The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Solemnity & Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15. The celebration has been observed from the early days of the Church, likely beginning in the 5th century. While there is no account of Mary’s assumption in the New Testament, apocryphal texts give varying accounts of the end of life details of the Mother of Jesus. The most widely told account is that the apostles of Jesus heard of the passing of Mary and went to pay their respects. It is said that Saint Thomas (yes, the doubting one, although this may very well be a story-telling device to connect the narratives) was not with the others, arriving 3 days afterwards. His late arrival led the others to decide to re-open the tomb, to allow Thomas to see the body, only to find that the body was not present, leading to the belief that she had risen from the dead as had Christ, and had ascended into Heaven. While this is a touching story with many parallels to that of Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the veracity of the account is often called into question. Nevertheless, it was enough to convince authorities several centuries later to begin celebrating Mary’s resurrection and ascension. This was later changed to a belief in the assumption of Mary. As there were no accounts of her physical body remaining on earth, it was surmised that rather than dying and rising again, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. This belief, as well as scriptural passages from the Psalms and Book of Revelation, led Pope Pius to declare with papal infallibility on November 1, 1950: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” and thus we honor Mary, Queen of Heaven, on this Holy Day.

Quo vadis…

August 11, 2019

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The final line of this gospel is most demanding and directly applicable to our daily paschal mystery living: “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” We’ve been entrusted with much: furthering Jesus’ mission of bringing the good news of salvation to all his disciples. We have been entrusted with even more: we are not simply servants, but because of our baptism and being plunged into the paschal mystery we become members of the body of Christ. Our faithfulness is measured by even more than doing God’s will; it is measured by our being the presence of the risen Christ for all those we meet. The parallel the gospel offers is between possessions or Person. The real surprise of the gospel is that we ourselves, in our daily paschal mystery living of dying to ourselves for the sake of others, become more perfectly that presence of the very Master for whom we are vigilant. We ourselves are treasure, too, when we are faithful disciples. This weekend we offer our prayer for all those students preparing to begin their first year in college, those returning to college, and all students as they prepare for a new academic year. Education is such a great opportunity to grow in our perspective and vision. The world is a very different place today. Globalization challenges us to think in terms that are much broader and far-reaching. The challenge remains that we not become unsteady in our own self-identity and the core foundation that supports our self-identity. The Catholic Community is one of those places where foundational or core values are lived in harmony with those that are fostered in the home. Our Catholic Church has, since the Second Vatican Council, stressed the importance of the Domestic Church of the Home. It is my hope that our parish community will continue to support parents and their children as they grow in faith. It is in this way that young people leave their home with the needed tools to live as responsible young adults in university life and as they move into their own residences. Globalization also challenges how we

6

transmit our faith from generation to generation. Learning models for children, adolescents and young people continue to evolve. Some have found the FORMED website to be a helpful tool in learning more about their faith. We have been gathering feedback regarding permanent hardcover missal/hymnals. There was a variety of options to consider. There was no one perfect product to serve our needs. We are working to finalize the choice and work with the publishing house for a final quote to be integrated into this fiscal year’s budget. There was a great deal of consensus around this one particular publication. I was not familiar with it, nor was it my first choice, however taking the lead of others I took some time to review and found many good qualities that would serve us well. You may be asking why we are making this shift? Firstly, environmental stewardship. Annual disposable missal/hymnals are simply not a good use of paper. Secondly, while the original cost is sizeable, the long term savings is considerable given that we expect to use these books for 10-15 years. Thirdly, I think they are more dignified and fitting for our worshipping community. The layout, print size, and paper grade are in response to comments that I and others involved with our liturgical preparation have heard from you our faithful parishioners. Look for these to be in use Advent 2019 and forward. Many thanks to all those who offered feedback during this process. I am grateful to Andrew Macirowski for overseeing this and inviting a cross-section of parishioners to participate in the process. This coming week we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of our Diocese of Trenton and our Cathedral Church. It is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholic Christians. We have scheduled a Mass on the evening of 14 August for your convenience in addition to the 15 August 9 am daily Mass. It is a wonderful time for us to pray that Mary, Assumed into Heaven will continue to intercede for us to her Son, Jesus Christ. Please join us for this Solemnity as we pray for our Parish especially during this time of transition. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Do you remember this hilarious comedy of the ‘80s, with Dustin Hoffman starring as Tootsie? Well, 2019 Tony award winner, Santino Fontana, is now portraying Tootsie in a wonderful new Broadway rendition at the Marquis Theatre. The Chicago Tribune dubs it as “a triumphant comedy, as outlandishly successful as The Producers”. It has received the Tony award for best book of a musical, and show critics have called it “uproariously funny”. Fortunately, the Martha Mary Guild will be able to enjoy this musical/comedy on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019. $115.00 includes the price of the ticket and the bus, which will leave St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. sharp. Lunch arrangements are on your own.
