Town of North Judson Seeking Candidates to Fill Seat on Parks & Recreation Board

According to Town Code:

§ 32.036 (A) A Park and Recreation Board shall be composed of four members appointed by the Town Council on the basis of his, her, or their interest in and knowledge of parks and recreation. (B) No more than two members shall be on the same political party. (Prior Code, § 2-221) (Ord. 86-3, passed 5-21-1986)

§ 32.040 AUTHORITY OF BOARD. The Park and Recreation Board shall have the power to perform all acts necessary to acquire and develop sites and facilities and to conduct such programs as are generally understood to be park and recreation functions. In addition, the Park and Recreation Board shall have all the powers and duties available under the Indiana Code.

The Town Council is seeking candidates to fill a vacancy on the Park & Recreation Board. Vacant seat now in second of four-year term ending January 2028. Candidate must be a resident of the Town of North Judson. Attendance expected at monthly meetings throughout the year and to be involved in Park & Recreation budgets, initiatives, and planned and ongoing projects.

LARRY JORDAN

La PORTE, IN - Larry “Shorty” Jordan, 65, died Wednesday, March 5, 2025 in La Porte, Indiana. He was born April 12, 1959 in Royalton, Kentucky.

Shorty was loved by many and was always available to support and assist anyone in need. He enjoyed family gatherings, music, singing and playing his guitar with his son. He loved the outdoors fishing, boating and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Vicky, one son, Clinton (Jenn) Jordan of North Judson, Indiana, two daughters: Misty Miller of Lafayette, Indiana and Amanda Rachowicz of La Porte, thirteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren and six siblings: Henrietta Bradley, Carl Michael Jordan, Marsha “Tiny” Elkins, Sandra Rowe, Timothy Jordan and Gary Jordan, all of Indiana. He was preceded in death by one son, Billy Jordan and his parents, Henry and Roma “Lou” Jordan.

A gathering of family and friends was held Sunday, March 9 at the O’Donnell Funeral Home.

Arrangements were made by O’Donnell Funeral Home, Inc. in North Judson.

WILLIAM EUGENE UNRUH

NORTH JUDSON, IN - William Eugene Unruh, 73, died Saturday, March 8, 2025 in North Judson, Indiana. He was born August 5, 1951 in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Frank and Alene (Shoemaker) Unruh. On July 21, 1971 in Plymouth, Indiana, he married Linda Guyse. She died February 6, 2021. William was a member of the Indiana National Guard. He enjoyed fishing, camping, old cars and spending time with his family. He had worked as a truck driver.

He is survived by one son, William “Billy” (Bridgett) Unruh of North Judson, one daughter, Tina LeMarr of North Judson, five grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two siblings: John Unruh of Bourbon, Indiana and Sandy Ankney of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by five siblings: Jim, Frank and Harold Unruh, Betty Jo Gibson and Alice Shepherd.

Services were held Thursday, March 13 at Braman & Bailey Funeral Home. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery in North Judson.

Arrangements were made by Braman & Bailey Funeral Home in North Judson.

PATRICIA ANN YELKICH

RENSSELAER, IN - FORMERLY OF EAST GARY, IN AND WANATAH, IN - Patricia Ann “Pat” Yelkich, 77, died Saturday, March 8, 2025 at the Rensselaer Care Center in Rensselaer, Indiana. She was born March 28, 1947 in Oakland, Illinois to the late Alfred John and Nina Caroline (Dodson) Dunn, Sr. On April 24, 1963, in Lake Station, Indiana, she married John Michael Yelkich. He died November 10, 2010.

Pat attended River Forest High School. She earned her GED from the Valparaiso Adult Learning Center and then studied Secretarial Accounting at Sawyer College of Business. She enjoyed arts and crafts and loved animals. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by two sons: John Michael (Katherine) Yelkich, Jr. of Lowell, Indiana and Joe Yelkich of Francesville, Indiana and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Charlotte Wojcik and Clara Goodpasture and four brothers: Alfred John “Sonny” Dunn, Jr., Ronald James “Ronnie” Dunn, Sr., Robert “Bobby” Dunn and Edward Charles “Eddie” Dunn.

Private burial will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rensselaer Care Center.

Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville.

MARILYN S. DRANG

ORA, IN - Marilyn S. Drang, 77, died Monday, March 10, 2025. She was born April 15, 1947, in Bass Station, Indiana, to the late Ernie and Florence (May) Thompson.

Marilyn’s life work was education, having achieved a Master’s Degree, she went on to spend her career as a school teacher, teaching at Knox Middle School, Knox, Indiana OregonDavis Junior High in Hamlet, Indiana and Lincoln Junior High in Plymouth, Indiana. She had many hobbies including: reading the Bible, bird watching, playing games with family and friends and she loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Richard, her children: Frank Drang of Warsaw, Indiana, Rich Drang Jr. of Rome City, Indiana and Jenny Drang of Kokomo, Indiana, three grandchildren, three sisters: Bonnie Planck of Naples, Florida, Lorretta Stone of Gosport, Indiana and Angie Garrison of Weckiwachee, Florida and one brother, Benjamin Thompson of Plymouth, Indiana. She was preceded in death by siblings: Pauline Mendenhall, Mary Osborne, Tom Thompson and Shirley Williams.

Services were held Saturday, March 15, at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Burial was in the Alexander Heinemann Cemetery in Ora. Memorial contributions may be made by purchasing reading books in her memory for Jenny Drang’s first grade class at Taylor Elementary School.

Arrangements were made by M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox.

JERRY TOLSON

KNOX, IN - Jerry Tolson, 82, died Saturday, March 8, 2025 in Knox, Indiana. He was born February 16, 1943, in Hamlet, Indiana to the late Roy and Ethel (Mullins) Tolson. On May 4, 1963, at Ellsworth Air Force Base, he married Karen Milam.

Jerry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He enjoyed singing, karaoke and playing guitar. He had worked as a car salesman.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, two sons: Scott Tolson and Mike Tolson, both of Knox, one daughter, Cindy (Don) Marquardt of Angola, Indiana, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Truman and Henry Tolson and five sisters: Irene Smith, Betty Wilcox, Emma Jean Arman, Ida Craft and Frankie Smith.

Services were held Friday, March 14, at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Pinson officiating. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

PAUL ALFRED HOFFMAN

EDMOND, OK - FORMERLY OF WINAMAC, IN - Paul Alfred Hoffman, 84, died Monday, February 24, 2025 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born June 21, 1940 and grew up in Thornhope, Indiana. On October 27, 1990 in Winamac, Indiana he married Shirley Ann (Busch) Scheffer. She died September 18, 2019.

Paul earned an honorary diploma from Winamac High School. He was retired from Whallon Machinery in Royal Center, Indiana where he had worked for 30 years as a self-taught draftsman/engineer. He was a longtime member of the Winamac VFW Post #1728 Auxiliary. He enjoyed traveling with Shirley and spending time with his family. He was an avid Oklahoma City Thunder fan.

He is survived by three daughters: Kim Carpenter of Purcell, Oklahoma, Angie (Jim) Kasbohm of El Reno, Oklahoma and Penny DeLorenzo of Winamac, two sons: Mark (Kelly) Hoffman of Edmond and Scott (Stephanie) Hoffman of Logansport, Indiana, two step daughters: Karen (Labon) Gourley of Winamac and Cindy (Dale) Shepard of Grovertown, Indiana, fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one sister, Martha Kopka and four brothers: Larry, Terry, Rodger and Norman Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles Sherman Hoffman and Delilah Mae (Jones) Hoffman Campbell and siblings: Darlene Starr and Philip, Gary and Charles Hoffman. Graveside services will be held at 10am EDT on Saturday, April 5 at the Star City West Cemetery in Star City, Indiana with Dylan Johnson officiating, followed by a celebration of life beginning at 11am EDT at the Winamac VFW Post #1728. Memorial contributions may be made to the Winamac VFW Post #1728 Auxiliary.
