Bakery, Holiday Meats, and Maureen and Michael Staub for providing us with the inflatables, costumes, and crumb cake.

WWP Christmas party, our gift collection and our food donation to the Center in Asbury Park.

The participants of WWP bible study celebrated Christmas on December 12th. In gratitude for their blessings, the opportunity to share faith with each other and the WWP woman’s bible study program, they give back to the community. The women participated in a gift drive through Roger Zurro and social concerns ministry. Also, food and desserts from the gathering were boxed up and donated to the Center in Asbury Park.
