MEDARYVILLE, IN - Chloee Rose Compton, 14, died Tuesday, November 21, 2023. She was born December 30, 2008, in Hobart, Indiana.

Chloee was a freshman at West Central High School and was active in the school choir and enjoyed cooking class. She was an avid reader, loved to draw and go to the beach. She was a great big sister and a helpful loving daughter.

She is survived by her mother, Donna Ellen (Michael) Compton-Grinnell, her father, Jason Lee Compton, Sr., two brothers: Jason Lee Compton, Jr. and Bradley James “BB” Compton, one sister, Faith Ann Compton, grandparents: Deborah L. Bradley, James M. (Ellen) Hickman and Carolyn D. Gentry. and great grandparents, Rose M. Bradley and James F. (Kathryn) Hickman. She was preceded in death by one grandfather, Randy Lee Compton, and great grandparents: Robert Donald Bradley and James and Faye Gentry.

MONTICELLO, IN - FORMERLY OF COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Kelly D. Crandall, 60, died Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born March 6, 1963, in Provo, Utah, to Kent C. and Patsy A. (Mahoney) Crandall. On December 12, 2015, in Colorado Springs, he married Melody A. Coggins.

Kelly was a 1981 graduate of West High School in Sioux City, Iowa and attended BYU and later graduated from Texas Tech University. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served a 2 year mission for the church in Quebec, Canada. He had worked as a solutions engineer for Verizon Business for many years. He was an avid woodworker, reader and writer. He loved the mountains of Utah and enjoyed coaching his son’s sports teams and sharing music with his daughter.

He is survived by his wife, Melody, two daughters: Amy D. (David) MacKay of Seattle, Washington and Claire J. (Joshua) Pugmire of Provo, Utah, one son, Jeffrey D. (Jessica) Crandall of Sandy, Utah, two step daughters: Elyse A. (Brandon) Williams of Winamac, Indiana and Kelsey R. (Kurtis) Erb of Francesville, Indiana, one step son, Ian C. (Megan) Coggins of Denver, Colorado, eleven grandchildren, his father, Kent of Sioux City, three sisters: Ann (Terry) Homer of Richmond, Indiana, Sharon (Dave) Hill of St. Charles, Iowa and Marcia Crandall of Des Moines, Iowa and three brothers: Steve Crandall of Omaha, Nebraska, Reed (Kim Benton) Crandall and Brian Crandall, both of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patsy Crandall, his step mother, Alice Crandall and one sister, Colleen Crandall.

KNOX, IN - Patricia Ruth “Trish” Williamson, 69, died Sunday, November 19, 2023, in Knox, Indiana.

She was born September 23, 1954, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Billy and Ruth (Kirkpatrick) Williamson.

Trish was a 1972 graduate of Hobart High School in Hobart, Indiana and was a Jr. Miss, she later received her Nursing Degree from Purdue North Central. She was a member of the Hobart Boat and Ski club. She enjoyed her life in Scottsdale, Arizona and always loved the finer things in life and lived her life her way. She loved her dog and talking politics.

She is survived by one daughter, Jessica (Robert) Bellamy of Knox, one granddaughter, one great granddaughter and three sisters: Cheryl (Barry) Rippe of Knox, Diana Williamson of Phoenix, Arizona and Janet (Patrick) Clem of Portage, Indiana.

No services will be held.

MARSHA ANN FLAGG

ORA, IN - Marsha Ann Flagg, 70, died Wednesday, November 22, 2023. She was born August 7, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Edward and Barbara Moore. On April 14, 1972, she married Alex Flagg.

Marsha had an Associates Degree in Accounting, but she loved being a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Alex, two children: Carey Ann Flagg and Johnathan William Flagg, both of Ora, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, siblings: Robert Moore and Timothy Moore, both of Monterey, Indiana, Edward Moore of Winamac, Indiana, Cindy Tijerina of Portage, Indiana and Connie Henson of East Bernstadt, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sabrina Lynn Milam and one brother, Christopher Moore.

Private graveside services will be held at the Alexander Heinemann Cemetery in Ora. Arrangements were made by M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox, Indiana.

BONNIE CAROL ZIMMERMAN

NORTH JUDSON, IN - Bonnie Carol Zimmerman, 74, died Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in IU Health La Porte Hospital in La Porte, Indiana. She was born October 8, 1949, in Winamac, Indiana, to the late Julia and Willy Agee. On April 23, 1966, she married Thomas Richard Zimmerman.

Bonnie was a graduate of Culver High School in Culver, Indiana. She enjoyed listening to Elvis and Conway Twitty, doing crafts and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Tom, two children: Tommy (Donna) Zimmerman and Aimee Zimmerman, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren and siblings: Judson (Dorothy) Agee, Peggy Mags and Lorsie (Jimmy) Stone. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shari Zimmerman and siblings: Dorothy Rose, Arlette Heise, Melissa Agee, Riley Agee, Eardon Agee and Richard Agee.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 12-3pm CT on Saturday, December 2, at the O’Donnell Funeral Home, with a memorial service beginning at 3pm.

WANDA LEE WALLEN

KNOX, IN - Wanda Lee Wallen, 74, died Friday, November 24, 2023, in Michigan City, Indiana. She was born September 14, 1949, in Tip Top, Kentucky, to the late Grover and Elsie (Rowe) Mullins. On December 24, 1968, she first married Glenn Howard.

On January 30, 1987, she married William Joseph “Bill” Wallen. He died July 10, 2022.

Wanda was a member of the Community Gospel Baptist Church and loved being surrounded by her family, serving God, quilting, cooking and being with her dog.

She is survived by three daughters: Rhonda (Ron Bauer) Stacy, Amber Wallen and Susan Allen, all of Knox, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three brothers: Charles Mullins of Toto, Indiana, Ray Mullins and Sam Mullins, both of Salyersville, Kentucky and four sisters: Mae Mullins of Tip Top, Kathy Miller of Union City, Ohio, Dora (Kenny) Joseph of Royalton, Kentucky and Mollie (Johnny) King of Salyersville.

She was preceded in death by siblings: Sidney, Frank, Lindenberg, James and Robert Allen, Kelly Mullins and Juanita Watkins.

Services were held Tuesday, November 28, at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Mike Fletcher officiating. Burial was in the Round Lake Cemetery in Knox.

Contributions may be made to the family.

STANLEY G. BOEHNING

FRANCESVILLE, IN - Stanley G. Boehning, 88, died Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Parkview Retirement Home in Francesville, Indiana. He was born March 9, 1935, in rural Francesville, to the late George H. and Emma P. (Schmid) Boehning. On September 2, 1956, in Monon, Indiana, he married Maxine J. Boze.

Stanley was a 1953 graduate of Francesville High School and had served in the US Army Reserves. He was a lifelong farmer and had also driven a semi for several years and enjoyed traveling the country. He was a member of the Francesville Apostolic Christian Church. He was a former president of the Pulaski County Fair Board and a former Pulaski County Commissioner and had previously served on the Francesville Co-Op Elevator Board.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine, one son, Darrell L. Boehning of Indianapolis, Indiana, one daughter, Kimberly A. Davidson of Indianapolis, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Brian Boehning and one brother, Glen A. Boehning.

Funeral services will be held at 10am EST, Wednesday, November 29, at the Apostolic Christian Church, with Ministers of the Church officiating. Burial will be in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville, with Chad French officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkview Haven Retirement Home or the Apostolic Christian Church.

LaCROSSE, IN - Stella Cook, 92, died Saturday, November 25, 2023, at her home. She was born May 2, 1932, to the late Julia and Max Shepherd. On April 1, 1950, she married Philip Cook.

Stella loved to sing and dance. She also loved ice cream, watching old movies, attending church and especially her family.

She is survived by her children: Sandy (John) Feely of Speedway, Indiana, Steve (Karen) Cook of LaCrosse and Jan (Tim) Krulik of North Judson, Indiana, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Debbe Bailey, three sisters: Louise Krueger, Joyce Coldiron and Jean Adams and four brothers: Woodrow, Johnny, Menafee and Albert Shepherd.

Services will be held Friday, December 1, at the O’Donnell Funeral Home with visitation from 10am-2pm with funeral immediately following visitation.

A graveside service will the held at the Oak Grove Cemetery in LaCrosse.

DIANA LEE SMITH

NORTH JUDSON, IN - Diana Lee Smith, 71, died Friday, November 24, 2023, in Knox, Indiana. She was born February 3, 1952, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Edward and Janice (Dankert) Henricks. On July 27, 1974, she married William “Bill” Smith.

Diana was a 6th grade teacher for 34 years at North Judson Junior High School. She retired in 2010, bought a 2nd home in Lake Placid, Florida, where she enjoyed many activities with her husband. She attended th United Methodist Church in North Judson and the Community Church of God in Lake Placid. She enjoyed baking, playing games with her grandchildren, riding the motorcycle with her husband, selling tickets at school sporting events, playing cards at the American Legion and campground, crocheting and special moments with her daughters.

She is survived by two daughters: Marilouise (Susan) Almeda of Kawkawlin, Michigan and Jessica (Keith) Pingel of North Judson, four grandchildren, two brothers: Donald Henricks of Knox, Indiana and Leo (Julie) Henricks of North Judson and one sister, Janet (Goble) Conley of North Judson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and two angel babies.

Friends will be received from 10am till time of services at 1pm on Saturday, December 2 at the Braman & Bailey Funeral Home. Rev. Sean Johnson will be officiating the service.

My name is Dr. William Perry. I was born in 1837 in Philadelphia. When I was very young, my family moved to Logansport, where I grew up and lived until around the time of the Civil War. During the Civil War, I served in the Indiana 73rd Volunteer Infantry along with my brother. After the Civil War, I decided to move to the North Judson area, where I lived with the William Hines family. At that time, which was around 1870, only about 150 people were located here.

I was one of the very first local doctors. I married my wife, Ann Jarrett, in 1871. Our daughter, Anna, was born around 1877. We built our own house in town, and the house still stands.

Around 1872, I ran for state representative of Starke and Laporte Counties. I served in that position, then later became the 12th Auditor of Starke County and served as that until my death.

My death happened on October 10, 1887, on a dark, foggy night. My family and I were returning from Chicago. Due to a severe mechanical issue, our train could only run at about half speed. Traveling south, our train was about two hours late when we stopped two-and-a-half miles out of Kouts at one of the water stations to replenish the overheated engine with water.

Despite knowing that our engine was having issues, the railroad sent a freight train on the same tracks. Additionally, this freight train was given specific orders to get to the east coast as fast as possible. Unfortunately, the space they allowed between our train and the freight train wasn’t enough.

While we were stopped at Kouts, even though our lanterns were lit as a warning that we were there, the freight train never saw us and rear ended the back of our train. A Pullman car was at the very back; the daycoach we were in was the secondto-last car. The metal Pullman car launched forward and smashed our car between it and the baggage car (located just in front of us). This split the back of our wooden day coach like an eggshell, blew out all the walls, and launched us passengers forward into a pile in the very front of the car. Then the seats came down on top of us, followed by the roof and beams (which had no walls to support them.) I was pinned on top of the seats by the roof beams, while my wife and daughter were pinned beneath the seats.

During the accident the heating stove tipped over and the coals started a small fire at the front of the car. Because our car was made of wood, the fire caught hold and spread fast.

I could get my body halfway out of the train car, but couldn’t turn and rescue my family. As the flames came forward, my family and others started to burn. Listening to their screams caused me to go into a frantic wail. When I realized no one was coming to my aid, I ended up just sitting back, my head slowly disappearing from the window.

The next day, when they came to recover the bodies of those of us who had died in the accident, all that remained of me and my family was a pile of ashes. Those remains were placed into a 14” by 14” box. That box with our ashes was brought back here to Pioneer Cemetery and buried.

I was just 28 years old. It was a long, arduous journey, but we arrived in one piece, and that is what truly matters. I lived around here the rest of my life.

When we came to North Judson, we were surrounded by marshes and animals of every kind. We have what seems like millions of birds all year long. I hear tell that they are soon gonna dredge this here river. They aim to take all of the bends and turns out of it so that it will flow faster. I say if the good Lord made it that way, we should leave it that way.

You know the Hope Restored Building downtown? Well, that used to be called the Neupert Building. Some of our family built that building and are we proud of it! It has gone through many changes over the years, but it sure looks purty.

You know, George and I had eight children. Two are gone now, John and William. However, I have my other six. Two live in town to visit and keep us company.

Well anyway, a while back my husband and I went to Danville to see our son Frank. Oh how I love my Frank.

He is doing so well for himself. We stayed with him for a few weeks and then we had to come back to North Judson to take care of the home place. It was such a great time visiting with him.

This past Monday, George and I took a little trip to see our dear friend Fred. Fred hasn’t been doing so well lately and I’m afraid he is sick with something. He is so ill that I convinced George to drive all the way out to Denham so we could check on him. Though I couldn’t do much to help him, I did make him one of my famous apple pies. That made him perk right up for a while.

You know, God has always been a huge part of me and my family’s life. A few years ago, we helped start a Lutheran church in our hometown. I am so excited about our church. I hope it stays around for a long, long time.

I will say, I have lived a good life. I love my God, my family, my friends, and my town. I have tried to be a good neighbor and community member. I hope that the work that I have done in my life will live long after I am gone.
