The annual meeting of the Community Services of Starke County, Inc.’s general membership will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 8:30 a.m. at 311 E. Culver Road, Knox, Indiana. The public is invited to attend but only regular members will be entitled to vote on the program plans and the executive board appointees for the year 2024. Regular members are those who have paid the annual membership fee of $10.00 in 2023. Community Services of Starke County, Inc. provides services in order for families to remain independent in their own homes. Services include: public transportation, nutrition, information and assistance, energy assistance, call-a-day, food pantry, and health equipment loan program. The executive board presently serving include Mark Rippy, president, Tom Torsell, vice-president; Susan Christian, secretary; Mike Tolson, treasurer; and members, Arlene Sellers, Julie Smith, Jacalynn Ciboch, Doris Kibert, Marilyn Zabinski, Sheri Bartoli, and Mike Yankauskas. CARL MICHAEL CALFEE
WINAMAC, IN - Carl Michael Calfee, 74, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at his home. He was born June 30, 1949, in Oceanside, California, to Marine CPL Carl Edison and Nora Frances (Boyle) Calfee. As a young boy, his father was killed in an auto accident and his mother died of tuberculosis and Carl was adopted by his uncle Leonard Floyd Calfee and his aunt Loureene Enid (Kinsey) Calfee. On November 6, 1976, he married Carol Sue Heims. Carl was a veteran of the US Navy, where he had the privilege to serve aboard the USS Saratoga CV-60 during the world’s first evaluation of the CV concept. Over the years he had worked for John Williamson construction, Winamac Steel, Torx and 31 years at Galbreath. Carl enjoyed hiking, long walks, mushroom hunting and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Carol, one son, Jeremy Calfee of Kewanna, Indiana, two daughters: Dana (Michael) Creasy and Nichole (Luke Fritz) Calfee, both of Winamac, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his dad and mom, Leonard Floyd and Loureene Enid Calfee and three sisters: Jerlaine Carla Kasper, Constance Ellen Esparza and Ann Frances Calfee. Services will be held Wednesday, January 17, at 11am EST, at Frain Mortuary, with Pastor James Adcock officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. ZionFranklin Twp. Cemetery in Winamac. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to assist with final expenses. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

WINAMAC, IN - Edwina “Winnie” Martin, 82, died Monday, January 8, 2024, at her home. She was born January 21, 1941, in Winamac, Indiana, to the late Joseph and Antonia (Arndt) Gudas. On September 16, 1967, in Winamac, she married Michael Martin. He died June 22, 2004. Winnie was a 1958 graduate of Star City High School in Star City, Indiana and then from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She was retired from a career in graphic arts. She was a history buff and rock enthusiast who enjoyed traveling, watching
game shows and gardening. She had served on the board of Pulaski Human Services. She loved her family very much. She is survived by one daughter, Antoinette “Tina” (Ken) Zuchel of Palatine, Illinois, two sons: Michael “Hook” Martin, Jr. of Coloma, Michigan and Eric (Iwona) Martin of Plano, Illinois, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and siblings: Mary (Jim) Perry of Piqua, Ohio and Ed (Patty) Gudas of Star City. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Bette MartinEdgar, one granddaughter, Kaitlyn Edgar and siblings: Jojo Gudas, Al Gudas, Joseph Gudas, Millie Redweik and infants Frankie and Johnny Gudas. Services were held Sunday, January 14, at Frain Mortuary, with Pastor Jeff Seger officiating. Private entombment was in the Winamac Cemetery (South Lawn Addition) in Winamac. Memorial contributions may be made to Pulaski County Human Services. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

WINAMAC, IN - Margaret Ann Reid, 68, died Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. She was born June 10, 1955, in Winamac, Indiana, to the late Chris E. and Roseann (Hein) Ols. On April 19, 1975, in Monticello, Indiana, she married Michael Reid. Margaret had worked at BraunAbility for over 25 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and traveling. She loved her family very much. She is survived by her former spouse, Michael Reid of Star City, three daughters: Tonia (Jeremy Wagner) Reid of Winamac, Erin (Chris Lease) Reid and Beth (Dave Fellers) Reid, both of Bruce Lake, Indiana, three granddaughters and one brother, Chris A. (Lee) Ols of Greentown, Indiana. Private graveside services were held at Mt. Zion-Franklin Twp. Cemetery in Winamac, with Chaplain Teri White officiating. A celebration of life was held Saturday, January 13, at the Opera House in Winamac. Memorials may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation or plant a tree in her memory. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

WINAMAC, IN - Betty Louise Podell, 90, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac, Indiana. She was born August 15, 1933, in Denham, Indiana, to the late Kenneth and Rosanna (Rater) Kasten. On October 24, 1951, in North Judson, Indiana, she married Orvel W. Podell, Jr. He died November 30, 2018. Betty was a 1951 graduate of North Judson High School. She was a retired farmer and sub postmaster in Denham and a member of the First Baptist Church of Denham and Gideon’s International. She was also a member of the Pulaski County Democrats and Pulaski County Farm Bureau. Betty had served on the Pulaski County Election Board and as the Jefferson Township Trustee for many years. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially farming and gardening and she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by three daughters: Rhonda (Jim) Pierrou, Karen Button and Laura (Keith) Heigl, all of Winamac, twelve grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, one sister, Vera Ward of Valparaiso, Indiana and two brothers: John (Joyce) Cooper, Jr. of Hebron, Indiana and Dan (Deb) Cooper of Greenup, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her step father, John M. Cooper, an infant grandson, John Melvin Button, an infant great grandson, Leland T. Howard-Button and one brother, Thomas Kasten. Services were held Tuesday, January 15, at Frain Mortuary, with grandsons, Jeff Heigl and Cody Pierrou officiating. Burial was in the Denham Cemetery in Denham. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

NORTH JUDSON, IN - Benjamin Wayne Hess, 49, died Tuesday, January 9, 2024 in La Porte, Indiana. He was born October 8, 1974, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Joseph and Rebecca (Proctor) Hess. Benjamin enjoyed landscaping, drawing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Rebecca Hess of North Judson and one sister, Rachel (Mike) Billisitz. Friends will be received from 2-5pm on Saturday, February 3, for a celebration of life gathering at the home of Joseph and Rebecca Hess. Arrangements were made by Braman & Bailey Funeral Home in North Judson.
Our beloved son, Michael Mitchell Matheos,36, of Sturgis, MI passed away unexpectedly on January 5, 2024. He was born in Mishawaka, IN on June 28, 1987 to Mitchell M. Matheos and Debra A. (Woodhurst) Forsythe. A proud graduate of Elkhart Memorial High School, class of 2006, Michael worked at Carpenters Local 413. He completed the apprenticeship program and received his journeyman’s card. He enjoyed playing frisbee disc golf and cooking, and his happiest moments were spent creating cherished memories with his beloved nephews Mitchell and Jaxyn Matheos, and niece Alice Matheos. Michael loved Star Wars and was a big fan of Boba Fett. Michael is survived by his father, Mitchell and his stepmother Susan Matheos, his mother, Debra (Woodhurst) Forsythe, and stepfather Jim Forsythe; brother, Thomas M. Matheos (Carling); stepsister, Ellen Hensley (Joe); stepbrother, Scott Kwast. He is survived by his grandmother, Barbara Matheos; grandparents, Eddie and Mabel Staerkel; grandmother, Linda McCune. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bud McCune and Bill Woodhurst. He is also survived by Bailey Kasa and her three children. Michael will be laid to rest next to his grandfather, Minas Matheos “Papou” at Southlawn Cemetery. Funeral services were held Friday, January 12, at Palmer Funeral Home -Hickey Chapel, in South Bend, IN. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
