October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

For centuries Catholics have turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession in times of need by praying the Rosary. This great prayer, whose origins date before the 12th century, uses a meditative repetition of prayers that invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she leads us to consider the mysteries in the life of her Divine Son, Jesus. History has shown this to be a powerful, effective and calming prayer that has truly changed hearts and lives over the centuries of its use.

Pope Saint Gregory the Great

served as Pope from 590-604, and his memorial is celebrated on September 3. He is the patron saint of musicians, especially singers, students and teachers. Although his tenure was short, he is noted for multiple accomplishments: Emphasized missionary work in Great Britain Frequently gave alms to the poor, and suggested that each church have a deacon who would be ordained for the purpose of service to the poor and needy  Fed the hungry during a Roman famine in the mid-590s, using the farming assets of the Church of Rome.  Heavily involved in the liturgy of the Church, he began to establish the collecting of chants used throughout the various regions and constructed the standard for which specific chants would be used for specific services. Although the specific way of notating this music would come centuries later, the term Gregorian Chant is attributed to him and remains the official musical form of the Catholic Church to this day.  

Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said of the Rosary that it is “the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next.

The power of the Rosary is beyond description.”

As Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, I invite all Catholics in the Diocese of Trenton to consider making this powerful devotion part of your daily life of prayer. Please join with me in praying Our Lady’s Rosary every day between now and October 7, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, for the many intentions and needs of our nation today, especially for a true respect for life in all its stages from conception to natural death; for the strengthening of marriage and family life; for an end to the COVID 19 pandemic and for all those impacted by it; for a lasting resolution to the racial tensions and injustices that have too long afflicted our country; for an end to the violence and death in our cities, especially among the young; for the victims of sexual abuse and human trafficking; for the poor, the unemployed and those who face economic hardship and for so many of the other intentions and needs that we face in our country and world.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship

Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4. Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

For all parishioners: Congregating before and after Mass is prohibited, as per the bishop. There will be no children’s liturgy of the word dismissal. Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and

weekday). We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. At weekday Masses, no one is to arrive prior to 8:30 AM. All Masses will be in the Chapel in the Parish Hall. Exposition remains suspended for now. Private adoration of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle is welcomed and encouraged at any time.

Dear Parents of our Confirmation candidates: We recognize that these are difficult times, with uncertainty and reasonable anxieties, especially with regards to our children. Like many school districts nationwide, we make plans and contingency plans. We do our best to be safe while seeking to come as close to normal practices as possible.

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by our Bishop on Friday, October 23, at 4 pm. Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed in our Church at one time, attendance will be limited to the candidate, his/her sponsor, and you, the parents. There will be assigned seating, so that safe distancing can be assured. All present will need to wear a face mask. The diocesan guidelines also dictate that there will not be actual physical contact in the conferral of the sacrament. The sponsor will stand behind the candidate without putting their hand on the shoulder of the candidate. The Bishop will anoint the candidate’s forehead with chrism using a single use swab. The Bishop will neither tap the cheek nor shake the hand of the candidate.

The Confirmation ceremony is NOT a Mass, so there will be no distribution of the Eucharist. We will have a practice on Saturday, October 17, immediately following the 4 pm Mass. If possible, the sponsor should be present for the practice. However, a parent can stand in for the sponsor.

In addition, we will have a professional photographer present. As we have done in past years, the candidates will gather in Madonna Hall beginning at 3 pm, while the parents and sponsors find their assigned seating in the Church. We intend to have a group photo taken in Madonna Hall with the candidates very briefly removing their masks for the photo. Information regarding ordering photos will be shared as soon as we have it.

In addition, we will be having a Confirmation Retreat on Sunday, September 13. It will begin with attendance at the 12 noon Mass and will end by 4 pm. It will be led by Colleen Rayner, who facilitated last year’s retreat, which was overwhelmingly praised by those who attended. The candidate should be accompanied by their sponsor if at all possible. If not, then one parent must attend.

Finally, all the necessary paperwork needs to be submitted as soon as possible. Before you submit anything to us, be sure to make and keep a copy for yourself. You can mail the paperwork to us, or drop it in the mailbox at the curb outside the Parish Center. If the office is open, you can bring it inside and give it to a member of the staff. Orientations for Fall 2020-2021

First Communion has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 18th and Sunday, October 25th at the 10 am and 12 pm noon Masses.

We understand that these are uncertain times but we will be moving forward as best we can and will remain flexible with this upcoming school year.

Once the church office is open again, after Labor Day, please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so. You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass.

The rehearsals will be as follows: Wed, Oct 14 at 5pm for the 10/18 10am ceremony Wed, Oct 14 at 6pm for the 10/18 12pm ceremony Wed, Oct 21 at 5pm for the 10/25 10am ceremony Wed, Oct 21 at 6pm for the 10/25 12pm ceremony Please arrive promptly at rehearsal. Your child should attend with one parent only. We will be reviewing how to receive the Eucharist and the children will practice with the unconsecrated host.

First and second graders will be meeting in the church every Tuesday at the early session from 4:30-5:40pm or the late session from 5:50pm-7pm. The first class will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. All protocols of social distancing will be followed, temperatures will be taken upon arrival and masks will be worn.

Our third through sixth graders will be participating in the online program through MY FAITH DELIVERED. If you have not yet received your login information, please contact the parish office.

We will have two orientation options for all parents and children in the religious education program. Come to Mass on one of the following days and there will be an orientation directly following the service. We will be following all protocols set in place at our parish. Please let us know which Mass you will attend: Saturday, September 12th - 5 pm Mass or Saturday, September 19th - 5 pm Mass.

We are asking all parents to consider volunteering this year as we will need more help than usual. As well as teachers for 1st and 2nd grade, we are in need of hall monitors that can also take temperatures upon arrival. This is also a good chance for "community service" hours that are needed for our 7th and 8th graders. If you are interested, please contact the parish office.

Quo vadis‌ My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Authentic discipleship does not require us to hunt for suffering.

Being faithful to Jesus will bring enough as it is. For many of us the bigger challenge of discipleship is to keep in focus that our self-offering always brings new life.

Like Jesus, embracing discipleship means that we, too, are destined for glory. All who wish to be faithful to this call to discipleship must be prepared to suffer—and also prepared to receive new life.

Some of our college aged parishioners are returning to school for another semester.

It will be very different.

However, it is important to carry on with vigilance and care. High Schools and Elementary Schools are offering various options in order to resume studies. They need our support and guidance. The Future Generation Childcare Center continues to serve the needs of those who have smaller children. This has been especially helpful for those families who

are working from home. Let us continue to support all who strive to learn and to grow in knowledge and respect for self and others.

This weekend some of my family members are coming for a picnic. I think this is the 58th year we have been gathering together in the summertime.

Some have opted out due to COVID-19, others are coming for the first time in a few years. It is always good to keep up with family no matter where they might be living.

Next week we will be convening our Pastoral Council. This group of bona fide parishioners have been most helpful to me these past years. I continue to welcome their sage counsel reviewing protocols for the coming months as we continue to re-open and re-convene parish ministries and activities. Have a great week.

Fall 2020 The New Day - Bereavement Support Group held by - Ministry of Consolation Invites You…to participate in a nine week program for those who are grieving the death of loved ones and want to work through the tasks of grief in a structured way using the New Day Journal, A Journey from Grief to Healing. The sessions include readings, reflection, sharing and journaling.

Outdoor Prayer Service to Combat Racism St. Catharine Church, 108 Middletown Road, Holmdel

The issue of racism was once again brought to the fore this summer. Racism continues to be an issue that we must confront as a nation so that the dignity of all people is recognized.

Join us to pray for an end to racism in our community and country on Wednesday evening, September 9 at 7:30 pm, on the grounds outside the Church of St. Catharine in Holmdel.

Bring a phone or a flashlight so that we can light up the property of St. Catharine with our prayers.
