Queenship of Mary Every August 15, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a day which commemorates the assumption of Mary into Heaven, body and soul, to be with her son, Jesus. This is an important Catholic belief and dogma of the Church.

One week later, on the octave of the Assumption, August 22, a lesser known feast of Mary occurs; the Feast of the Queenship of Mary.

There is both a biblical and theological background to this title for the Blessed Virgin Mother. Biblically speaking, in the Gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel announces that Jesus will be “Son of the Most High”, and that the Lord will give him the throne of David, and that his reign will be without end. In the Hebrew tradition, if a man became King, his mother would automatically be granted the title of Queen. The Book of Revelation also speaks of “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head”. The Catholic Church views Mary as this woman.

From a theological standpoint, Pope Pius XII proclaimed “Jesus is King throughout all eternity by nature and by right of conquest: through Him, with Him, and subordinate to Him, Mary is Queen by grace, by divine relationship, by right of conquest, and by singular choice [of the Father]”. Similar to the account of the Annunciation, Mary is Queen by her son being King, and also through the will of God the Father.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship

Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

For all parishioners: Congregating before and after Mass is prohibited, as per the bishop. There will be no children’s liturgy of the word dismissal. Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday).

We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. At weekday Masses, no one is to arrive prior to 8:30 AM. All Masses will be in the Chapel in the Parish Hall. Exposition remains suspended for now. Private adoration of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle is welcomed and encouraged at any time.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. The good news of the Church is that Christ trusts us to proclaim throughout the ages that his identity has been revealed by God. Jesus didn’t only choose great thinkers or saintly people to steer his Church on a right course and make his name known. He chose ordinary human beings who simply open themselves to the capacity to be great believers because they are first great hearers of the revelation. “Revelation” doesn’t mean that we sit around alone in silence waiting for God to speak to us. It means that we open our eyes to see and our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus’ presence and power in the daily happenings around us. The infant who utters the first word and delights parents, one who has Alzheimer’s who has a rare moment of recognition, the unexpected good deed that comes our way can all be revelations of Jesus’ identity and saving power. We only need to hear and have faith.

We have completed the second module of our Summer RE Program. I am grateful to all who assisted in this opportunity to share faith with our young people. I know that our team is busy preparing for the upcoming intergenerational opportunities for parents and their children. We will be celebrating First Holy Communions and Confirmation during the month of October. The Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will be

celebrated 1 November the Solemnity of All Saints. We have been scheduling the Sacrament of Baptism for families with infants. Currently we are scheduled through the Solemnity of Christ the King and are adding additional times to accommodate the requests. ALL GOOD! Please consult the attached weekly bulletin regarding Walking With Purpose for Women and Bible Study for Women and Men. These are ways in which adults can grow in faith and meet other parishioners. Some of our parishioners have benefited from the FORMED subscription that is available online. Make time for your continued spiritual growth.

I am grateful to Roger Zurro who is our point person for Charitable Appeals. Recently, as part of Faith in Our Future, our parish has begun to direct some of our resources to Saint Catharine Parish, Holmdel. The Saint Vincent DePaul Society has operated a Food Pantry there for many years. This is a practical way we can support each other by directing our food collection to them for distribution. Thank you to all of our parishioners for your generous sharing of food items regularly. The food collection bin is located in the Narthex/Entrance to the Church Building.

Dear Parents of our Confirmation candidates: We recognize that these are difficult times, with uncertainty and reasonable anxieties, especially with regards to our children. Like many school districts nationwide, we make plans and contingency plans. We do our best to be safe while seeking to come as close to normal practices as possible.

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by our Bishop on Friday, October 23, at 4 pm. Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed in our Church at one time, attendance will be limited to the candidate, his/her sponsor, and you, the parents. There will be assigned seating, so that safe distancing can be assured. All present will need to wear a face mask. The diocesan guidelines also dictate that there will not be actual physical contact in the conferral of the sacrament. The sponsor will stand behind the candidate without putting their hand on the shoulder of the candidate. The Bishop will anoint the candidate’s forehead with chrism using a single use swab. The Bishop will neither tap the cheek nor shake the hand of the candidate.

The Confirmation ceremony is NOT a Mass, so there will be no distribution of the Eucharist. We will have a practice on Saturday, October 17, immediately following the 4 pm Mass. If possible, the sponsor should be present for the practice. However, a parent can stand in for the sponsor.

In addition, we will have a professional photographer present. As we have done in past years, the candidates will gather in Madonna Hall beginning at 3 pm, while the parents and sponsors find their assigned seating in the Church. We intend to have a group photo taken in Madonna Hall with the candidates very briefly removing their masks for the photo. Information regarding ordering photos will be shared as soon as we have it.

In addition, we will be having a Confirmation Retreat on Sunday, September 13. It will begin with attendance at the 12 noon Mass and will end by 4 pm. It will be led by Colleen Rayner, who facilitated last year’s retreat, which was overwhelmingly praised by those who attended. The candidate should be accompanied by their sponsor if at all possible. If not, then one parent must attend.

Finally, all the necessary paperwork needs to be submitted as soon as possible. Before you submit anything to us, be sure to make and keep a copy for yourself. You can mail the paperwork to us, or drop it in the mailbox outside the Parish Center. If the office is open, you can bring it inside and give it to a member of the staff. Dear First Communion Families, First Communion has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 18th and Sunday, October 25th at the 10 am and 12 pm noon Masses. We will be keeping the same day and time slot that you had originally been given through the lottery system last year.

(If you were the first Sunday last time, you will be the first Sunday this time) If this is a hardship for any reason or you don't remember what you were originally signed up for, please contact us and we will do our best to work with you.

We will be following the same protocols that have been in place here at the Parish of Saint Mary. Social distancing will be observed and masks will be worn. We will have the photographer take candid shots of your child receiving the Eucharist and we will also be taking the group picture with Father. If you wish to have a private session before the Mass with the photographer, please contact him for details. Dave Mellone 732-859-3352 Once the church office is open again, after Labor Day, please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so. You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass.

Your child should attend with one parent only. We will be reviewing how to receive the Eucharist and the children will practice with the unconsecrated host.

Outdoor Prayer Service to Combat Racism St. Catharine Church, Holmdel The issue of racism was once again brought to the fore this summer. Racism continues to be an issue that we must confront as a nation so that the dignity of all people is recognized.

Join us to pray for an end to racism in our community and country on Wednesday evening, September 9 at 7:30 pm, on the grounds outside the Church of St. Catharine in Holmdel.

Bring a phone or a flashlight so that we can light up the property of St. Catharine with our prayers.
