Chrism Mass Co-Cathedral -St. Robert Bellarmine 61 Georgia Rd., Freehold NJ 07728 Monday, 10 April at 7:30 pm During the Mass, Bishop David O’Connell will bless the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and consecrate the Sacred Chrism.

We use the first for adult catechumens and infants, the second for anointing the sick, and the Sacred Chrism for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests, and the consecration of altars. These oils will be received by the parish at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and will be used for sacramental life of our parish.

Musical Notations: Holy Week Salutations, Friends! The music ministry has been working tirelessly for several weeks as we prepare for Holy Week: Palm (Passion Sunday) through the Sacred Triduum. The Sacred Triduum is, as explained by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, “The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum—from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery. The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.”

As you may notice, if you attend all three days, there are no concluding rites and blessing on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Only at the Easter Vigil, which is the solemn blessing, with a thrice sung “Amen” in response, followed by the dismissal of “Go in peace, Alleluia, Alleluia”! The Alleluia and Gloria return to the liturgy during the Easter season and thenceforth for the remainder of the liturgical year. Like Christmas, Easter is a season, and for the entire octave, the church celebrates exuberantly!

This year, we have invited our religious education students, especially those who are preparing for their First Holy Communion, to participate in a unique way at the 5 pm Mass this weekend. They have learned the proper chant “Hosanna to the Son of David”, which is sung at the Solemn Entrance, where the whole of the church proclaims Christ’s triumphant entry in to Jerusalem. The youth schola join the efforts with the parish choir, bell choir, and a variety of other instrumentalists throughout the week to bring the very best we have to offer Our Lord. At the Easter Vigil and on Easter Sunday at the 10:15 am Mass, the choirs offer both the chant and polyphonic arrangement of the Eastertide Marian Antiphon Regina Caeli.

Parishioners asked WHY? The Veiling of Images and Crosses - Deacon Vincent Rinaldi 1. Does the new Missale Romanum allow for the veiling of statues & crosses?

The Missale Romanum, editio typica tertia, provides a rubric at the beginning of the texts for the Fifth Sunday of Lent (originally the beginning of Passiontide), which allows that: “the practice of covering crosses and images in the Church from the Fifth Sunday of Lent is permitted, according to the judgment of the Conferences of Bishops. Crosses remain veiled until the end of the celebration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday; images remain veiled until the beginning of the Easter Vigil.”

2. Have the Bishops of the Unites States expressed the judgment on this practice?

Yes. On June 14, 2001, the Latin Church members of the USCCB approved an adaptation to number 318 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal which would allow for the veiling of crosses and images in this manner.

3. When may crosses and images be veiled?

Crosses and images may be veiled on the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Crosses are unveiled following the Good Friday Liturgy, while images are unveiled before the beginning of the Easter Vigil.

4. Is the veiling of crosses and statues required?

No. The veiling is offered as an option, at the discretion of the local pastor.

5. What is the reason for the veiling of crosses and images?

The veiling of crosses and images is a sort of “fasting” from sacred depictions which represent the paschal glory of our salvation. Just as the Lenten fast concludes with the Paschal feast, so too, our fasting from the cross culminates in an adoration of the holy wood on which the sacrifice of Calvary was offered for our sins. Likewise, a fasting from the glorious images of the mysteries of faith and the saints in glory culminates on the Easter night with a renewed appreciation of the glorious victory won by Christ, risen from the tomb to win for us eternal life.

6. What do the veils look like?

While liturgical law does not prescribe the form or color of such veils, they have traditionally been made of simple, lightweight cloth, without ornament. Purple signifies penance, red signifies martyrdom.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate Palm Sunday of Our Lord’s Passion and Death. We cry this day “Hosanna!” but, unlike the people of the city of Jerusalem long ago, we need not ask “Who is this?” This is the one who models for us the mystery of life: die to self so that we might be exalted, raised to new life. This week we celebrate in pointed liturgies the meaning of our whole Christian living: dying to self so that God can raise us up, too. This dying can be as simple as setting aside the time to participate in all the Triduum liturgies or as demanding as to recognize what in our lives we still need to abandon to be exalted as sons and daughters of God living new life.

There are many opportunities for prayer and worship during this Holy Week. The Chrism Mass at our Co-Cathedral of Saint Robert Bellarmine is held annually Monday at 7:30 pm.

This is the time when His Excellency, The Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, CM – Bishop of Trenton, blesses the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens and consecrates the Sacred Chrism. These are the gifts given by the Most Reverend Bishop to each parish as they celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil and throughout the Liturgical Year.

I am grateful to John Rivell and Gared Walters for generously completely cleaning the Baptismal Font in our Church. We have begun some work in Madonna Hall. The removal of the stage area was scheduled and budgeted for this year. Upgrading the ceiling lighting will also be completed in a few weeks. This work will be underwritten by a rebate program from our supplier and will help us reduce our energy use.

Black out shades have been ordered to help us with multi-media presentations.

Due to significant water damage from the recent snowstorm, our insurance carrier is funding a

completely new interior drop ceiling, as well as new fire rated sheet rock ceiling in the boiler room. This was unplanned but nice. The roof is under warranty and the installer has made repairs. There are design flaws that will need to be corrected next go around. I hope that we can completely repaint the space the same color as the parish hall and purchase tables on wheels for easy set up during the coming fiscal year. All of this is possible through the generous stewardship of our active parishioners.

Thanks to all those who have helped to prepare our parish facilities and liturgies.

You should have received our Holy Week schedule quad-fold in the Easter mailing. Please refer to it regarding the Triduum, Blessing of Easter Baskets, and Easter Sunday Special Mass Schedule with all Masses in the Church. Please note that the Solemn Easter Vigil will be celebrated at 7:30 pm in accord with universal church norms. Invite your family members and friends who might be marginalized or alienated from the church community to join in the Eucharist this Easter. Remember that visitors will be with us and hospitality can be a wonderful hallmark of our community. Please welcome those who might be joining us even if they are in “your seat.” The Easter Collection is a major source of revenue for our parish community. Thank you for your continued deliberate, generous stewardship in support of our parish and the many ministries and projects which are underway. I encourage you to car pool when coming to Mass on Easter Sunday.

After a brief business meeting, Sr. Debra’s program will begin at 12:30. Please note: At this meeting the Guild will be collecting gently used or new books for children ages 5-13 to donate to the Kateri Day Camp.

Pizza Party The students at Future Generation love to get their hands dirty and get involved in the classroom. On Friday, March 17th, the children had a ‘make your own pizza’ party at school. With a generous donation of pizza supplies by Blaze Pizza, the children were able to express their individuality by making their very own pizza the way they wanted to. We are so proud of the great job that they did!

Why not be part of the Saint Mary Parish Sewing Circle (Quilting and Sewing Ministr y)?

Members make with love baby quilts, pillow for surgery patients, lap blankets for elderly and handicapped, hats, dog beds, tote bags, chemotherapy turbans/caps and other charity projects to benefit patients at CentraState hospital, individuals upon their request and organizations in need in the community at large. The Sewing circle also works on liturgical projects when needed.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW: Most projects are simple sew. Ability to use a sewing machine is a plus (experience with quilting is not necessary) No sewing experience, no worries, we will teach you!

WHEN and WHERE: Come when you are available. Work at home in your spare time on projects then bring to a meeting. The ministry meets at Saint Mary Parish in Meeting Room #11 twice a month (excluding weeks with holidays). Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 1 to 3pm.
