Saint Lawrence August 10 is the feast of Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr. In the 3rd century A.D., Lawrence was one of seven deacons who served under Pope Sixtus II. The emperor Valerian had ordered the execution of Christians in Rome - the Pope and his deacons were captured on August 7th and all but Lawrence were immediately beheaded. (The memorial of Sixtus II and Companions falls on this date).

Lawrence was offered the opportunity to have his life spared if he would hand over all the treasures of the Church. Lawrence asked for 3 days’ time in order to do this. In that time, he distributed church property to the poor, needy, etc. When the emperor demanded the treasures on August 10, Lawrence presented him with the poor, the suffering, the faithful of the community, and declared to the Emperor that these were the true treasures of the Church and that the Church would be forever richer than the Emperor could ever hope to be.

Valerian ordered the death of Lawrence. Tradition stories tell that he was ordered to be burned alive, strapped to a gridiron over a bed of hot coals. Legend states that after Lawrence had suffered for some time, he exclaimed to his executioners, “I’m well done on this side, turn me over!” Saint Lawrence is thus the patron saint of cooks, comedians, and also of the poor and of deacons.

Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts.

All women are invited to join Walking with Purpose Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study for women that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Christ. Through personal study and small group discussions, the group helps to link our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church.

The 2018-2019 program will meet weekly Thursdays in September at 12:00-1:30 pm or 7:30-9 pm through April 2019.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We always like the language of receiving eternal life; language of death and self-sacrifice is much more difficult for us to take in. The two go together. If we wish to live we must be willing to die to ourselves.

Lest we get too discouraged, we must always remember that paschal mystery is a rhythm of dying and rising. We are able to embrace death because, through Jesus, we know that death always leads to life. This is why, unlike the crowd who simply didn’t understand, we are able to believe: because Jesus has gone before us and taught us that death leads to life. The rhythm of the paschal mystery enables us to believe. Cross leads to resurrection.

This week we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 August 2018). It is always holy day…Solemnity of the Church; however, some years, in conformity with the liturgical guidelines of the USCCB, the obligation to participate in the Eucharist has been lifted. This is also the celebration of the Patroness of the Diocese of Trenton.

We are beginning the second module for the Summer Intensive Religious Education Program.

I am grateful to all those responsible for this initiative and to all of our parishioners for their cooperation during this time. Based on the comments from the first module it seems as though our development of this initiative meets many of the concerns shared with us by parents and other stakeholders of our parish community.

It is so very important that all we do as a parish flow from our experience of Eucharist and that our personal prayer, stewardship and service lead us back to the Eucharist as a thanksgiving and

food to continue the journey as disciples. Anyone who desires to assist with our Faith Formation and Religious Education Ministries should reach out to Dr. Jim Bridges. I know that he would welcome committed persons to assist with these ministries.

Next weekend we welcome Mother Mary Incarnation as part of the Society for the Propagation for the Faith Mission Cooperative Program that our Diocese has hosted for many years. Our Diocesan Delegate for this work is Reverend Fr. Peter James Alindogan. Father PJ continues the great work of his predecessors in continuing to raise our conscious for the needs of the missions, both far and near. I know that you will be generous in your support of this noble effort. Next weekend I will be hosting some of my paternal family members. We have been gathering during the summer months for more than 50 years.

This year it is quite possible that there will be four generations of family members in attendance. My parents have hosted this each year. It was thought that I could host this year since people will be travelling from Maryland, Virginia, Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. It is good for us to continue this tradition so that the successive generations might continue to know one another.

Our Super 50/50 Raffle continues to make slow and steady progress. The current tally is listed in the bulletin and posted in the narthex of the church. Invite family members and friends who might like to participate in this by doing so online or at our parish office. I am grateful to you for your support and willingness to assist us in reducing our financial liabilities. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Infertility—Understanding your options Despite medical advances across the board, infertility is an increasing struggle that more and more couples face. As the desire to conceive and bear a child grows stronger, many couples are swept up along a pathway of medical testing and treatments that become very questionable and problematic from the standpoint of our Catholic morality, and from basic secular understanding of natural law. Also, these treatments often have negative impact on the woman’s health, the couple’s relationship, and the household finances. If you are seeking guidance about infertility treatments, please remember that our Catholic Faith teaches that any treatment which replaces the marital act itself (such as, but not limited to artificial insemination or in-vitro fertilization) is against the very essence of the unitive meaning of the marriage and is morally damaging to all parties involved.

Treatments that seek to properly diagnose and correct underlying problems or assist fertility, without replacing the marital act are encouraged by the Church to help couples achieve conception.
