NENITA VARGAS HEDGER
WINAMAC, IN - Nenita Vargas Hedger, 70, died Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in the Catanduanes Doctors Hospital in Virac, Catanduanes, Philippines. She was born August 1, 1953, in Codon, San Andres, Philippines, to the late Frisco and Angustia Samonte Vargas. On August 31, 1971, in Angeles City, Philippines, she married Jerry Hedger. Nenita was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking and get togethers with her Pinoy friends. She is survived by her husband, Jerry and two brothers: Oscar (Augustina) Vargas of Virac and Eddie (Mary Lou) Vargas of Codon. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Services and entombment was held earlier this month at the San Andres Catholic Cemetery in San Andres, Philippines. A celebration of life will take place at a later date at Jerry’s house. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL - Margaret “Peggy” Burzinski, 81, died at 8:15am, Friday, October 27, 2023, at her home. She was born July 19, 1942, in Pulaski County, Indiana, to the late Harry Joseph and Iva Lucile (Degner) Roth. Peggy was a 1960 graduate of Star City High School and a 1966 graduate of Ball State University. She taught preschool for a number of years and after raising her children she worked for Chicago Freight Car Rental until retirement. She also volunteered in her community helping others. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and baking and she loved her family very much. She is survived by two daughters: Laura (Chris) McDaniel of Gloucestershire, England and Kara (Matt) Kulak of Arlington Heights, one son, Stephen Burzinski of Chicago, Illinois, four grandchildren, three brothers: Harold “Sonny” (Patty) Roth of Pulaski, Indiana, Richard “Bub” (Sandy) Roth of Winamac, Indiana and Robert (Kathy) Roth of The Villages, Florida and one sister, Rebecca (Chuck) Zellers of Winamac. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Patsy Ann Shoemaker and Mary Lea “Dee Dee” and one brother, Willliam R. “Bill” Roth. A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski on November 18, at 11am EST, with Rev. Dennis Faker officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery South in Pulaski. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor. Local arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

KNOX, IN - David R. Hays, 87, died Saturday, October 28, 2023 in La Porte, Indiana. He was born February 24, 1936, in Arcola, Indiana, to the late Roland and Mary (Conrad) Hays. David was a member of the Knox United Methodist Church and enjoyed the Talking Books Association and spending time with his family. He had worked as a truck driver. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, one son, Steven (Sharon) Hays of Port Charlotte, Florida, one daughter, Rebecca (Jay) Johanan of Piney Flatts, Tennessee, one step daughter, Cheryl (Burlie) Stacy of Knox, two step sons: Daryl Reed of North Judson, Indiana and Gary (Jackie) Reed of Culver, Indiana, ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Hays, one son, David Hays and one daughter, Carolyn Ann Hays and siblings. A celebration of life service as held Saturday, November 4, at the Knox United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the family. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

PARK FALLS, WI - Jean Calvert, 93, died Friday, October 27, 2023, at Park Manor Nursing Home in Park Falls, Wisconsin. She was born August 31, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Joseph and Santa (Scro) Penicaro. On June 22, 1949, she married Marsden “Mark” Calvert. He died May 24, 1987. She is survived by one daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Christie, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia “Patty” Stevens, seven sisters: Grace Scrol, Marie Price, Rose Penicaro, Jennie Bodden, Jesephine “Penny” Karras, Dorothy “Anne” Hartnett and her twin, Julie Penicaro and one brother, Frank Penicaro. Private burial will take place in the Winamac Cemetery in Winamac, Indiana. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
CHRIS LEE WUETHRICH, JR.
TROY, IL - FORMERLY OF FRANCESVILLE, IN - Chris Lee Wuethrich, Jr., 60, died Monday, October 30, 2023, at his home, after a 7 month battle with cancer. In 1982, he married Carla J. Gutwein. Chris was a 1981 graduate of West Central High School, where he played trumpet in the band and bass guitar after school and weekends with his buddies. He was a 1989 graduate of Purdue University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics and Finance. He centered his career loving agriculture, being a Grain Merchandiser for over 30 years and then to sales in the last 4 years with a subsurface drip irrigation company. He had attended the Apostolic Christian Church in Francesville and then was called to the ministry in 1991 and had preached the gospel in four different churches over the past 32 years. He was elder and shepherd of his St. Louis Church. He loved his family very much. He is survived by his wife, Carla, two sons: Levi (Kyann) Wuethrich of Wadsworth, Ohio and Landon (Hannah) Wuethrich of Burlington, Iowa, three daughters: Meagan (Brad) Frank of LaCrosse, Indiana, Marissa Wuethrich of Chicago, Illinois and Cambria Wuethrich of Troy, Illinois, nine grandchildren, three brothers: Ken (Lyn) Wuethrich of Indianapolis, Indiana, Kevin (Connie) Wuethrich of Francesville and Kirby (April) Wuethrich of Zionsville, Indiana and two sisters: Kitty (Dennis) Gutwein of Francesville and Kelly (Mark) Ramseyer of Livonia, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents: Chris Lee and Ruth (Stoller) Wuethrich and one daughter, Mandy Lee Wuethrich. Graveside services were held Monday, November 6, at the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville. Memorials may be made to the Chris Wuethrich Memorial Fund or the Apostolic Christian Church HarvestCall. He died November 13, 2013. She is survived by one son, Eugene Lovely of Valparaiso, one daughter, Katelynn Tunis of Monticello, Indiana, six grandchildren, many great and great great grandchildren and two siblings: Charles and Nancy. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Kay Baker and ten siblings. A private burial will take place in the St. Mark Cemetery in Medaryville, Indiana. KNOX, IN - Darleen Ruth Redlin, 73, died Thursday, November 2, 2023, in Winamac, Indiana. She was born May 3, 1950, in Winamac, to the late Carl and Ruth (St. Peter) Redlin. Darleen attended St. Peter Lutheran Church. She enjoyed woodworking, working on cars and spending time with her family. She had worked as a custodian for Pulaski Memorial Hospital. She is survived by four grandchildren, two brothers: Virgil (Beulah) Redlin of Knox and Gary Redlin of North Judson, Indiana and two sisters: Bonnie (Gary) Minix of Winamac and Linda Bailey of North Judson. She was preceded in death by one son, John Redlin, two brothers: Dean and Carl Jr. Redlin and one sister, Lyla Beauchamp. Burial will be in the Oak Park Cemetery in Knox. Marcos will be remembered as a loving, caring and funny person who was always happy. He loved watching and playing football and spending time with his family. NORTH JUDSON, IN - Violet M. Ono, 92, died Friday, November 3, 2023. She was born February 3, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late John “Jack” and Margaret (Creighton) Robinson. On March 23, 1952, she married George H. Ono. Violet graduated from Knox High School and then worked at the courthouse in the surveyor’s office. She was a faithful member of the North Judson United Methodist Church and was very active in the Chancel Choir, Contemporary Issues Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women’s group. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed her exercise class at Bass Lake, was an avid reader and listened to books on tape. She loved learning, meeting and talking to people, was a fan of Jeopardy and listening to WKVI. After her husband had a stroke, she was his main caregiver for 35 years. Her family was very special to her. She is survived by her children: George L., Jacalynn Ciboch, Jennifer (Eric) Braun and Julie (Nels) Vorm, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Rosetta Short and one brother, Leeman Robinson. Visitation from 10am-1pm, with services starting at 1pm at the North Judson United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made to the North Judson United Methodist Church, Kid’s Closet Ministries or Community Services of Starke County. KNOX, IN - Patrick K. McNeal, 50, died Friday, November 3, 2023, in La Porte, Indiana. He was born March 20, 1973, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late James and Sandra (Correll) McNeal. On May 20, 2006, in South Bend, he married Rose LoCoco. Preston was always the jokester. He enjoyed fishing with his wife, working on cars with his boys, watching football, mowing the yard, watching NASCAR and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Rose and two sons: James and Peyton McNeal, all of Knox. He was preceded in death by one sister, Melissa Crane. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. NORTH JUDSON, IN - Freida Bailey, 78, died Friday, November 3, 2023, in Merrillville, Indiana. She was born March 20, 1945, in Decoy, Kentucky, to the late Buck and Ellen (Shepherd) Stacy. On July 26, 1961, in Knox, Indiana, she married Troy Bailey. He died April 23, 2014. Freida enjoyed yard work, tending her flowers and gardening. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family and sitting on her front porch and spending time with her family. She is survived by two sons: Kenny (Kim) Bailey of North Judson and Roger Bailey of Hernando, Florida, two daughters: Kim (Scott) Lutz of Bremen, Indiana and Rhonda (Jimmy) Ahlenius of Knox, sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and three sisters: Dorsey McKinney of Fort Myers, Florida, Francis Shock of Knox and Genna (Doug) Bunton of Plymouth, Indiana. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shelly Bodine, one grandson, Troy Dylan Bailey, three brothers: Arnold, Dexter and Aaron Stacy and three sisters: Dallas Smith, Media Klingerman and Georgia Howard. Services were held Tuesday, November 7, at Braman & Bailey Funeral Home. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery in North Judson. Arrangements were made by Braman & Bailey Funeral Home in North Judson.
Pioneer Cemetery in North Judson “If Tombstones Could Talk” Hello, I am Magdalena Meyer Schricker, Chris Schricker’s wife. We are some of the many immigrants in this community. I was born in Germany April, 1852. In 1881 (when I was 29), I came to the United States, traveled to Wayne Township and married Chris Schricker. His first wife had died so he was looking for another wife to help with raising his young son. Chris was also from Bavaria. He had Immigrated years earlier to New York City, west to Chicago, and then located in Starke County. For 7 years Chris had worked for the Pennsylvania Railway Company. He then invested his savings in a small farm in Wayne Township and farmed for about 6 years during his first marriage. Chris’s first wife, Elizabeth, was also born in Bavaria, but as a young woman came to this country, where she married Chris. She died in March, 1880, on their farm in Wayne Township, at only twenty-four years of age. Her only son, George William, (we call him Billy) was born in 1878. Elizabeth is buried on the other side of Chris. After she died, Chris helped arrange for me to come over and we married. During the early years of our marriage, he worked in Jacob Keller’s grist mill. Chris then bought a lot here in town and built his first and only store building, called the “Economy Store” and ran it for the rest of his working days. Billy helped his father in the store and later took over managing it. I am the mother of three children: Catherine, Henry, and Annie. The girls married and moved to Chicago. Our son Henry is also married and lives in Knox, but I’ll talk more about him later. My husband, Chris, helped start the first Lutheran Church here and we were active members. In the later years (1913), a group of us local ladies formed a Lutheran Ladies’ Aid. A few years ago our ladies group helped plan for a new church, which was finished in 1920 at the corner of Lane St. and the Liberty Way (the road passing by here). We helped raise money for the building and purchased an organ for the new church. Chris and I weren’t the only immigrants around here. A large number of immigrants from Germany had settled here and were also active in the Lutheran Church. A few years ago, in 1919, many of them came to our house on Lane Street on a Friday evening as a surprise to celebrate both my and “Dad’s” birthdays, which were just a few weeks apart. I’ve mentioned my son, Henry, before. He’s quite a go-getter and very talented - plays the piano, reads, and has always been a hard worker. He worked in the grocery store when he was young. Later, he became a lawyer by taking jobs at the clerk’s office and studying law on the side. In 1908, he purchased a local newspaper and was its publisher and editor until 1919, when he sold the paper. Henry then became a banker. In 1914, he and Maude Brown married in Knox, where Henry is known for his work as a volunteer firefighter. Just like my husband, Henry is a staunch Democrat and he has big dreams. He ran for Clerk of the Circuit Court a few years ago but got defeated. However, I know he’ll run for office again. I think someday he will be someone really important - maybe even the first person to be elected governor of this state twice.
