The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Solemnity in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15.

The celebration has been observed from the early days of the Church, likely beginning in the 5th century. While there is no account of Mary’s assumption in the New Testament, apocryphal texts give varying accounts of the end of life details of the Mother of Jesus.

The most widely told account is that the apostles of Jesus heard of the passing of Mary and went to pay their respects. It is said that Saint Thomas (yes, the doubting one, although this may very well be a story-telling device to connect the narratives) was not with the others, arriving 3 days afterwards. His late arrival led the others to decide to re-open the tomb, to allow Thomas to see the body, only to find that the body was not present, leading to the belief that she had risen from the dead as had Christ, and had ascended into Heaven.

While this is a touching story with many parallels to that of Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the veracity of the account is often called into question. Nevertheless, it was enough to convince authorities several centuries later to begin celebrating Mary’s resurrection and ascension.

This was later changed to a belief in the assumption of Mary. As there were no accounts of her physical body remaining on earth, it was surmised that rather than dying and rising again, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. This belief, as well as scriptural passages from the Psalms and Book of Revelation, led Pope Pius to declare with papal infallibility on November 1, 1950: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” and thus we honor Mary, Queen of Heaven on this Holy Day.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship

Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see below Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

For all parishioners: Congregating before and after Mass is prohibited, as per the bishop. There will be no children’s liturgy of the word dismissal. Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday).

We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. At weekday Masses, no one is to arrive prior to 8:30 AM. All Masses will be in the Chapel in the Parish Hall. Exposition remains suspended for now. Private adoration of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle is welcomed and encouraged at any time.

We welcome Rose Farrow to the Religious Education Department. Rose has been an active parishioner of the Parish of Saint Mary for many years. We look forward to working with Rose as the Pastoral Coordinator for Youth Catechesis and Service (Confirmation Preparation).

Dear Parents of our Confirmation candidates: We recognize that these are difficult times, with uncertainty and reasonable anxieties, especially with regards to our children. Like many school districts nationwide, we make plans and contingency plans. We do our best to be safe while seeking to come as close to normal practices as possible.

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by our Bishop on Friday, October 23, at 4 pm. Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed in our Church at one time, attendance will be limited to the candidate, his/her sponsor, and you, the parents. There will be assigned seating, so that safe distancing can be assured. All present will need to wear a face mask. The diocesan guidelines also dictate that there will not be actual physical contact in the conferral of the sacrament. The sponsor will stand behind the candidate without putting their hand on the shoulder of the candidate. The Bishop will anoint the candidate’s forehead with chrism using a single use swab. The Bishop will neither tap the cheek nor shake the hand of the candidate.

The Confirmation ceremony is NOT a Mass, so there will be no distribution of the Eucharist. We will have a practice on Saturday, October 17, immediately following the 4 pm Mass. If possible, the sponsor should be present for the practice. However, a parent can stand in for the sponsor.

In addition, we will have a professional photographer present. As we have done in past years, the candidates will gather in Madonna Hall beginning at 3 pm, while the parents and sponsors find their assigned seating in the Church. We intend to have a group photo taken in Madonna Hall with the candidates very briefly removing their masks for the photo. Information regarding ordering photos will be shared as soon as we have it.

In addition, we will be having a Confirmation Retreat on Sunday, September 13. It will begin with attendance at the 12 noon Mass and will end by 4 pm. It will be led by Colleen Rayner, who facilitated last year’s retreat, which was overwhelmingly praised by those who attended. The candidate should be accompanied by their sponsor if at all possible. If not, then one parent must attend.

Finally, all the necessary paperwork needs to be submitted as soon as possible. Before you submit anything to us, be sure to make and keep a copy for yourself. You can mail the paperwork to us, or drop it in the mailbox outside the Parish Center. If the office is open, you can bring it inside and give it to a member of the staff. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Dear First Communion Families, First Communion has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 18th and Sunday, October 25th at the 10 am and 12 pm noon Masses. We will be keeping the same day and time slot that you had originally been given through the lottery system last year.

(If you were the first Sunday last time, you will be the first Sunday this time) If this is a hardship for any reason or you don't remember what you were originally signed up for, please contact us and we will do our best to work with you.

We will be following the same protocols that have been in place here at the Parish of Saint Mary. Social distancing will be observed and masks will be worn. We will have the photographer take candid shots of your child receiving the Eucharist and we will also be taking the group picture with Father. If you wish to have a private session before the Mass with the photographer, please contact him for details. Dave Mellone 732-859-3352 Once the church office is open again, after Labor Day, please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so. You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass.

Your child should attend with one parent only. We will be reviewing how to receive the Eucharist and the children will practice with the unconsecrated host.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Canaanite woman’s single mindedness on behalf of her daughter is rewarded with her being healed. This gospel challenges us to be just as single minded about placing our request before God, and also just as single minded about our own inclusive ministry to others. It’s interesting that the Canaanite woman’s cry to Jesus was that he “have pity on me” (not on her daughter, although that is surely implied in the request). This gives us an insight into our inclusivity and ministry: we must be so “at one” with others that their plight is our own plight. Ministry is more than doing for another; it implies an empathy with another that discloses the unity we share as members of the body of Christ. One dimension of living the paschal mystery is that we work to increase our unity with one another, which in turn draws us to reach out to others in mercy and compassion, no matter who they are.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is observed Saturday, 15 August. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am in the Church. I invite you to come and pray that through the intercession of Mary our Church will continue to grow in holiness and service. The Assumption is the Patron of our Diocese of Trenton, let us pray in a special way for His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop and Monmouth, Ocean, Mercer, and Burlington Counties.

Our Summer Religious Education Program second module concluded this Friday. I have received many positive comments from parents and the participants as well. We are very blessed to have a dedicated teaching/ catechetical staff, many of whom continue with us each year.

We will continue to evaluate this program and strive to offer the very best faith formation opportunities for our parishioner families.

I have begun conversations about the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Saint Mary Parish as we know it on this campus in 2022. It is my hope that the focus be on Community Building and Spiritual Renewal.

The summer months are quickly passing.

Make sure to take some time and enjoy the summer sun. Make a visit to the beach. Take a walk on the sand or the boardwalk. Enjoy the beauty of creation that is all around us.

We have many beautiful parks throughout Monmouth County for public enjoyment. As the days become shorter the glimpse of autumn becomes more apparent.
