Dr. Crowley was born and raised in the small rural town of Weiser, Idaho, graduated from high school and went to Idaho State University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy in 1972. He returned to his home town and practiced community pharmacy with his dad in their family pharmacy and he also worked as the hospital pharmacist at the local hospital. He was accepted to medical school at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara and received an MD degree in 1979. Dr. Crowley served a fifth Pathway Program, which is an extra academic year, in lieu of Social Service in Mexico and to satisfy the requirements for licensure in the United States.

KELSEY SALEEN BAILEY

KNOX, IN - Kelsey Saleen “Bug” Bailey, 31, died Friday, May 1, 2026 in La Porte, Indiana. She was born November 3, 1994 in La Porte, to Jerry Pullins and Denise (Bailey) Gaines.

Kelsey loved the summer time, being in the pool, at the beach or anywhere in the sunshine, watching TikTok videos. She was the light of her family’s world.

She is survived by her mother, Denise (Jeff) Gaines of Knox, one brother, Kody Combs of Knox and grandparents: Lynn and Elson Barden of Walkerton, Indiana and Joe Pullins of Rensselaer, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her father, Jerry and grandparents, James E. and Lou Bailey.

Services were held Saturday, May 9, at Braman & Bailey Funeral Home with Matt Bailey officiating. Memorials may be made to the family.

DUANE BARNETT JR.

KNOX, IN - Duane Barnett Jr., 43, died Monday, May 4, 2026 in Noblesville, Indiana. He was born April 20, 1983 in Knox, Indiana to Duane Barnett and Deborah Scott.

He is survived by his mother and step father, Deborah (Paul Combs) Scott of North Judson, Indiana, one sister, Donna Marie (Kevin Reed) Joseph of North Judson and his grandmother, May Joseph of Knox. He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Sr. and grandparents: John Scott and Carolyn Smith.

Services were held Monday, May 11 at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel with Rev. Daniel Hamilton officiating. Burial was in the Oak Park Cemetery in Knox.

Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

WILLIAM LEE HILT

NORTH JUDSON, IN - William Lee “Bill” Hilt, 90, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026. He was born May 31,1935 in Winamac, Indiana to the late Floyd and Emma (Green) Hilt. On June 15, 1963, he married Vi Goold. Bill started his career with the Starke County Street Department, Starke County Co-Op in Hamlet, Rockwell International and when they closed, he bought his first semi-truck and became an independent steel hauler. After retirement, he was manager of Knox Super Wash and drove for Williams Broken Arrow Asphalt. He was also Center Township Precinct Committeeman for many years. He loved fishing, trapping, hunting, playing bunco and card games. He is survived by his wife, Vi, one daughter, Darla (Todd) Ambrose of North Judson, four grandchildren, four great grandsons and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Betty, Marty Jane and Etta Belle. Services were held Monday, May 11 at M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Hamlet, Indiana.

CAREY DANIELLE STONE

FORT WAYNE, IN - FORMERLY OF KNOX, IN - Carey Danielle Stone, 47, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was born September 1, 1978 in Knox, Indiana to the late Terry Lee and Deborah Ann (Binkley) Slone.

Carey enjoyed doing crafts, listening to music, reading, watching horror movies and spending time with her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Kianna (Skip) Slone of Fort Wayne, one sister, Melissa Slone and one brother, Terry “Bub” (Sarah) Slone, both of Knox.

Friends will be received from 1-2pm on Thursday, May 14 at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel. Graveside services will be held at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Knox with Rev. Arnold Keaton officiating. Memorials may be made to the funeral home.

MICHELLE L. DeGARD

KNOX, IN - FORMERLY OF GARY, IN - Michelle L. DeGard, 65, died Friday, May 8, 2026 at her home. She was born January 18, 1961 in Hammond, Indiana to Earl and Jana Gray. On June 5, 1979, she married Donald DeGard.

Michelle loved spending time gardening, shopping, going to the casino, fishing, going out to dinner and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Donald, one son, Donald DeGard (Misty) Starkey of Hamlet, Indiana, one grandson and one sister, Kim Humphrey of Colorado.

Visitation from 11am-1pm CT on Saturday, May 16, with funeral services beginning at 1pm at M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Fletcher Cemetery in Hamlet.

LLOYD DARIUS CARTER

LAKE STATION, IN - Lloyd Darius Carter, 81, died Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at his home. He was born January 2, 1945 in Jamestown, Tennessee to the late Jesse and Etta (Hicks) Carter. In 1982, he married Laurie Bergman.

Lloyd was a veteran of the US Navy, having served during the Vietnam War. He spent his career driving over the road and later locally. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local #142. Being a Papa was his greatest joy.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie, four sons: Eric Carter, David Carter, Steven (Leah) Price and Daniel (Brianna) Carter, two daughters: Kimberly Blankenship and Jaime Purnot, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and siblings: Buddy (Barbara) Carter, Sonny Carter, Boyd Carter and Jo Copley. He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Wenzel and two brothers: Hubert and Herbert Carter.

Graveside services will be held at 2pm EDT on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at the Buck Cemetery in Thornhope, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Dementia Society of America. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac, Indiana.

BONNIE L. HANAWALT

WINAMAC, IN - Bonnie L. Hanawalt, 93, died at 5:05pm on Monday, May 4, 2026 at Parkview Haven Healthcare in Francesville, Indiana. She was born November 12, 1932 in Winamac to the late Carson and Laura (Coin) Umphrey. Bonnie was a 1950 graduate of Pulaski High School. She was retired from the Pulaski County Farm Service Agency after 30 years. She was a former member of the Pulaski Presbyterian Church and a 50 year member of the Royal Center Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling and going on cruises.

Graveside services will be at 1pm on Wednesday, May 13 at the Winamac Cemetery (Southlawn addition) with Pastor Ed Clark officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Winamac Fire Department.

JOSEPH WILLIAM DOWNS

FORT WAYNE, IN - FORMERLY OF KNOX, IN - Joseph “Joe” William Downs, 79, died Saturday, May 9, 2026 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born September 25, 1946 in Rensselaer, Indiana to the late Walter John and Lucille (Walters) Downs.

Joe was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion of Fort Wayne. He attended St. Elizabeth Seton in Fort Wayne. He was a retired pharmacist and enjoyed running, skiing, golf, bowling, family baseball games, tending his flowers, working in his yard and spending time with his family.

He is survived by two sons: Jason (Michelle) Downs of Knox, Indiana and Casey Downs of Fort Wayne, one daughter, Suzanne Kanschat of Plymouth, Indiana, four grandchildren, one brother, Jack (Louise) Downs of Kokomo, Indiana and two sisters: Donna Powers of Middlebury, Indiana and Linda Herod of Valparaiso, Indiana. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Downs.

Friends will be received from 11am till time of service at 1pm on Saturday, May 23, at the Braman & Son Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or Doctor’s Without Borders.

Jack E. Dusek, Jr.

9/4/1951-4/4/2026

Jack E. Dusek, Jr., 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family members on April 4, 2026. Jack was a “junior” to his father, Jack E. Dusek, Sr. and was the oldest of the six children of Jack, Sr. and his dear wife, Shirley Jean Mow Dusek.

Jack is survived by his “main squeeze” and later wife of nearly wonderful 40 years, America (“Amy”) McAlpinDusek, and his younger siblings: brother James Christopher (“Chris”) Dusek, sister Terri Elaine (Clayton) Shepard, sister Jean Marie (David) Buczek, brother Scott Eric (Charlotte) Dusek and sister, Rebecca Helen Dusek and partner, Robert Wheeler, and many, many special and beloved nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews who were all like his own dear children. Jack was a protective and bossy big brother to his siblings and a fun-loving, generous “Uncle Jack” to his nieces, nephews and many precious other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and other dear and special relatives and friends.

Jack was born in LaPorte, Indiana and grew up in North Judson, Indiana, once an important railroad town, where he learned to love trainspotting, especially trains running on the tracks right across the street from his family home. He graduated from North Judson San Pierre High School in 1969 and from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He then graduated from the Methodist Hospital of Gary’s School of Medical Technology, after which he received his B.S. degree in Allied Health Sciences from IU. Thereafter, he attained his registration as a Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP). He later earned a B.A. in Accounting from Indiana University Northwest, becoming an expert at preparing his own and other family members’ tax returns.

Jack went on to have a successful career of 42 years as an MT, including having served as an Assistant Clinical Laboratory Manager during that time. Jack was employed as an MT at several hospitals in Northwest Indiana and Chicago, retiring in 2018 from Ingalls Memorial Hospital, currently the University of Chicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial in Harvey, Illinois. He remained friends with many of his great co-workers there and enjoyed holidays and other good times with them over the years.

Jack was a knowledgeable and capable muscle car buff and auto mechanic, having bought and worked on both his first car, a red 1962 Chevy II, in his teens and later on restoring an exact replica of that car he bought as a “project car”. He attended many Power Tour events hosted by Hot Rod Magazine and other car shows across the country over many years with his best and long-time friend, Larry Pixey. Jack was a life-long model train hobbyist and served as Treasurer of Ridge Model Rail Roaders in Griffith, Indiana for several years. He was also a long-time supporter of the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum located in North Judson. He spent lots of good times chasing trains, and enjoying train shows and swap meets with his nephew and “super train buff” pal, Kaiden Roberts.

Also, a knowledgeable history buff, Jack was an enthusiastic Civil War reenactor with the 9th Regiment Infantry Indiana Volunteers, Company E (the “9th Indiana”) group, honoring an actual federal unit that fought during the Civil War. He also served as Treasurer, then President, of the 9th Indiana and spent many happy days at Civil War reenactments held at or near actual Civil War battlegrounds around the country. He enjoyed many happy times during reenactments marching into “battle” with his comrades during the day and then relaxing around the campfire with them in the evening. Jack became an Indiana Master Naturalist in 2023, having lots of good times visiting parks and other natural areas including many throughout the Midwest and Florida. After his retirement, Jack trained and was sworn in by the Lake County Superior Court as a volunteer guardian with the Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) Program of Franciscan Health in Dyer, Indiana. In that Program, Jack served as the volunteer guardian for and friend of an elderly gentleman who had no family or friends to assist him in the final year of his life.

Jack and Amy enjoyed traveling and were blessed to be able to visit multiple countries and places including Alaska and others in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, various places in the Caribbean, and wildlife safaris in Kenya and Tanzania over their 51 years together.

Jack’s fun-loving and generous spirit will be remembered and sorely missed by many wonderful, beloved family and friends. A memorial service for Jack will be scheduled at a later date.
