The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the purity of the Virgin Mary, that she was conceived in the womb of her mother Anne without the stain of original sin, and therefore pre-destined to carry the Son of God in her own womb. Although the belief that Mary was without sin was held since the middle ages (both by theological scholars and laity), it was not until the year 1854, when Pope Pius IX declared in his papal bull, Ineffabilis Deus, that Mary was indeed conceived without original sin, speaking with papal infallibility and thus creating a dogma of the Catholic Church. “We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.” Celebrated on December 8th, this day is the patronal feast of the United States and a Holy Day of Obligation. Occurring during Advent, the solemnity breaks from the preparatory mood of the season. The Gloria, normally omitted on Sundays of Advent, is sung. Other music selected for the Mass may be Marian in content, specifically the Annunciation (which is recalled in the Gospel).

Parking head-in on the grass

It is so wonderful that we are blessed with many parishioner families & visitors to our parish during Christmas. Please be reminded that all staff, ministry volunteers & choir members should park head-in on the grass around the parish campus. Visitors are invited to do the same for additional parking especially during Christmas Eve and Christmas day Masses. Please see page 8 for Mass times. Nicholas, Bishop, Fourth Century A few things are known for certain about Nicholas: he was born of wealthy parents; named bishop of Myra, a city on the Mediterranean coast of present-day Turkey; became known for his holiness, zeal, charity, and miracles; and was imprisoned for his faith during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian. To those few facts are added the colorful legends which have made him a favorite of young and old for centuries. Among the stories most often told about Nicholas is the account of the three sisters whose family had lost its wealth. To keep the girls from having to turn to prostitution, Nicholas, on three separate occasions, tossed a bag of gold through a window. This money became a dowry for each of the girls, and saved the family from ruin. Miracles have also been attributed to Nicholas. He is said to have saved —Read More HERE.

The sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is the most powerful way by which we can prepare to engage wholeheartedly in the extraordinary event we know as Christmas.

‘How Great is our Sound’ On Tuesday, November 28th in support of the National Eucharistic Revival, the Cohort Parishes of St. Mary, Colts Neck and St. Catharine, Holmdel hosted a special event entitled “How Great is Our God”. Over 100 participants were introduced to a music and video presentation highlighting the power and majesty of God along with His immense love for us. God’s love for us is so great, that He sent his only son, Jesus, to give His life for us and to leave us the greatest gift, Himself, present in the Holy Eucharist. Those who attended were impacted with a profound sense of amazement, humility and gratitude. It was truly a special event! Thank you to 8th Grader’s Preparing for Confirmation! all who supported this endeavor. As the Advent and Christmas season are upon us, families and friends have more opportunity to spend quality time together. Now is a great time, if you haven't already, to begin working on your six conversations with your sponsor. You can find the Faith to Faith magazine with the materials handed out at orientation. Magazine and confirmation paperwork are due by April 28. Sponsor certificates are currently being accepted by the parish office. See our website for more Information HERE. *Sponsors should go to the parish in which they are registered and request a Certificate of eligibility to be a sponsor.
