onprofit charitable organizations highlight all that is good in America today. According to the National Council of Nonprofits, Charitable organizations provide a way for people to work together for a common good, a place where shared hopes and beliefs are transformed into action, and an atmosphere to shape our boldest dreams, highest ideals, and noblest causes.

Everyone benefits from the work of nonprofits in one way or another. Nonprofit organizations strengthen communities by providing the educational, health, and social services that citizens need and the government cannot fully provide.

There is a good chance that you have attended service at a house of worship, learned to swim at the YMCA, developed life skills through Girl Scouts or Little League, or enjoyed a family vacation at the zoo, all thanks to the work of nonprofit organizations.

Charitable nonprofits feed, heal, shelter, educate, inspire, enlighten, and nurture people of every age, race, religion, gender, and socioeconomic status.

They foster community engagement, promote leadership, drive economic growth, and strengthen the fabric of our communities every single day.

However, operating a nonprofit isn’t easy. A nonprofit’s ability to secure sustainable long-term funding providing generational stability is a challenge. Nonprofit organizations can only fulfill their missions when they have dedicated and passionate people who give their time, talents, and treasures. They count on legacy bequests to carry out their missions of creating more equitable and healthy communities.

Quite simply, supporting a nonprofit organization is a beneficial way to strengthen our community, share our blessings and help our neighbors who are

in need. It provides a way for donors to leave behind more than just “things” when they pass. It allows a way for donors to communicate their values and beliefs to their heirs, while leaving them with a community improved by philanthropy.

Roughly, 80% of dollars contributed to nonprofits come from individual donors or their estates. [1] By donating to charity in the form of a charitable bequest in a Will, it alleviates this risk of needing the money for your own health needs, since upon the death of the donor, the funds would no longer be needed by him or her.

With this guide you will find wonderful local organizations that are impacting Northeast Indiana.

By adding a bequest to one, or several of them, you can participate in the Write a Will event at no cost to you.

Nonprofits are all around us and touch millions of lives each day thanks to the generous and selfless gifts provided by those invested in the community and proud to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Estate Planning – Do’s and Don’ts

Y

An attorney, financial advisor/accountant, or trust administrator are professionals who can help you put together an estate plan that reflects your unique needs and goals, helping you to sort through difficult questions, avoid common mistakes, and plan your estate with confidence and peace of mind.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when putting together an estate plan: ● DON’T WRITE YOUR OWN WILL – Estate planning is too complicated to do it yourself, and the laws that govern it vary from state to state. So don’t rely on a generic form you found online when there are professionals who can customize a plan for you. All too often, small mistakes made by do-it-yourselfers can lead to an invalid Will and family members spending thousands of dollars fighting over your estate. ● DON’T PROCRASTINATE – Delays only hurt the ones you love. The time to plan your estate is now, even if you’re not sure who gets what or who you want to be in charge. An estate plan that meets 80% of your goals is better than no plan at all.

ou’ve built a good life for yourself and, naturally, you want to pass it on. But just as it takes hard work and planning to acquire wealth, it also takes a well thought-out estate plan to preserve those assets for future generations.

● DON’T FORGET TO UPDATE BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS – It’s a good idea to check your beneficiary designations periodically to make sure they’re current. Major assets could easily go to the wrong person if you’ve recently had a major life change. In a worst-case scenario, these assets could even end up in probate and subject to the claims of creditors. ● DO CONSULT A FINANCIAL ADVISOR – If you own valuable assets, the best way to protect them (and minimize your tax burden) is through a properly executed estate plan. ● DO FUND YOUR REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST – As soon as possible after your trust agreement is signed, fund it. Otherwise, the plan won’t work if you become disabled, and your assets will end up in probate when you die.

How to prepare for meeting with your “Write a Will” attorney

Y

our meeting with your attorney at any of the partner “Write a Will” sites will be scheduled for approximately 15 to 30 minutes. For best use of your appointment, complete the form for Will Preparation (a copy is available on page 6).

Bring it with you to your appointment. The information your attorney will need to complete your Will includes: • Your marital status and, if married, the name of your spouse; also, is your spouse a U.S. citizen? Do you have a prenuptial agreement?

• Names and birthdates of all your children whether they will inherit or not • Name and address of the charitable organization(s) you name in your Will • Names of other persons who will benefit from your Will, and their relationship to you • A general list of your assets and how those assets are titled; for example, is your house or bank account in your name only, or are there other owners? If you have an IRA or retirement account, who are your beneficiaries?

• You can leave your beneficiaries a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. You can also make bequests of specific items, such as jewelry or furniture. Your attorney will discuss each of these options.

At the end of your appointment, your attorney will explain what to expect and when your document(s) will be ready to sign. You should follow-up with your attorney. CGPNI is not involved in the follow-up.

Remember, your Will will be prepared at no charge if you name at least one charity to receive a gift from your Will when you die. If you do not name a charity in your Will, you must be prepared to pay the cost of the

Will. The attorney will discuss this with you.

You may also ask your attorney to prepare other documents for you in addition to a Will.

Please be aware the attorney has the right to charge a fee for the additional work.

s we navigate through today’s world, it is sometimes difficult to know where to place our energy and resources to contribute to the collective healing that we desire and need. At Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County, our mission is joining hands together and building bridges to provide for the needs of the community.

What does building bridges look like in each of our ministries? For the Neighborhood Food Network, it is providing an emergency supply of food to a father for his family during a time of underemployment, a grandmother caring for her young grandchildren, or a homeless young adult looking for their next meal. For A Baby’s Closet, it is helping a family in need of diapers and essential baby items, and providing the tools needed to care for a baby through encouraging an incentive-based program by following physician-based care and comprehensive care for mom and baby. For the Landing, it is providing a safe place for teens to experience freedom, healing, and wholeness with other teens. For Rising Stars, it is connecting local congregations with schools to provide for their tangible needs. For Military Families, it may be utility assistance when a parent is deployed. For The Mission House, it’s making space for creativity and voice in the service of healing.

We believe that acts of love, both small and large, add up to something powerful. In this time of hardship for so many in the world what does “love in action” look like for you today? hen you hear the word “estate” you may think of a large home on a rambling piece of land. You may also think that only wealthy people have an estate. A person’s collection of accumulated assets such as real estate, cars and cash makes up an estate.

Setting up a formal estate plan allows for assets to be transferred per your wishes.

Cancer Services encourages everyone to be prepared by participating in the 2021 Write a Will event. Cory Swagger, J.D., a native of Leo, set up his practice in Auburn after receiving a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Indiana University. Cory will offer his expertise from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Cancer Services, 6316 Mutual Drive. He will meet with you one-onone and create a simple Will at no cost. The only requirement is that you include a charitable gift in your Will.

A Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana donor recently shared, “Having a Will is important to me to let my family know how I would like my property managed at my death. I know that it will ease their burden and decision making. I also appreciate that by participating in Write a Will I can ensure that I can pay it forward through my bequest.”

arilyn Salon was a close friend of the food bank, and a strong advocate for hunger relief causes. We were filled with sadness at her passing this past December, and her wit and vibrant spirit will be sorely missed.

Marilyn and Joel’s important contributions to causes that positively impact lives everywhere should be remembered for years to come, even in their absence. The Marilyn and Joel Salon Endowment was created to provide sustainable benefit to food insecure families in perpetuity.

Marilyn and Joel’s children, Scott, Joel, and Jeffrey, have been instrumental in the creation of the endowment and shared the following about their family’s legacy of support: “Food insecurity affects not only the quality of life, but it also threatens survival. Mitigating food insecurity is foundational in caring for our fellow humans. Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana fulfills this mission efficiently and effectively with compassion and caring. It receives the highest rating achievable for a charitable organization from both Charity Navigator and Guide Star.

Marilyn and Joel Salon lived during the great depression, where they learned the devastating effects of hunger. The Kenny Carbaugh Family

here are so many memories that families have of each other and especially of loved ones: Loved ones who have been called to their heavenly home. Loved ones who are missed and yet remembered for what they meant to a family—what they brought to the family—and what they shared in their communities.

Kenneth F. Carbaugh III is one such family member. He was only 62 when he was called Home and yet his family did not forget what he meant to them. Kenny was named after his father who had gone Home early leaving his wife, Ferne, and sons Paul and Mark and daughter Cheryl, along with Kenny.

Kenny had shared that he was going to leave part of his estate to Concordia Lutheran High School (CLHS). The family thought that had happened. However, when they called to see how the Kenny Carbaugh Endowed Scholarship was doing, they learned that it had not been set up. Why? Kenny’s estate was a second-to-die and so his wife, Bobbi, was the first beneficiary. The family learned this and mom, Ferne, who suggested that perhaps it was time for the family to put something in place.

They contacted Pastor John Schoedel, Chief Development Officer of CLHS and the Concordia Educational Foundation.

Son, Mark, is the one who had called Pastor Schoedel and found out there was no Carbaugh Endowment.

After working with his mom and brother and sister, they agreed to come to Fort Wayne. Sister, Cheryl, lives in New Hampshire so working out a date for the two brothers, sister and mom took some work. The meeting was set and they came together at CLHS. After discussion and sharing who Kenny was and what he meant to the family and to his community, the family created the Kenneth F. Carbaugh III Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

Funded that day, it will provide financial aid to families who want their children to come to the high school they all attended and remembered for its Christ-centered focus and its excellent academic and extra-curricular programs.

Annual gifts and estate gifts will continue to grow the endowment.

Approximately 65% of Americans do not have a Last Will and Testament. This is especially astounding since state and federal laws provide some significant incentives for preparing one.

ell, it is about time! After receiving an announcement from CTSFW for “Write a Will Week” in 2020, I overcame my longstanding procrastination when Jeanette and I registered and decided to meet with an attorney. In doing so, we discovered how easy it was to work Rev. Dennis and Jeanette McFadden through the various legal issues, and simply sign and return them a few weeks later. In place of the substantial cost typical of this service, we knew that wellqualified local attorneys were providing their expertise at no cost to us!

My wife had been urging me to make an appointment to draft a will for years. Yes, I knew all of the arguments. A will indicates how you would like your assets disbursed after your death. A will includes provisions for how you would like to support your church and other charities. A will deals with the nettlesome concerns of powers of attorney and end of life issues, which often fuel conflicts among your family members.

Further, a will provides you the opportunity to select who will execute or carry out your wishes. Finally, it allows you the opportunity to maximize the assets you pass on to your children, while minimizing tax implications for them.

The greatest satisfaction in establishing our will, however, was that it gave us the legal ability to reflect our deepest values and express them to the ones we love. We all live knowing that death will not miss its appointment, whether we are ready or not. A will bears witness, therefore, to the truth of these words: “you do not know what tomorrow will bring …

For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes” (James 4:14). I always believed that there is joy in giving, but I had no idea how relieving and satisfying it would be to know that our five children would be provided for, as well as our congregation, national church body, and CTSFW. “Write a Will Week” does not merely apply to those with great assets. We are led by a common goal to care for “the least of these brothers and sisters” as Christ instructs in the Gospel of Matthew. We do this by serving as His eyes, ears, hands, and heart, looking beyond our patients’ issues and circumstances—to bring hope, comfort, and high-quality healthcare to thousands of people each year.

As the number of people needing our services increases, the need for resources increases as well. We serve lowincome adults who do not have insurance. Most of our patients work but are not offered group insurance through their employer and cannot afford a plan through the Marketplace. Matthew 25 is a place that encourages health and wellness and strives to help our patients live life to the fullest. We want our service to be a powerful witness of God’s love as our patient population is comprised of some of the most vulnerable in the community.

If the pandemic has illustrated anything, it is how closely linked the health of all people are within a community. It has also underscored the fact that none of us are promised tomorrow.
