Music during the time of COVID-19 Some may wonder how the Church has responded to the pandemic currently facing our country and our world, especially in regards to music. The office of each local bishop, with input from health officials, sets guidelines and directives for the Diocese. The directives from the office of the Bishop of Trenton state: A cantor may sing from the choir loft, or behind a clear screen when in front of the assembly. Congregational singing is discouraged to prevent any possible spread of COVID 19. Choirs are not to be used.

To be compliant in that regard, we are using the simplest sung version of the Ordinary, which does give the congregation a chance to sing these parts they know well, without lengthy refrains to mitigate transmission. We are also utilizing the preferred option for music during the entrance and communion from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the document which guides the practices of Roman Catholic Liturgy. Regarding the entrance, for example: In the Dioceses of the United States of America, there are four options for the Entrance Chant: (1) the antiphon from the Missal or the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum, as set to music there or in another setting; (2) the antiphon and Psalm of the Graduale Simplex for the liturgical time; (3) a chant from another collection of Psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including Psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms; (4) another liturgical chant that is suited to the sacred action, the day, or the time of year, similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop.

For Sunday Masses we employ the first option, and for weekdays a combination of the four, as best suits the liturgy of the given day. By doing so, we fulfill both the prescriptions of the Universal Church of Rome and the directives of the local Bishop.

Music directors are eagerly awaiting the results of an in-depth study from the University of Colorado which had conducted experiments to analyze aerosol dispersal from singers of all voice types, as well as all wind, string, and percussion instruments, to determine guidelines for a safe return to live music. As these results become available and further guidelines from local bishops are released, we can begin to plan for the future. With science to guide us and faith to lead us, we pray for a time when we can return to a semblance of what we know and love.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship

Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see below Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

Thank you for putting up with all of this so that we can re-convene our liturgical prayer and sacramental life in a socially responsible way.

For all parishioners: Congregating before and after Mass is prohibited, as per the bishop. There will be no children’s liturgy of the word dismissal. Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and

weekday). We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. At weekday Masses, no one is to arrive prior to 8:30 AM. All Masses will be in the Chapel in the Parish Hall. Exposition remains suspended for now. Private adoration of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle is welcomed and encouraged at any time.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jesus’ “heart was moved with pity” for the crowd and his response to the crowd’s needs was an inbreaking of God’s kingdom, embodied by the very person and presence of Jesus whom the crowd sought. If we are the presence of the risen Christ today, then we too are an inbreaking of God’s kingdom when we reach out in compassion to satisfy the needs of others. One challenge, then, of our everyday living of the paschal mystery is to see in the self -sacrificing dying we embrace for the sake of others an in-breaking of God’s presence and kingdom. In other words, our own compassion is more than simply satisfying another’s need (as important even as that is in itself); like Jesus, our compassion carries with it the foretaste of eternal life. This places our everyday selfsacrificing in a whole different context and so we are better able to see how our dying to self leads to rising and eternal life. This is an awesome message the gospel offers: we, too, can be an icon to help others see and seek eternal life.

As we begin the month of August many begin to focus on back to school issues, pre-season training for the Fall sports teams and the final stretch of summer at the shore. We are preparing for a second module of religious education students participating in the summer intensive program. We are finalizing participation in the online religious education

program for those families who need extra flexibility due to student extra-curricular activities or the demands on parents in balancing their out of the home careers with the needs of their children. This year all of that has changed. We lack clarity at this time. We are preparing to serve our parishioners in the best way possible as we review the data and statistics. I encourage you to begin slowly returning back to Sunday Mass as you are able. Certainly, those with health issues need to be extra vigilant. Families with children are invited and encouraged to return to participating in Sunday Mass as another way to demonstrate the importance of prayer and the Eucharist in daily life. Thank you for continuing to form your family in our Catholic Faith.

I will be meeting with members of our Parish Finance Council for the regular quarterly meeting this coming Tuesday. This meeting will review our financial report for the previous fiscal year and review our proposed budget for the current fiscal year. I am grateful to these parishioners for their careful review and sage counsel regarding our financial condition.

Many of our parishioners, past and present, are utilizing the on-line Mass Intention request service. Thank you for being open and flexible to this adjustment. More to come in future weeks regarding Mass Intentions for the calendar year 2021.

Food For Thought: It’s our turn. After the crowd is fed, there are twelve baskets of food left. The number twelve represents the Church. It’s our turn to see the people and to be moved with compassion. It’s our responsibility to act. It’s our turn to take what’s available—however little there is—and do great things with it for Jesus, and for the Kingdom of God. Even with very little, even out of our own poverty, God can do things we thought impossible.

The seeing, the moving to compassion, the taking action begins at home. So often we are blind and do not see or are slow to action. Many of our children are hurting inside. They are addicted. They are lost or afraid. They have little hope for their future.

Often we focus on what we do not have instead of what needs to be done. We focus only on the problem and not the person.

It’s our turn to do great things for the Kingdom of God. These “great things” begin in small ways by taking small steps. What is one thing you can do this week to help turn a problem into a possibility?
