Ministry Members Are Needed

Whatever the reason may be, your community has a need for volunteer ministry members. Here is a snapshot of the ministries in our parish: There is no such thing as too many members in a given ministry. The ones outlined above serve frequently and as such require strength in numbers in order to effectively serve our parish community. As we return from our summer vacations and children begin school again, please prayerfully consider joining a ministry.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass and/or bring the Eucharist to the sick and homebound. Hospitality Assist with Baptisms, Weddings, and other events outside of regularly scheduled Masses.

Saint of the Week: Teresa of Avila, Virgin and Doctor, 1515-1582 Teresa, sometimes known as Teresa of Jesus, was born in Avila in Castile, Spain. She was one of nine children of Don Alonzo Sanchez de Cepeda and his second wife, Doña Beatrice Davila y Ahumada. Teresa wrote of her large family that "all, through the goodness of God, were like our parents in being virtuous, except Atmyself."theage of seven, Teresa was already intrigued by the lives of the saints. She and a younger brother, Rodrigo, decided that the easiest way to become a saint was to be martyred since martyrs seemed to have bought heaven very cheaply by their sufferings. Another is that they have a desire to give back to the worship community and decide to serve in that way. Yet another is the feeling that sitting in the pew is not enough and again there is that desire to be more involved.

It is a movement of Catholics across the United States to be healed, converted, formed, and unified by an encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist and sent out in mission “for the life of the world.” The National Eucharistic Revival and National Eucharistic Congress are a direct response to the Holy Father’s call for a “pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are” so that the Church in the United States might be “permanently in a state of mission” (Evangelii Gaudium, n. 25).

Why is it so important for the Church today All parishes have experienced a significant decline in the number of people coming to Mass and receiving the Sacraments in the recent past. Our own diocesan assessments have shown that this is a reality. We have also heard surveys report that among the Catholics who regularly attend Mass, about two thirds do not believe or understand that the Holy Eucharist is truly the substantial Presence of Jesus TheChrist.Holy Eucharist is a foundational teaching coming from the Lord Jesus Himself, who said to His disciples as He blessed the bread and the wine at the Last Supper, “Take, eat, this is my body” and then, “Take, drink it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant” (Mt 26:26 27). He also said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh” (Jn 6:51). Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

I will be attending a family wedding on Long Island this coming week. It will be good to catch up. I will not be hosting the annual gathering this year since many of us will be at the wedding. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Someone mentioned to me last week that Christmas was 4 months away! I didn’t know how to respond. The time continues ready or not. Make the most of each and every day. Enjoy the seasons as summer comes to an end and fall begins. Take some time to enjoy the more moderate temperatures. A walk, a bike ride, sitting outside enjoying friends (a favorite beverage, etc. ….)

As we begin the month of September let us pray for all those who embrace the vocation of teaching. May they be role models for their students and collaborators with parents in educating and forming young people. Let us also pray for students as they continue their journey through life and continue learning about our great country and the many possibilities that await them.

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Humility isn’t a matter of beating our breast or putting ourselves down. Humility is recognizing that we are gifted, enriched, and nourished by God and then reaching out to others in the same way. If we wish God to raise us up (“repaid at the resurrection of the righteous”) then we must live our lives raising others up. Each Sunday we are invited to God’s banquet table. We ourselves are nourished at the same time that we are called to share the abundance of God’s life by reaching out to others in need. We eat and drink in order to be gracious to others. This is the most profound humility! We continue to meet with couples interested in being married in the church. There are many in our midst who desire to strengthen their commitment to our Catholic Church. There is a lot of misinformation about the Catholic Church’s teaching on Marriage, Divorce and Annulment. Father Mike and I are both meeting with couples helping them to prayerfully discern taking the next step in their relationships. It can be a time of healing from past wounds and a time of great grace growing in God’s love for self and family. We are here to help those who might have questions. The Labor Day Civic Observance provides us an opportunity to reflect on and give thanks for the gift of human labor. Our Catholic Church has a long and distinguished history in advocating for just working conditions and compensation. We will observe the abbreviated mass schedule next weekend 3-4 September: Saturday 5:00pm; Sunday 10:00am. Please make note in your personal schedule. We will gather for mass on Labor Day at 9am in the Chapel. Come and join us giving thanks for all of the employment options our country has and for the continued safety of all workers.

Jesus does the same. His Gift of Eucharist deeply imprints in us the power of divine fidelity, inviting us to deepen our acceptance of his eternal embrace. Ronald Rolheiser’s, One Great Act of Fidelity, will guide our prayer and discussion of the tender gift of Eucharist.
