www.themarketadvertising.com

I’m Dr. George Corbitt. Born in Ontario, Canada in 1874, to a farm family, I decided I wanted to be a dentist when I was 20 years old, so I went to London to start my dentistry studies there. Then I came to the United States, where I finished my dentistry studies at Northwestern University near Chicago. Once finished, I wanted to start my own practice and learned that North Judson would be a prime spot. Arriving here around May, 1900, I lived at the Transit Hotel and set up my practice there. However, I quickly moved into a room at the back of the local photography shop. My practice actually moved around quite a bit until I joined Dr. Davis. We then had a joint practice here in town for many years. For Christmas, 1902, I went home to Canada. Mary Elizabeth and I had been high school sweethearts, and we married that holiday. I brought her back here, where we were greeted by a huge fanfare from the community. When we stepped off the train, the music and cheers of the townspeople almost took Mary Elizabeth’s breath away. We would have two children. Our first child was stillborn and is buried beside us here in Pioneer Cemetery. Many of you may remember our second child, Mary Margaret, who was born in 1909. I had a huge impact on this town. I was one of the townspeople who worked hard for the library to be built, and I served as first president of that board. I also helped start a local Boy Scout troop and was president of the local Red Cross chapter during World War I. Additionally, I was a 32-degree Mason, not to mention being involved in many other civic and community activities. My life ended abruptly in 1932. On a Friday I received a call from Canada that my mother was in criticalcondition. Shehadfallenandbrokenherhip. MywifeandI,alongwithonefriend, decidedwe would travel by automobile to Canada. We had reached Canada and were crossing a train track around 3:30 in the afternoon. We did not hear a train coming, but at the last second, I saw it and swerved so it hit primarily in the driver’s side door. Mary Elizabeth and the other passenger were slightly injured. I had to be rescued from the vehicle and died about 45 minutes later in the local hospital. My body was taken to my sister’s house, where the first funeral was held. Then my casket, escorted by Mary Elizabeth, traveled by train to Michigan City, IN where a caravan of local residents met us and brought us back to my home in North Judson. My funeral here was probably one of the most attended funerals in North Judson’s history. Many townspeople as well as members of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and the Eastern Star from other towns came. Local businesses closed between 2:00-4:00 that day plus extracurricular events and other activities were canceled. My funeral was held in my home, then I was brought here to be buried. My wife died years later and is buried beside me. Many people do not realize that the house we lived in was actually the same house that was originally owned by the Dr. Perry family who perished in the Kouts train wreck in 1887. The house was next owned by Dr. James Nolan, then Andrew Bunnell, who sold the house to me (Dr. Corbitt) in 1913.
