THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD is one of the major milestones in Jesus’ public ministry, in which he took Peter, James, and John up a mountain (generally believed to be Mount Tabor in Israel) to pray with him. There, he transfigured before them, appearing with Moses and Elijah. The voice of God the Father from heaven cried out, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” (Matthew 17:5). It is in this moment that Jesus is revealed to these disciples as the Son of Man, the Savior. Yet they are told to keep this encounter a secret until after his resurrection, a concept which they did not yet understand.

As one of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary and an important aspect of Christian belief, the significance of the event is two-fold. Firstly, by exalting Jesus above all others, God reaffirms what we learned about Jesus at his baptism by John - that he is then Son of the Most High, King of the living, judge and ruler of all - and serves as a sort of preview of his resurrection and glory. Second, it establishes that Jesus is the messenger of God, His voice on earth, and that all things are done through the will of the Father.

Interestingly, we celebrate this great feast twice every year. The first occasion is on the Second Sunday of Lent. In each of the 3 cycles, we hear the story from the synoptic Gospels of Matthew (Year A), Mark (Year B) and Luke (Year C), and the communion antiphon references the decree from God referenced above (this is my son, etc.). The placement of the accounts on this day are fitting, as we hear alot in the weeks that follow about the last weeks of the life of Jesus before his crucifixion.

The second time is on August 6th. The same Gospel is repeated in the respective years. When the 6th falls on a Sunday, the Feast supplants whichever Sunday in Ordinary Time the Church would normally observe that day. Although removed from the narrative through-line that we experience during Lent, the placement of this feast in the middle for Ordinary Time allows for a more joyous celebration to occur. Although not a Holy Day of Obligation, it is an important day in the calendar of the church, and those who are able are encouraged to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist.

Updated Covid-19 Protocols at St Mary Parish

Bishop’s Anniversary Blessings 2021; October 10, Ocean/Monmouth

There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed .

All couples celebrating their 1st, 25th or 50+ wedding anniversary during the 2020 or 2021 calendar year are invited to share the Eucharist, reaffirm your sacred wedding vows, and receive Bishop O’Connell’s Episcopal Blessing.

Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, St Mary has a few requirements for Mass. 

The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave.



During the Our Father please refrain from holding hands or making contact with any nonfamily member.



With the lifting of the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass, we have discontinued the broadcast Mass after June 13, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There remain many options on TV and the internet for those who choose.

As always, we thank you for your cooperation and support as we resume our normal celebration of the liturgy.

Couples from Ocean and Monmouth Counties may attend the Mass and Blessing at the CoCathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine in Freehold on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 3 pm. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, attendance at Mass is limited but both events will be livestreamed. Couples may register through their parish or online pending approval of their parish.

Pantry Coordinator Open Door Food Pantry and Advocacy Program is seeking a part-time Pantry Coordinator to assist with daily operations. The coordinator will report to the Director.

This position will be 3 hours per day Monday through Thursday, typically 9am to 12pm.

That is what the new proposed document to be drafted in the next few months will consider, similar to the USCCB document on the Holy Eucharist (“Happy Are Those Called to His Supper”) published in 2006, not a set of national norms on Eucharistic reception, although worthy receiving of the Holy Eucharist will surely be addressed.

Quo vadis…

Dear Parishioners: Today the Universal Church celebrates the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. What we need before receiving Eucharist is a personal relationship with Jesus. There is a curious paradox here: on the one hand, we need to feast on Jesus who is the Bread of Life in order to strengthen our belief, our relationship with him. On the other hand, we must have a relationship with Jesus (belief) in order for Eucharist to nourish us. Belief and bread from heaven come together in Jesus, who gives himself to us. If Jesus is the bread from heaven given for us and we are the body of Christ, then we must conclude that we ourselves are to be bread from heaven that fosters eternal life for others. As God has “set his seal” on Jesus, so through baptism and confirmation has God “set his seal” on us.

Jesus gives himself as bread from heaven; we give ourselves to others as bread from heaven when we confirm our belief by means of the everyday actions we do. Treating another as the body of Christ is believing. Taking time to be in touch with our spiritual needs is believing. Reaching out in compassion to others is believing. Self-giving is believing.

Last weekend we heard the message of Father Dawit and how the Church in Ethiopia continues its mission with the prayer and finance resources from throughout the globe to assist them. Many of you generously shared your financial support in person, others on-line and others have asked if we would accept contributions this weekend as well?

The answer is yes. Place your check made payable to St Mary with Mission Co-op in memo in the box with your weekly offering.

Online contributions will also be accepted for this noble cause. Thank you for your steadfast prayer and your continued support of the missionary efforts of our Catholic Church.

It is hard to believe that the month of August is upon us. The summer is nearly half complete.

There has been a lot of coming and going within our community. Parishioners and staff are taking time for some holiday, rest and re-creation. This is good. A time to re-connect with family and friends is good too. Don’t forget to make it a priority to participate in the Sunday mass wherever you find yourself. The Lord awaits us especially on Sunday. Make the celebration of the Eucharist a deliberate part of your summer time away.

Next weekend we will welcome those families who have pre-registered their children for the August (in person) Summer Intensive Religious Education session. There are more than 100 children pre-registered for this session this year.

The July session was a positive experience for the participants, their parents, the catechists and all involved. It is my hope that the August session will once again be a positive experience. Next week the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the patronal observance of our Diocese of Trenton and our Diocesan Cathedral. Let us pray that Mary, Mother of the Church will continue to intercede for us.

A 12-WEEK PROGRAM FOR THE DIVORCED AND SEPARATED WHAT IS IT? The program is called “Surviving Divorce: Hope and Healing for the Catholic Family”. It is a DVD series developed by Rose Sweet, a dynamic author and speaker who has developed this series to help Christians and their families heal from divorce!

We meet weekly on Monday nights for twelve consecutive weeks beginning on September 13, 2021 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of God Church in the Chapel Basement located at 26 Leonardville Road, New Monmouth (entrance in the back).

Summer Games 2021 at the Parish of St. Mary Come one, come all! Open to all members of the parish, these events are for all ages:  8/3 Pilates 7pm (Rain or shine) Bring your own mat, towel, water. Meet in the courtyard in front of the Spiritual center.  8/11- Basketball 7pm-Mini-clinic and tournament. Bring your own water.

Tai Chi The causes of falls in the elderly include such things as muscle weakness, poor balance and vision, lack of confidence at moving about, and the effect of medication, walking on uneven ground, over-reaching, or over stepping.

Tai Chi is a low impact, weight bearing exercise; and with regular Tai Chi practice, it helps build internal strength, reduce falls, and improve the quality of life.

Barbara Schaflin, certified instructor of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention; Diabetes; Memory; and Rehabilitation/Rejuvenation, has taught 103 participants this past year in the various disciplines. Beginner and Advanced Classes are offered Thursday mornings, in the Northax (Gathering Space) 10:00-10:45; 11:00 -12 Noon respectively.
