JAMES OLIVER HAHN

CULVER, IN - FORMERLY OF CRETE, IL AND DeMOTTE, IN -

James Oliver “Jim” Hahn, 83, died Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Center for Hospice Care in Mishawaka, Indiana, following a hardfought battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born November 23, 1940, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, to the late Elmer Arnold and Marie Catherine (Gunther) Hahn. On September 14, 1963, in Steger, Illinois, he married Charlotte Ann “Shotsie” Grimes.

Jim was a 1958 graduate of Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights. He was a veteran of the US Army. He had a distinguished 33 year long career with NIPSCO and retired as the Director of Information Technology. He was a longtime board member and past-president of the NIPSCO Federal Credit Union. After retirement, he worked as a consultant for several small businesses. He was a member of the St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Culver and had lovingly created the beautiful wooden frames for the Stations of the Cross and two wooden candle holders for the altar. He was a member of the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club, the Culver Lions Club and served on the Culver Union Township Library Board and a member and past-president. He enjoyed spending time on Lake Maxinkuckee, spending time with friends in the ROMEO Club and at Wine Time events, Traveling with his wife to all 50 states and 6 continents, building and collecting garden scale trains. He was an avid sports fan and supported Notre Dame football, Notre Dame Girls basketball and the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte “Shotsie”, one son, Timothy (Jeanne) Hahn of Cary, North Carolina, two grandsons, one sister, Judith Hahn of Lisle, Illinois and one brother, William Hahn of Park Forest, Illinois. He was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Hahn.

A Lions Memorial service will be held at 9:30am EDT, on Friday, April 12, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church. A funeral mass will start at 10am EDT, with Rev. Stephen Felicichia officiating. Private burial will take place at a later date at the Momence Cemetery in Momence, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, Culver Lions Club or St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church.

Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac, Indiana.

WANDA GEHRKE

SAN PIERRE, IN - Wanda Gehrke, 83, died Thursday, March 21, 2024. She was born April 6, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Stanley and Mary (Rayonec) Wasilewski. On October 26, 1958, she married Clarence Gehrke.

Wanda was a 1957 graduate of San Pierre High School. She loved animals and had an array of pets including cats, dogs and horses. She had a green thumb and loved her flowers. She was a great cook and enjoyed going to the lakes in Northern Minnesota, going to casinos in Las Vegas and once had her picture up at the Blue Chip Casino for a big win. She loved her family very much. She is survived by her husband, Clarence, two sons: Donald of North Judson, Indiana and William of Knox, Indiana, one daughter, Marge of Kouts, Indiana, four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Gloria Wodrich and Stella Wasilewski.

Visitation will be at 11am CT, Wednesday, March 27, followed by a funeral at 1pm CT, at the O’Donnell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the San Pierre Cemetery. Arrangements were made by O’Donnell Funeral Home, Inc. in North Judson.

ROBERT POWERS

WINAMAC, IN - Robert “Bob” Powers, 85, died Monday, March 18, 2024, at his home. He was born May 28, 1938, in Winamac, Indiana, to the late Albert and Hazel (Zellers) Powers. On May 31, 1958, he married Beverly “Bev” Ludwig in Winamac. She died in 2010. Bob was a devoted member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Winamac Knights of Columbus Council #1561 (he served as Grand Knight in 1979) and was instrumental in securing the property where the current K of C hall stands today. He was also a member and Past President of the Winamac Jaycees and a longtime member of the Winamac Lions Club and for 6 years donated potatoes for use at the Farmer’s Market. He was very supportive of his children’s involvement in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and the Winamac High School Band. He helped start the Winamac Alumni Association where he served in every office before becoming President in 2006. Bob served many years on the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, Tribal Trails Girl Scout Council and the Merit Board of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department. He loved farming, driving trucks and was very proud that the family farm was recognized as a Hoosier Homestead. He enjoyed mowing and keeping an eye on the cemetery. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed sharing them with others. He won a heat race at Shadyhill in 1986. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with people.

82, died Sunday, March 17, 2024. Private burial will take place at Winamac Cemetery (McFarland Addition).

DeMOTTE, IN - Albert “Al” Czarnecki

Jr., 58, died Saturday, March 16, 2024, at his home. He was born July 9, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Albert Sr. and Patricia (Knapp) Czarnecki. On December 16, 1988, in Winamac, Indiana, he married Rebecca “Becky” Stembel.

Al was a 1983 graduate of LaCrosse High School. He worked as a maintenance man at DeMotte Elementary for many years. He was a member of the Sons of the Legion Squadron #92 in North Judson, Indiana. One of his favorite hobbies was playing with the grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Becky, children: Chance (Allisha) Czarnecki, Donovan (Sara Rodriguez) Czarnecki and Echo (Mike) Mann, four grandchildren, siblings: Rod Czarnecki and Jean (Tom) Walters and step mother, Nancy Czarnecki. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Daphne Rodriguez and brother, Rick Czarnecki.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 27, at the Wheatfield Cemetery in Wheatfield, Indiana.

Arrangements were made by Boersma Funeral Home in Wheatfield.

He is survived by two daughters: Valerie Powers of Winamac and Kathryn Rodela of Osceola, Indiana, one son, Scott Powers of Winamac, eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one brother, Ronald Powers.

He was preceded in death by four sisters: Thelma Powers, Dorothy Watnes, Lucile Allen Gast and Lois Cors Meyer and five brothers: James, Richard, Thomas, Infant Carol and Harry Powers. Services were held Saturday, March 23, at St. Peter Catholic Church, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. Burial was in the St. Peter Cemetery in Winamac. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Cemetery or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
