Pioneer Cemetery in North Judson “If Tombstones Could Talk”

Hello, I’m John L. Lain. I was born Nov. 26, 1841 in Brown County, OH to Moses & Mary Lain. We moved to southern Indiana when I was very young. Pa got a job there as a laborer. Later he bought land in Starke County and we moved here in 1852 (I was 10). In April, 1861, the Civil War broke out. Like a lot of us here, I’m a veteran of that war. My pa (Moses Lain) enlisted in the Indiana 35th Reg. He died in camp at Louisville of a bacterial infection in 1864. A lot of the soldiers died of illness in camp. He’s buried there, although they did put a marker in this cemetery, too. I (John) enlisted in the army in 1863 as a private in the 23rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company G. - and served until the end of the war. My first engagement was at the Siege at Vicksburg. Orders from General Grant were to just wait them out since they were short on supplies. Vicksburg fell on July 4 - although the 23rd remained there till February, 1864. We received a furlough for a couple of weeks in March and April, 1864. Orders came that we were to move through Tennessee to Georgia in May & June to be under Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign - beginning June 9, 1864 The first real engagement I saw was Kenesaw Mountain June 27, 1864. There was very heavy fighting and the Confederates claimed the victory, but they didn’t stop us. We pushed on East Next came Nickajack Creek on July 4. We outmaneuvered the entrenched Confederates and the Union won. On July 22 Battle of Atlanta began. Atlanta fell on September 2. We occupied it until early November when the Burning of Atlanta was ordered so that we could move on. Next came the March to the Sea - also called the Savannah Campaign - in November to December, 1864. Orders were given that November to “burn mills, houses, cotton gins, etc in any area where there was resistance” - which was pretty much everywhere. In Savannah, I got a shell wound in my leg. When the war ended, I returned to Starke County, where I would live next door to my mother, younger sister, and brothers, where I farmed. My wife Lizzie and I would have 7 children. If you’re interested, here’s a story about someone who helped my unit during the Civil War. There wasn’t enough time during the cemetery walk. Lucy Higgs Nichols, nicknamed “Aunt Lucy” by the Indiana 23rd Regiment, was an escaped slave who informally joined the regiment at Tennessee in 1862. She worked as a forager, seamstress, washerwoman, cook, and nurse for the unit. Following her daughter’s death during the siege of Vicksburg, the regiment conducted a funeral, complete with arranged flowers, in the midst of the ongoing siege. Aunt Lucy stayed with the 23rd for the remainder of the war. She even attended the Grand Review of the Armies in 1865. Following the war, she returned with the unit to Indiana where she settled in New Albany, Indiana, and worked as a housekeeper. Lucy was the first and only African-American woman to be awarded an honorary membership in the unit’s Grand Army of the Republic post. Later in life in 1898, with the help of some officers from the 23rd, Lucy Nichols was awarded a veteran pension.
