Divine Mercy Sunday Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, the Octave Day of Easter.

It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, and is associated with special promises from Jesus and indulgences issued by the Church.

The devotion was actively promoted by Pope Saint John Paul II. On April 30, 2000, Sister Faustina was canonized and the Sunday after Easter was declared as Divine Mercy Sunday.

In the years since, the devotion has grown, with many Catholics reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet as part of their prayers, especially during adoration or in preparation for or after the sacrament of penance and reconciliation.

A growing number of churches hold special services on this day. Votive Masses, penance and reconciliation services, Eucharistic adoration, concerts, liturgy of the hours with the people, etc.

A Plenary Indulgence may also be obtained by:  Going to confession, attending Mass and partaking in Holy Communion, to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, while:  In any church or chapel take part in the prayers and devotions in honor of the Divine Mercy.

In the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, say an Our Father and Creed. ...in both cases, adding a devout prayer to the Merciful Lord.

2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting.

Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and sacraments must be received by the office when registering in our program for the first time.

Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class Offered in January 2021 at enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning of aSaint Studentsthe who Parish do not have copy ofMary their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.

Fall RE Registration Grades 1-8 started April 1 Religious Education Registration will need a My Own Church (MOC) portal login to register. www.stmaryscoltsneck.org All families seeking Religious Education must be registered parishioners and have a My Own Church (MOC) portal login to be able to register for any of The Parish of Saint Mary Religious Education offerings. The process to create a MOC portal login and receive a temporary password can take a few days. This interface is not mobile device friendly and has been known to have emails blocked by several of the email providers.

PLEASE give yourself time to complete the process BEFORE Fall RE Registration Opens.

Fall Registration ends June 1, 2021 at 12 noon. An Early Registration Discount of $50/ child ends May 2, 2021 at 12 noon. (Full process including payment must be completed by 12 noon May 2nd to qualify for the discount) Registrants after close date ( June 1) will be subject to availability and a late fee of $50/child. Re-Registrations (returning Religious Education Students) will not be accepted after July 15  Grades 1 & 2: Two year First Penance & Reconciliation and First Eucharist Preparation.  In-person on Tuesdays either 4:30-5:40 pm or 5:50 -7:00 pm  Grades 3 - 6: Weekly Google Classroom Live Stream - selection of (Tues. 4:30 pm or Wed. 6 pm)

5th - 8th Grade: Zoom Youth Retreat Friday, April 16, 6-9 pm

The Diocese of Greensburg, PA will be holding a retreat for youth in grades 5-8 on Friday, April 16, 2021.

The retreat will be virtual over Zoom and led by the YoungLife Catholic Leaders and we would love for our young people to join us. All are welcome!

This is not a Confirmation retreat, but a time to bring younger students together to join in prayer, hear talks, share with each other, and have fun.

This will be a wonderful evening. There is no cost for the evening.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter and the Eighth Day of the Easter Octave. More recently this Sunday has come to be known as Divine Mercy Sunday for those who have a devotion to Saint Faustina and the revelation of Jesus made known to her. The remarkable thing about belief is that it always has room for unbelief.

Like mystery itself, belief is not something we have and that is it. There is always room to grow in our belief just as there is always room for our unbelief.

We call Thomas “doubting Thomas” and so he was.

Truth be told, so are all of us. There come times in our lives when we are simply overcome by emptiness and absence---perhaps the death of a loved one, the painful illness of a small child, or loss of a job. At these times doubt or unbelief are natural. This does not mean we have lost our faith, it means that doubt or unbelief can be metaphors for dying. Like Thomas, when we come to profound belief we know as rising. What moves us from unbelief to belief?

Also like Thomas, encounter with the Risen Christ.

In our times of doubt or unbelief we need to keep our eyes focused on the Risen One and, in due time, we know the Lord is with us inviting us to belief.

Many thanks to all those scores and scores who helped to prepare our worship for the Triduum and Solemnity of Easter. Preparing our parish facilities and our community is not an easy responsibility.

Those (more than 100) who helped with the Spring clean up; those who helped with arranging flowers and plants; those who helped with set up and cleaning; those who prepared the sacristy and the sacred vessels/vestments; those who served in various liturgical and support roles; those who shared their sewing talent…the quiet stewardship of many enable us to offer our very best. We had encouraging attendance throughout the Triduum. It was edifying to see so many people gathering for worship each day. What a wonderfully prayerful experience for us on Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil as we celebrated the Liturgy. The Good Friday Service and the Way of the Cross call us back as we

reflect on Christ’s suffering for our salvation. Your stewardship enables our parish to continue to grow as well as making great things happen in our midst.

There are some personnel changes to be announced.

Catherine Love and Andrea Melchiorri will be leaving our parish support staff to pursue other opportunities. Andrea has been with us a short time and we are grateful for her positive presence and her efficiency in helping us to strengthen our Faith Formation and Religious Education opportunities.

Catherine has been a part of our support staff for 10 years or so with varying responsibilities. Notably she has been responsible for the development of our communications plan: weekly bulletin/e-blast, website, calendar/facilities scheduling, data base, and mailings. Catherine has devoted significant time and energy toward advancing our mission. Please join me in thanking both Catherine and Andrea for their contributions in serving our parish community.

I recently learned that 11 April is the anniversary of priestly ordination of Father Gene. This year marks the 25th Anniversary. Please extend a warm and prayerful greeting to him when you see him here on campus. Ad multos annos Father Gene! Thank you for sharing your priestly service with the Parish of Saint Mary and our Co-hort 13 parishes.

If you have not made your gift to the Church for the Solemnity of Easter, please do so as soon as possible.

A big THANK YOU to the 90+ volunteers who helped us with our Spring Grounds Clean‐up!!

For 4 hours we raked leaves, picked up brush and twigs, set up Sta ons of the Cross, set up umbrellas in courtyard and piled up firewood. All of this would have not been possible with all your help. Many hands make light work!

Please be mindful of the upcoming volunteering opportuni es for service hours. We will also have a Fall Clean‐up in November/December, date s ll to be announced. Hope to see you all again by then!
