Lifelong Catechesis - Week of August 13th to August 19th

READINGS FOR THE WEEK:

13 Sunday: NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY

14 Monday: Dt 10:12-22/Mt 17:22-27

15 Tuesday: [THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY]

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: What does God’s voice sound like when you pray and listen to Jesus?

16

17

19

Question for Youth: In today’s Gospel, Peter began to walk on the water when he was focused on Jesus. He began to sink when he got distracted by the storm. What is your life like when you are focused on Jesus and your relationship with God? How is it different when you get caught up in other things?

Question for Adults: Tell about your experiences of hearing God speak in “tiny voices” rather than in the winds and earthquakes of life.

Sanctuary Lamp

Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Chapel in honor of a living or deceased loved one. One intention is accepted per week (Sunday - Saturday) for the Lamp.

The suggested donation is $25. Request online HERE.

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15. The celebration has been observed from the early days of the Church, likely beginning in the 5th century.

While there is no account of Mary’s assumption in the New Testament, apocryphal texts give varying accounts of the end of life details of the Mother of Jesus. The most widely told account is that the apostles of Jesus heard of the passing of Mary and went to pay their respects. It is said that Saint Thomas (yes, the doubting one, although this may very well be a story-telling device to connect the narratives) was not with the others, arriving 3 days afterwards. His late arrival led the others to decide to re-open the tomb, to allow Thomas to see the body, only to find that the body was not present, leading to the belief that she had risen from the dead as had Christ, and had ascended into Heaven. While this is a touching story with many parallels to that of Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the veracity of the account is often called into question. Nevertheless, it was enough to convince authorities several centuries later to begin celebrating Mary’s ascension.

This was later changed to a belief in the assumption of Mary. As there were no accounts of her physical body remaining on earth, it was surmised that rather than dying and rising again, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. This belief, as well as scriptural passages from the Psalms and Book of Revelation, led Pope Pius to declare with papal infallibility on November 1, 1950:

“By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” and thus we honor Mary, Queen of Heaven on this Holy Day.

Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

Lawrence was appointed a deacon under Pope Saint Sixtus II. It was Lawrence’s job to handle the treasury, distribute alms to the poor, and take care of the sick, of which more than 1,000 were under the care of the Church at this time.

In 257, Emperor Valerian issued an edict against all Christians. A year later, Pope Sixtus was arrested and led off to be executed. It is written that Lawrence followed the Pope, weeping, and asked him, “Father, where are you going without your deacon?” The pope replied, “I do not leave you my son. You shall soon follow me.” Lawrence was overjoyed to think that God would soon call him. The deacon set out to find- Read More HERE.

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Most of us will not have the experience of Peter nothing in our human experience leads us to expect that we will ever walk on water! But that is not the goal of faith or of Christian living. Worship is. The real challenge is to see in this gospel the way we might encounter Jesus in our everyday lives not as One walking on water, but as One who dwells in the other in need. In a sense, then our paschal mystery living reverses the roles and we are the ones called to see Jesus in anyone who is calling out for help, in anyone who seems to be “drowning” in the chaos of everyday living, and in anyone who cries out to be saved. In this reversed situation the homage doesn’t come to us for any good we might do, but our response to those in need is an act of homage of the God whom we serve in the other. It takes more faith to see Jesus in the other than to walk on water! This, because it demands a great self-emptying on our part to see dignity in those in need. But this is also the glimpse of the life that comes out of our dying as serving another is an encounter with Jesus, the One who saves.

Last weekend we welcomed 18 new families to our parish community. They took time from their busy schedules to participate in the New Parishioner Orientation. This is a time when our parish staff persons share what is offered here in our parish, amongst what is expected of our members. I am grateful to all those who participated and those who prepared the presentations. May we continue to grow in our love of God and increase our identity as stakeholders in our parish.

This coming week we observe the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 15 August. Please consult the Worship Schedule for mass opportunities both here and

at Saint Catherine, Holmdel. This solemnity is also the principal Patron of the Diocese of Trenton. Let us pray in a special way for His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, and all those who serve the People of God in Central New Jersey. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary may we continue to grow in holiness and service.

Next weekend we will welcome to our parish Sr. Speranza and Sr. Sol. from the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara religious institute. Sisters are here as part of the Mission Cooperative of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. There will be a collection to support the church’s missionary activity. A category has been created for on-line givers; checks may be made payable to Saint Mary Parish. Thank you for your kind and generous support of those serving in the missions, especially the foreign missions.

Last weekend we welcomed the August Module for our RE Summer Intensive Program for grade levels 1 – 6. This is the second of two sessions offered by our parish. Let us continue to pray for all those parents, family members and catechists who pass on our faith to the coming generations.

I am grateful to all those who have made a gift or pledge in support of the 2023 Annual Catholic Appeal. Together we have reached our goal. Please continue to make your pledge payments until you have completed the commitment. The rebate funds that will be received in February 2024 will be used toward the continued replacement of electrical fixtures with LED fixtures. THANK YOU! Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.
