Obituaries JEFFERY HARNESS
KNOX, IN - Jeffery Harness, 75, died Monday, November 27, 2023, in WInamac, Indiana. He was born June 28, 1948, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Edwin and Lela (Cox) Harness. On September 23, 1972, he married Patricia Ayers. She died in 2019. Jeffery was a purple heart veteran of the US Army, having served in Vietnam. He was retired from Inland Steel, after 35 years. He was a member of the Knox VFW and the Hamlet American Legion in Hamlet, Indiana. He is survived by one brother, Jerry Harness of Ockawaha, Florida and one sister, Susan Fort of Knox. He was preceded in death by siblings: Vern, Lawrence, Merrill, Dick, Loretta Pozorski, Mila Young and Peggy Harness. Services were held Sunday, December 3, at the Hamlet United Methodist Church, with Pastor Deborah Miller officiating. Burial was in the Fletcher Cemetery in Hamlet. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

WINAMAC, IN - FORMERLY OF MEDARYVILLE, IN - Richard Earl “Rich” McIlvain, 75, died Friday, November 24, 2023, at his home. He was born May 16, 1948, in Logansport, Indiana, to the late Roy L. “Paw” and Dorothy R. “Nan” (Schultz) McIlvain, Sr. On November 19, 1999, in Crown Point, Indiana, he married Jan Renee Hansell. Rich was a 1966 graduate of Medaryville High School. He retired from Bethlehem Steel, where he had worked for over 30 years. He served on the Medaryville White Post Fire Department for over 20 years and was a member of the Winamac FOE #2580. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed floating the river, camping, racing of all kinds, motorcycle rides, playing pool, tinkering on antique cars,fixing and building things and he loved his family very much. He is survived by his wife, Jan, three sons: Richard E. “Rich” (Kay) McIlvain and Ronald E. “Ron” (Lori) McIlvain, both of Medaryville and Travis J. McIlvain of Winamac, three stepsons: Zach, Andy and Sam Norris, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two brothers: Roy L. (Barbara) McIlvain and Ronald A. (Shari) McIlvain, both of Medaryville. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Autumn D. McIlvain. Services were held Friday, December 1, at Frain Mortuary, with Pastor Tom Dewlin officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the family c/o Jan McIlvain. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

WINAMAC, IN - Shirley J. Hettinger, 87, died Thursday, November 23, 2023, at Hickory Creek @ Winamac in Winamac, Indiana. She was born December 4, 1935 in McClure, Ohio, to the late Rev. Arthur and Lera (Kinder) Wenner. On June 26, 1954, in Winamac, she married Paul E. Hettinger. Shirley was a current member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Winamac. Through the years, she was active in various area churches where she taught Bible School, played the piano, sang in the choir and led youth group. She enjoyed spreading the Gospel, attending tent revivals, cooking, baking, sewing, being a successfull Avon Representitive. She was a devoted volunteer at the Pulaski Health Care Center and Hickory Creek for many years. She loved animals and her family very much. She is survived by her husband, Paul, one daughter, Lera (Paul) Mayer and one son, Paul A. (Michelle) Hettinger, all of Winamac, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Mona shumaker and Meredith Dewitt. Private services were held at Frain Mortuary, with private burial in the Bell Cemeter Cemetery in Bell Center, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Pulaski Animal Center or

THE HONORABLE DOUGLAS LYNN GUTWEIN
CARY, NC - FORMERLY OF FRANCESVILLE, IN - The Honorable Douglas Lynn Gutwein, Indiana State Representative, Retired, 75, died Friday, December 1, 2023, after a year long battle with cancer. He was born April 4, 1948, in Francesville, Indiana, to the late Clarence and Jane (Snedeker) Gutwein. In 1979, in Georgetown, Kentucky, he married Mary Lewis Finley. Doug was a 1966 graduate of Francesville High School and attended Ball State University. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in Vietnam, where he drove a mail truck. He then worked for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier in Valparaiso, Indiana and Santa Ana, California. In Francesville, he was a small business owner and ran a steel wheel manufacturing company (FTC Products), for many years. He was elected to the Francesville Town Board, where he served as Town Board President (aka “The Mayor”. In 2008, he was elected to the Indiana State House of Representatives. For fourteen years, he faithfully served the citizens of District 16. Doug loved his projects, having the best grass in town, sipping gas station coffee with his friends, telling fun stories. He loved his family very much. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lew Gutwein, three children: Jeff (Jennifer) Blewett, Mary Gutwein Eads and Lucy (David) Gutwein Schuetz, seven grandchildren and two brothers: Don (Judy) Gutwein and Rich (Pat) Gutwein. Visitation from 2-8pm EST, Thursday, December 7, at the Apostolic Fellowship Center in Francesville and two hours prior to services at the church on Friday, with services at 2pm EST, with Ministers of the Church officiating. Burial will be in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or the Wounded Warrior Project. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville.

MONTICELLO, IN - FORMERLY OF KNOX, IN - Marion A. Norem, 80, died Thursday, November 30, 2023, in Monticello, Indiana. He was born February 21, 1943, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Clarence and Marian Ada (Smith) Norem. In 1961, he married Catherine Fletcher. In 1965, he married Theodesia Wachowicz. She died October 15, 2012. Marion was a member of the Golden Horseshoe Saddle Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, rodeos and was the all around Indiana cowboy in the 1960’s. His greatest passion was spending time with his family. He had worked as an equipment operator for the railroad. He is survived by his children: Marion “Tink” (Shannon) Norem Jr. of Monticello, Indiana, Kathi (Jeff) Lenig and Wade (Lisa) Norem, both of Knox, Melissa Norem of Indianapolis, Indiana and Jerry (Jennifer) Biddle of Adolphus, Kentucky, sixteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings: Clarence, Clyde and Wendell Norem and Darlene Vrana. No services will be held at this time. Memorials may be made to the Golden Horseshoe Saddle Club. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

She is survived by two sons: Robert (Alisa) Redweik, Jr. of Tomball, Texas and David (Lora) Redweik of Twelve Mile, Indiana, two daughters: Anita Doan of Twelve Mile and Susan (Mike) Wood of Jeffersonville, Ohio, eleven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, two sisters: Edwina M. Martin of Winamac and Mary M. (Jim) Perry of Piqua, Ohio and one brother, Edmund E. (Patty) Gudas of Star City. She was preceded in death by her sister, Johanna C. Gudas and two brothers: Algrid J. and Joseph J. Gudas, Jr. Visitation will be from 2-6pm EST, on Saturday, December 9, at Frain Mortuary, with services at 1pm EST on Sunday, December 10, at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Woodley officiating. Burial will be in the Victor Chapel Cemetery in Star City. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

WINAMAC, IN - (FORMERLY OF CULVER, IN - Lewis Edward Troyer, 91, died Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Hickory Creek @ Winamac in Winamac, Indiana. He was born May 28, 1932, in Culver, Indiana, to the late Edward Manuel and May (Gross) Troyer. On August 11, 1954, in Rochester, Indiana, he married Wilma Whitehead. She died on October 8, 2008. Lewis was a US Army veteran and served in Germany, during the Korean War. He had worked construction most of his life and was part of the crew that built Disney World. He also worked as a long haul truck driver. He and his wife enjoyed dancing and being in bowling leagues together. Lewis enjoyed riding his motorcycle and hunting. He is survived by one son, Richard E. (Deborah) Troyer of Troy, Alabama, eleven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his step mother, Phoebe Troyer, his step father, Lee Dixon, two sons: Brent A. and Leslie W. Troyer and one daughter, Cheryl L. Lowry. Visitation from 10-11am EST, Wednesday, December 6 at Frain Mortuary, with services at 11am EST, with Rev. Nelda Seger officiating. Private burial will take place at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion or the VFW.
