Liturgical Vessels Chalice - The chalice is the cup that holds the wine that becomes the Precious Blood of Christ. No ordinary cup, the chalice is made from fine materials, befitting the role in which it plays during the consecration and afterwards. Chalices that have held the Precious Blood during Mass must be purified before being used again. The chalice used by the priest and other concelebrants is often, but not always, different than others, either taller, more ornate, et cetera.

Paten - From the Greek patané, meaning “plate”, the paten hold the unconsecrated hosts that become the Body of Christ. As is true of the chalice, the paten is made from fine materials, and also must be purified after use. The paten is brought forth during the offertory procession as a gift from the faithful.

Ciborium - Or the plural, ciboria, this vessel is usually bowl-shaped or otherwise cylindrical in nature and often has a veil or other covering, and is used to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle.

Flagon - A pitcher of varying sizes, which holds the sacramental wine to be presented at the offertory. Usually made of glass so that the wine can be seen by the faithful. Unlike the other vessels mentioned so far, this one does not require purification, as the wine contained within does not undergo transubstantiation.

Why do the vessels change during the year?

The short answer is: because we should if we can. The more complete answer: The changing of the vessels shows a progression of solemnity. The vessels used at Mass can often vary in design, level of ornate detail, decoration, etc. If a parish is in possession of more ornate vessels, they should be reserved for Solemnities, especially Christmas Day through its octave, and Easter through its octave.

In this parish, we use wooden vessels for Lent, as it is a penitential season and the norms of the Universal Church dictate that less decoration should be used. For Ordinary Time, we use silver. For Advent, Christmas and Easter, we use gold. For the Solemnities during Christmas and Easter, we have Father Griffin’s chalice, which is gold and contains more detail and decoration than the other gold presider’s chalice.

The 2020 Mass Intention Book will open on Monday, September 16 Currently, we are accepting appointments for scheduling multiple date specific Mass Intentions within the 2020 year. Appointments dates and times are: 

Monday, September 16, 2019 from 4 pm – 7 pm  Tuesday, September 17, 2019 from 10 am – 12 noon AND 2 pm – 4 pm Call and speak to a live person to make an appointment (no messages accepted) between 8:45 am –7:30 pm, Monday & Tuesday, 8:45 am - 6 pm, Wednesday & Thursday, or Sunday 9 am – 12 pm, with the parish office 732-780-2666.

Please complete the form on the reverse side prior to coming to your appointment (please write legibly and provide pronunciation where necessary).

Additional forms are available in the parish office or on the website.

Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so we can accommodate you properly.

Two intentions are accepted for weekday Masses and three intentions are accepted for weekend Masses, except for Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark. Stipends can be paid by cash, check, or credit card.

Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled before your appointment and you will be asked to choose another date.

After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multiintention form or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a firstcome first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

Sanctuary Lamps Consider donating the Sanctuary Lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Christ Chapel in memory of a loved one who has died or to honor a living person.

These intentions are on a weekly basis starting with the Sunday, therefore a new request will be published each week in the bulletin.

There will be a total of 104 Sanctuary Lamp Intentions: 52 weeks of the year for each of the Christ Chapel & Church lamps. The suggested donation for a Sanctuary Lamp is $25.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. We all claim to know Jesus; after all, we are for the most part faithful church-goers who weekly eat and drink in his company. This gospel warns us that this isn’t enough. There is an urgency about our paschal mystery living; we don’t have forever to make up our minds to respond to God’s offer of salvation. Each day we must take up our own cross, die to self, and live for the sake of others. This is how we enter through the narrow gate and how we get to know Jesus intimately enough to receive salvation: we must live and act like Jesus.

Becoming least is a metaphor for dying to self; this is what Jesus asks: that the first become the last. Yes, what limits the scope of salvation is not God’s reach but our response.

Our Summer Session Religious Education Module II is completed. We have received great feedback from parents and families from both Modules I & II. I am grateful to all those who help us provide the very best for our children and young people as they discover the rich traditions of our Catholic Faith. We have many returning catechists for this program and one or two new ones each year. I am grateful to these teachers for sharing their gifts so generously for our young parishioners.

Please think about gathering your clothing items for the Martha Mary Clothing Sale. The ladies work very hard in putting this together.

The efforts help to benefit charities in support of women’s and children’s issues. Please consult the bulletin for more details.

We are beginning to put together cost estimates for some of the projects this coming fiscal year.

You should begin to notice some work in the coming weeks. Unexpectedly, another a/c compressor needed to be replaced in our back building where the offices and meeting rooms are located. We will be replacing ceiling tiles and light fixtures in some areas this year and other areas in the years to come. Upgrading to the LED fixtures saves operational costs and maintenance costs by not replacing bulbs or ballasts. Later in the fall we will continue with pruning some trees and re-locating others to help prevent moss and mold growth on the exterior by allowing sun light to penetrate.

Walking with Purpose Bible Study/Faith Formation for women begins in a few weeks.

This has been a major part of our Adult Faith Formation plan. So many have grown in their faith and chosen to become more deliberate about matters of faith in their home and here in our community.

Additionally, we will continue offering traditional Bible Study for adults in our parish and co-hort 13. Thanks to all those who oversee these programs.

My family gathering was great last weekend.

This week my very good friend Fr. Kevin Huber, Pastor of Queen of All Saints Parish, Michigan City, IN & Chancellor for the Diocese of Gary, IN will be here for a few days. We met in August 1983 and have continued a close friendship. Just a reminder that we have an abbreviated Mass schedule Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day Weekend.
