PASSIONTIDE From the 5th Sunday of Lent onward, you will notice that the statuary in the church will be covered.

The practice of veiling the images of Christ and the saints goes back to medieval times, where, beginning on Passion Sunday (the 5th Sunday of Lent in the modern liturgical calendar) all images other than the stained glass windows and the stations of the cross were covered in purple or red cloth. This was, and is done, in order to draw our focus to the Passion and death of our Lord, and remind us that without the sacrifice on the cross, there would be no resurrection and salvation.

This is especially poignant on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, where we recall the passion in detail.

Removing the images of the crucifix from our eyes leaves us in a state without the image of our salvation and draws our prayer inward, as we focus on the hope of the coming Holy Season of Easter. Removing the images of the saints (members of the church triumphant) draws our focus to our own penitence, temporarily blocking that promise of the communion of saints from our physical view.

These images are customarily unveiled during the singing of the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. The statuary in our church makes this difficult, due to ladders being necessary for the images of the Holy Family and the Christ behind the sanctuary, so they are unveiled during the decorating of the Church on Holy Saturday, an event to which all are invited to participate!

The New Day Bereavement Support Group Ministry of Consolation Invites You…to participate in a nine week program for those who are grieving the death of loved ones and want to work through the tasks of grief in a structured way using the New Day Journal, A Journey from Grief to Healing. Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Lent. We are interconnected not only in grace (we are all members of the body of Christ) but also in our sinfulness.

The gospel reminds us that we encounter Jesus at our own risk: we will be confronted with the truth of our own sinfulness. But also encounter with Jesus brings hope: in the confrontation and invitation to repent Jesus offers new life (see first reading). We begin the last third of the Lenten season. Even if we haven’t been all that faithful to our chosen Lenten practices, it isn’t too late now to resolve to open ourselves to encounter with Jesus so that we can approach Easter with a renewed spirit seeking new life. Like the crowd in the gospel, it is often easier for us to focus on the sins of others than on our own weaknesses. When we are closely connected with others—in family, workplace, etc.—they can easily rub us the wrong way. But also like the crowd in the gospel, we can encounter Jesus and face the truth of ourselves. Lent is a time to encounter Jesus, turn from our sinfulness in repentance, and seek divine mercy. The remarkable good news of this gospel is that by facing and repenting of our own sinfulness we establish new relations with those around us. Acknowledgment of our own sins and how we have hurt others builds us into stronger members of Christ’s body.

Our registered parishioners should have received the Easter Mailing. Please take time to review the materials and keep them in a convenient place for easy reference. Many thanks to those who have volunteered to participate in the Holy Week Services. Your

generous participation adds to the prayerfulness and solemnity of our liturgical experience. Not receiving this mailer indicates that your family is not registered here in our parish. Please contact the parish office to inquire. This is a time when we should make church, praying together as a community and celebrating the Sacraments a priority. Our Penance Service is scheduled for this weekend, Sunday 7 April at 3:00 pm with visiting clergy present to celebrate individual confessions. Please come and make this an opportunity of grace for you in your journey of faith. Parents, please make it a priority to bring your children to this Penance & Reconciliation Service so that the habit of going to confession becomes part of their identity as Catholic Christians. It is a wonderful way for us to teach through example the awesomeness of God’s mercy.

I encourage you to be extra hospitable in the coming weeks as we welcome visitors to our parish community for Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Plan to car pool when possible, try to avoid several cars from the same residence, parking on the grass along the perimeter assists us in accommodating those wishing to come and pray with us. A smile, a welcoming gesture, a word of encouragement to sing along---pray along makes all the difference. Remember someone may be in your seat! Let’s make them feel welcome too. You are the greatest asset of our parish community.

In the words of the great Apostle Paul, “You are the Ambassadors for Christ to the world.”

A SIGN of SPRING! It’s early April, the daffodils are up and the birds are singing. Surely it’s a sign of spring!

With that in mind, let’s think of spring and the garden.

On Wednesday, April 10, Patrice McCoy, a Master Gardener of Monmouth County for twenty years, and a resident of Freehold, will present an enjoyable and informative program entitled: ‘Pollinators are Not Just Bees’ and ‘Butterflies’ too!

Patrice has worked at the local Environmental Center for the past 9 years. She considers conservation a priority and a great way to get in touch with nature. Her own backyard is a ‘Certified Pollinator and Butterfly Habitat’.

Butterflies and pollinators are easy to watch and easy to identify.

There are flowers that predominately attract hummingbirds, swallowtail butterflies and some moths, and others attract numerous bee species, and still others will attract butterflies, moths and even flies and beetles.

A butterfly garden can be any size, from a window box, planter pots on a deck, landscaped yard to a wild, untended area on your lot.

Whether one is an avid gardener or an occasional one, with the right plants you may be pleasantly surprised at the guests that may come for a visit.

At each meeting, our generous members have been making donations to worthy causes. This month, we are requesting washcloths, hand towels & bath towels (need not be new, but in good condition) for the therapy horses at SPUR - who presented a wonderful program in February. Thank you in advance for your kindness.

So join us at the next Martha Mary Guild meeting, in Madonna Hall, Wednesday, April 10. Come to the Spiritual Center Chapel in Madonna Hall at 11:30 a.m. for the Rosary. Lunch will be at noon (BYOL), with refreshments provided by gracious Guild members and the program will begin around 12:30. ALL are welcome.

These photos were taken at our last meeting when Sister Debbie from the Collier School came to give us a Mini Lenten Retreat . We received a lot of positive feedback. Guests and parishioners donated books for the children at the school !

Saint Mary Parish Sewing Circle will meet on April 9 and 23 in room 11 at 1 pm as usual. We’ll continue to work on quilts & gowns.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW: Most projects are simple sew. No sewing experience, no worries, we will teach you!
