This is the height of vacation season, but as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given "extraterritorial rights," meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There's still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don't have a personal castle in the hills! --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. Believe or leave—a pretty clear choice. What shocks us into making the right choice? The problem is, many of us make the choice to stay with Jesus but live this new, self-giving life only halfheartedly. Couched in our belief-choice is really unbelief (in this gospel also portrayed as betrayal). Liturgy invites us to constantly assess the depth of our beliefcommitment. We judge our belief not on what we say or think but on what we do. “It is the spirit that gives life.” The Holy Spirit dwells within us and is the source of our life in Christ and of our commitment to believe wholeheartedly. Without the Spirit we would be unbelievers, returning to our “former way of life.” The Spirit enables us to enter into the rhythm of paschal mystery living—of dying and rising, of self-giving and celebrating the indwelling of God. Constant vigilance and openness to the Spirit within nudges our halfhearted response to a wholehearted one. Thank you for the kind welcome that you offered last weekend to Mother Mary of the Incarnation visiting our parish for the Annual Mission Cooperative organized by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Our Roman Catholic Church continues to be a leader in charitable assistance globally. We are among the leading non-governmental religious groups offering charitable assistance throughout the world. That is only possible when we, that is all stakeholders in our Church, recognize the importance of missionary work in our own country and throughout the world.
Our parish staff has been very busy this summer preparing for the coming months. Recruiting and forming new liturgical ministers; preparing catechists and material for the upcoming programs; calendar preparation; finalizing financial reports for submission to the Chancery Office and for presentation to parishioners and stakeholders; responding to the on-going requests for financial and charitable assistance to those in need. I am grateful to all of our parishioners who serve in leadership roles for their sage counsel and advice. The Pastoral Council, Finance Council, Trustees, Staff and others offer their wisdom and guidance as we continue to address and prioritize needs and develop a plan to fund them. Your generous, sacrificial stewardship enables us to fund our operation, reduce our mortgage and unpaid premiums debt, and continue to make repairs and improvements to our programs, buildings and technology. If you have not purchased your Super 50/50 Raffle chance, please do so this coming week. To those who have already participated…Thank You. Many of our parishioners are preparing their children to begin or return to school. It is an exciting time and yet it can be a stressful time. Let us remember these students, especially those who are going away from home for the first time, that they might continue to grow in wisdom, holiness and service. As always, thanks for all that you do and your faithfulness to the church and our parish. Don’t forget the Martha Mary Guild Clothing Sale. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
