THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD is one of the major milestones in Jesus’ public ministry, in which he took Peter, James, and John up a mountain (generally believed to be Mount Tabor in Israel) to pray with him. There, he transfigured before them, appearing with Moses and Elijah. The voice of God the Father from heaven cried out, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” (Matthew 17:5). It is in this moment that Jesus is revealed to these disciples as the Son of Man, the Savior. Yet they are told to keep this encounter a secret until after his resurrection, a concept which they did not yet understand. As one of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary and an important aspect of Christian belief, the significance of the event is two-fold. Firstly, by exalting Jesus above all others, God reaffirms what we learned about Jesus at his baptism by John - that he is then Son of the Most High, King of the living, judge and ruler of all and serves as a sort of preview of his resurrection and glory. Second, it establishes that Jesus is the messenger of God, His voice on earth, and that all things are done through the will of the Father. Interestingly, we celebrate this great feast twice every year. The first occasion is on the Second Sunday of Lent. In each of the 3 cycles, we hear the story from the synoptic Gospels of Matthew (Year A), Mark (Year B) and Luke (Year C), and the communion antiphon references the decree from God referenced above (this is my Son, etc.). The placement of the accounts on this day are fitting, as we hear a lot in the weeks that follow about the last weeks of the life of Jesus before his crucifixion. The second time is on August 6th. The same Gospel is repeated in the respective years. When the 6th falls on a Sunday, the Feast supplants whichever Sunday in Ordinary Time the Church would normally observe that day. Although removed from the narrative through-line that we experience during Lent, the placement of this feast in the middle or Ordinary Time allows for a more joyous celebration to occur. Although not a Holy Day of Obligation, it IS an important day in the calendar of the Church, and those who are able are encouraged to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If most of us take some time to think about things, we would have to admit that the pressures of our everyday living tend to be our main focus. We are all concerned about calendars and schedules, bills and getting ahead, sickness and health. Our lives tend to be so busy that our immediate goal is to get through another day. What would happen if we would truly take some time to think about what possesses us? It takes conscious effort to reverse the question and ask, To whom do our possessions belong? To whom do we belong? In some sense these are questions about priorities and putting God truly at the center of our lives. The answers must be more than an intellectual commitment to grow in our relationship with God and have God as our center. We must stop building larger storage barns and begin changing the way we live so that our priorities are evident. Practically speaking, this probably means settling for fewer possessions. But with God at the center, we really gain everything-eternal life.

Our regular food collection continues to improve. The large bin in our gathering space serves as a subtle reminder inviting us to bring non-perishable food items for the poor and needy. You may bring your items whenever convenient for you. It need not be a specific weekend of the month. Some have even adopted the practice of having their children bring one item each week. This is a great stewardship witness! There is always a need for peanut butter, jelly, and boxed cereals. Thank you for your generous sharing so that we can assist in caring for the poor and needy. There is also a box on our website’s online giving link. I have found it easier to make a gift each month, in addition to my weekly stewardship and mortgage/building fund contribution, for the poor and needy. This is another way to serve the most vulnerable in our midst. Whatever you choose, thank you!

As we continue our journey through the summer months make sure to take time for the Lord. Going to Mass, whether here or while on vacation, is a big part of recreation during the summer months. It is also good to experience how other Roman Catholic Christians celebrate the Sacred Liturgy. Some of our parishioners have recently commented to me how much they appreciate how our parishioners pray together when we gather for the celebration of the Mass. It is true. Our congregation prays in unison and with a nice cadence that encourages others to join together. There is an ancient maxim from Prosper of Aquitaine: Lex Orand Legem Credendi Constituit; that is, The Law of Prayer Constituts the Law of Belief…or…The Way in

Last week I had the opportunity to spend some time with our Pastor Emeritus Father Bill Bausch. He is such an amazing person and a great story teller. As I was anxious to hear of his ability to live with his infirmities, he was equally interested in learning of my recent healthcare adventures. Father Bausch is synonymous with the Parish of Saint Mary. There is a lasting imprint upon us as a community of faith. As always, I assured him of our continued prayer as he lives graciously with his limitations. He is very grateful for the prayers, good wishes and many acts of kindness he receives from our parish community. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Which We Pray shows forth what we Believe. Thank you for being such good witnesses to the presence of Christ in our midst during our celebration of Eucharist.
