Bass Lake Festival 2026 Grand Marshal: Myles McLaughlin
Myles is the son of Josh and Suzann McLaughlin, lifelong residents of Starke County. Suzann is a native of Bass Lake, and her family has been an active part of the Bass Lake community for generations. His grandparents and great-grandparents owned and operated well-known local businesses, including Fingerhut Bakery and Bass Lake Grocery, formerly known as Buchta’s. Myles has two younger brothers, Mason (16) and Madden (14). Growing up on Bass Lake, the three boys developed a deep appreciation for lake life, family traditions, and the outdoors. One of our greatest blessings has been watching them enjoy everything Bass Lake has to offer. Whether fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, or simply spending time on the water with family and friends, Bass Lake has provided countless hours of fun and created memories that will last a lifetime.
Bass Lake Festival weekend has always been a special tradition for our family and something we look forward to every year. We have loved watching Myles, Mason, and Madden participate in the bike races, water volleyball tournaments, 5K events, and many other festival activities. These experiences helped shape Myles’ character, teaching him the values of hard work, sportsmanship, and community while fostering a deep appreciation for the place he proudly calls home. We are incredibly grateful and honored that Myles was selected to serve as the Grand Marshal of the 2026 Bass Lake Festival. This recognition means so much to our family because it comes from a community that has played such an important role in our lives for generations. It has been a very special year for Myles, filled with accomplishments both on and off the football field. While we are proud of his achievements as an athlete, we are even more proud of the kind, respectful, and hardworking young man he has become.
Being named Grand Marshal is a tremendous honor, and we are thankful to celebrate this special moment with the community that has supported and encouraged our family for so many years. Bass Lake will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are grateful for the friendships, memories, and traditions that make it such a wonderful place to call home.

JEFFREY A. HEIMS
WINAMAC, IN - Jeffrey A. Heims, 61, died at 1:42am on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at his home. He was born January 9, 1965 in Winamac to the late Donald Heims and Miriam Lloyd. On September 12, 1992 he married Rhonda DePoy. Jeff was a 1983 Winamac High School graduate and earned a Bachelor of Science in criminology and then graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1989. He was a retired Chief of Police in Winamac, serving the community for over 25 years as Jailer, Patrolman, Sergeant and then Chief. He was also the D.A.R.E. Officer for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office and had owned and operated McKinleyHeims Monuments Inc. and Heims Tree Service. Jeff enjoyed riding his Harley, hunting and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda, daughters: Nicole (Tyler) Katschke and Hallie Heims, four grandchildren and siblings: Dawn (Glenn) Bailey and Chad (Colleen) Winters.
Services were held Saturday, July 11 at Rans Funeral Homes & Crematory, Winamac Chapel. Burial was in the Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition). Memorials may be made to cops Cycling for Survivors.

SHERMAN WRIGHT
MEDARYVILLE, IN - Sherman Wright, 84, died Wednesday, May 27, 2026. He was born February 17, 1942 in DeMotte, Indiana to the late Willmer and Banty Bell (Luttrell) Wright. On December 21, 1991, he married Frances James. Sherman worked as a farmer. He loved garage sales, buying and selling miscellaneous stuff and playing his guitar and singing for the Lord.
He is survived by his children: Bonnie Fuller, P.J. Wright, Raleigh Wright and Michael Wright, his step children: Karen Davis, Mark McElroy, Rodney McElroy and Molly Butterbaugh, many grandchildren and one brother, Charles Wright. He was preceded by his wife, Frances and siblings: Albert “Buck” Wright, Pete Wright and Ruth Ann Cooper.
A celebration of life will be held at 11am on Sunday, July 26 at the Spirit of Faith Church in Medaryville.

MARYANN KWILIN
KNOX, IN - MaryAnn Kwilin, 90, died Saturday, July 4, 2026 at her home. She was born October 19, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Joseph and Mary (Gasienica) Janowicz.
MaryAnn was a devoted Christian. She was a private home health worker. She was an excellent seamstress, baker and cook and she enjoyed arts & crafts, taking care of her flowers and singing. She loved her family very much. She is survived by one son, Daniel Kwilin, three daughters: Kathy Kwilin Zink and Sandra Kwilin Furlong, all of Knox and Tammy (Bruce) Vogele of La Grange, Illinois, eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Patrick Furlong and one sister, Bernadine Murray.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 10 at the Oak Park Cemetery in Knox, with Rev. James Adcock officiating.
Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

NORTH JUDSON, IN - Connie S. Eckert, 69, died Thursday, July 9, 2026 at her home. She was born March 8, 1957 to the late Richard and Thelma (Trusty) Smith.
Connie had a passion for travel that became both her career and her calling. She owned her own agency for a time and then worked for a travel agency in South Bend, Indiana. She enjoyed helping people create memories through travel, cruises, baking, her dogs and life’s simple pleasures.
She is survived by her children: Phillip R. Eckert and Julie N. (Vil Tagua) Eckert, three grandchildren and siblings: Richard Smith Jr., Loretta Rowe, Judy Franscoviak and Sherry Deery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Eckert, siblings: Hattie Smith and Dewey Smith and her companion, Buddy Gardner.
A celebration of life will be held at 1pm EST on Monday, July 20, at Highland Cemetery in North Judson.

MARC PATRICK ROYCE
PORTAGE, IN - Marc Patrick Royce, 48, died unexpectedly at his home on July 2, 2026. He was born June 25, 1978 in Vaparaiso, Indiana to Patricia (Lemke) Esserman and Michael Royce.
Mark was a 1997 graduate of Portage High School and was a service technician for United Fast Food and Beverage. He was a loved socialite and group leader and was commonly nicknamed “Bulldog” and “Powder”. He loved his family very much.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia of Portage, siblings: Adam Royce of Hobart, Indiana, Megan Royce and Kaylee Esserman, both of Portage and step dad, Don Esserman of Winamac, Indiana.
