The Two Comings of Christ Advent is a time of preparation. Most people think of it as a time to prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas; and while this is true, it is also a time to prepare for his coming at the end of time. Many of the Advent readings and hymns we sing during Advent and Christmastime allude to the two comings of Christ.

One of the hymns we sing during Advent, The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns. In the same hymn, the author speaks of the birth of Christ, but also of the return: Not, as of old, a little child To suffer and to die, But crowned with glory like the sun That lights the morning sky.

It is important during this time of preparation to not only prepare our hearts for the coming of the infant, the Son of Mary and Savior of the World, but also the Redeemer, Ruler of all, King of Kings for all eternity.

In it, we find God's unconditional forgiveness, and as a result we are called to forgive others.

In this sacrament, the outward sign is the absolution, or forgiveness of sins, that the priest grants to the penitent (the person confessing his or her sins); the inward grace is the reconciliation of the penitent to God. To receive the sacrament worthily, three things are required of the penitent: To be contrite—or, in other words, sorry for his or her sins. To confess those sins fully, in kind and in number. To be willing to do penance and make amends for his or her sins.

Since Advent is a time for preparation, Penance and Reconciliation helps make us ready in mind, heart and soul for the coming of Christ, which we will soon celebrate in the Mass of Christmas.

Mary, Patroness of the United States This window is a vivid reminder that as a nation we need to remember that Mary is with us. Our country's flag and the image of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC are both clear reminders of Mary's importance to our country. In 1792, John Carroll, the bishop of Baltimore and America's first Roman Catholic bishop, consecrated the newly-created United States to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception. In 1847, Pope Pius IX formalized Carroll's acclamation, proclaiming the Immaculate Conception as the "patroness of the United States." As we look at this window, let us pray for our country that as a nation we may live with awareness that we are all the children of God's family.

Let us work to help make that awareness a reality in our country's laws and rules. - Lucille Castro

The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is often misunderstood to be when Jesus was conceived, but it is in fact when Mary was conceived in the natural way by her parents Joachim and Anne.

This celebration is a reminder of God’s grace in our broken world — how true goodness and purity can exist even in the midst of ugliness and sin. We are reminded that we always have a choice to say “yes” to God as Mary did and to welcome God’s saving action — even when it seems impossible. Confirmation Prep Grades 7 & 8 Next few sessions The infancy narratives are arguably the most beautiful and intriguing passages in the Gospels. Within these narratives we encounter the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in miniature.

Journey with us as Dr. Jim Bridges guides us through an exploration of the compositions casting light on their theological purpose. From the child in the manger to the Magi’s search for the infant Jesus, the evangelists create two unique narratives that reveal the importance of Jesus of Nazareth. Come experience the narratives that captured our imagination for nearly 2000 years.

2nd Grade Students and Families Several families were unable to attend the meeting on November 6. Therefore, an extra First Penance review & practice for any children needing or desiring it, has been scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 4:40 pm.

The Tuesday 2nd grade classes will participate as part of class. Those Summer Intensive students needing review are welcome.

It will only last about 15 minutes.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent. Vigilance for the many comings of Christ in our daily lives involves a dying to self. This means that our focus is not on our own wants and needs but on the Christ who chooses to be intimately present to us. Our prayer for strength might be that Jesus help us see his presence in the people around us. This is pretty easy (with a practical reminder to ourselves) when the other person is pleasant or cooperative or helpful. The dying happens when the other is cranky or not to our liking or threatening.

How can we see Christ in the other when the other doesn’t conform to our image of Christ?

This is the question “anxieties of daily life” raises. The dying comes in growing in our image of who Christ is! The dying comes in forming the habit of seeing Christ in all others because Christ came to redeem all. The rising comes in constant vigilance, for Christ comes in many ways.

I hope that your Thanksgiving observance was truly a family time to gather and give thanks for the many blessings we receive. Wow… what a great response for our Thanksgiving food drive…the bags of food and the turkeys surely made a difference in the lives of some needy families. Thanks so much for your generous sharing. This past week was filled with all kinds of activity in the parish office.

Then Pope John Paul II proclaimed OLG the patroness of America (North, Central & South). This is part of my responsibilities as Diocesan Coordinator of Pilgrimages. We have 40 pilgrims including His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop and 8 priests including Msgr.

“Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 11th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in The Parish of Saint Mary Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation.

There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 15, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6.

The deadline to reserve a light is Monday, Dec. 3.

Everyone is welcome to participate in this wonderful tribute to our loved ones.

Hannah de Groot, a senior at Penn State University and active parishioner is very involved in Penn State's THON-- a 46-hour dance marathon, held in February, benefitting childhood cancer. For more information see Four Diamonds https://www.fourdiamonds.org To help in raising money this year she is conducting a clothing drive. The clothes will be processed by A&E Clothing Corporation which specializes in processing used clothing and goods based on the weight of the contribution.

There will be a collection box in the Gathering Space to receive donations from Nov. 19 - Dec. 14.

Monmouth Civic Chorus at Martha Mary - December 12 Pictured above are some of the members of the Monmouth Civic Chorus’ Caroling Corps, who will be entertaining us with delightful Christmas music at the December 12th meeting of the Martha Mary Guild. They will surely get us into the holiday spirit, with 45 minutes of pure joy!

Another special feature of the December meeting is a wonderful tradition of bringing baby gifts for Birthright. The members are always so generous and the “new mommies” sure appreciate it.

There will also be special treats to consume and enjoy after we participate in BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). All ladies of the parish are cordially invited to join us at 11:30 a.m. for the rosary in the Spiritual Center Chapel, followed by lunch in Madonna Hall.

The “songfest” will begin right after lunch.
