LITURGICAL COLORS Throughout the liturgical year, the changing of the color of vestments worn by the clergy (and in some places, the underlaid altar cloth and communion veil) is a visually symbolic way of marking the tone of the celebration. GREEN - Ordinary Time Symbolizes life. Used in Ordinary Time, in which the Gospel readings tell of the story of Jesus’ earthly ministry, laden with parables and other teachable moments. WHITE - Christmas, Easter, Feasts and Solemnities of the Lord and Saints, Marian, Requiem Symbolizes purity, light, glory of God. Used during the joyous seasons of the year, as well as for important Holy Days, and at Masses of Christian Burial. VIOLET - Advent, Lent, Requiem Symbolizes preparation and penance. Used during the penitential seasons, sometimes used at Masses of Christian Burial and All Souls Day. ROSE - Gaudate Sunday, Laetare Sunday Symbolizes rejoicing, or anticipation of great things to come. Used on the penultimate Sundays of the penitential seasons to indicate a shift in mood from that of reflection to looking forward to the coming joyous season, but not fully living in that joy just yet. RED - Passion, Holy Spirit Used on Palm Sunday and Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion, and on feasts or memorials of martyrs, symbolizing the blood shed for the faith. Also used on Pentecost and at Confirmation to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirt.
OTHER COLORS GOLD or SILVER may be used as a substitute for White, with gold especially for the Christmas and Easter seasons. Also used as accent colors on vestments with other primary colors. BLACK is permitted for use at Masses for All Souls and Christian Burials, although not common in the United States. BLUE is associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although it is not used on vestments as a primary color, it may be otherwise featured. For example, all clergy in the Diocese of Trenton have cream-colored vestments with gold and blue accents, as the Cathedral is named in honor of the Assumption of Mary.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. When does discipleship not divide? One answer is when the commitment to discipleship is superficial and the disciple doesn’t have the fiery passion Jesus displays in the Gospel. About this lack of passion the disciple will be judged. Our call to discipleship is not nearly as dramatic as the stories of the scriptures proclaimed today. Our judgment comes over whether we are faithful to our yes to discipleship in the small, everyday things as well as the times when the more serious things come along. Is living God’s will and establishing the kingdom the absolute priority in our lives? Can we say yes? The Parish Religious Education Program summer session module II is midway. This is a major effort of our parish to support parents, children and families in their search for the sacred in everyday living. It is the role of all parishioners to assist parents in transmitting our Catholic Faith to their children. We have a great tradition here at Saint Mary Parish. We need to continue to build upon that tradition through evaluation and assessment and never adopt the attitude that our work is complete or we have arrived. Conversion happens throughout one’s lifetime. I continue the presentation of a New Missal for our parish worship. The Sunday Missal is complete so there should not be a need for pew cards at this time. Additionally, there are missals for our daily celebration of the Mass that have the readings printed. This is
important for those who comprehend better by reading. Also, those who may have hearing deficiencies or impairments should benefit from these resources to aid our full participation in our liturgical prayer. These volumes are organize by Year I and Year II cycle of weekday readings. I am most grateful to the members of our Parish Pastoral Council for the guidance that they offer to me and the staff as we carefully and deliberately discern our vision for the future. Throughout my tenure this group has become an important part of our decision making. Recently they offered regular guidance in the Diocese of Trenton Faith In Our Future process. It is necessary for us to begin to envision what parish life will look like in the 10-25 year future. How we will provide for the needs of the community. And how we can collaborate with other communities to be strong in our faith, joyful in hope and active in charity as good stewards. I thank them for their many sacrifices and their candid counsel. This weekend members of my paternal family will once again gather here in 07722. It seems as if I am the most centrally located of the group. My parents have been hosting this gathering since 1962 or so (before I was born). Last year we gathered here and it seemed to work for the group who now travel from Maryland, Virginia, Hamilton, NJ, Eastern PA, Northern NJ, Long Island, NY. It should be great fun as we continue this family tradition. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
