Your Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation (WACF) is a not-for-profit working to protect, preserve and enhance the Wawasee Area Watershed for present and future generations with focus on the water quality in our lakes and streams.
In our work to understand problems and challenges to water quality, WACF committed to a ground-breaking study: the Wawasee Inlets Nutrient Study (WINS). WINS is a 3-yr intensive statisticallydriven study of nutrients and sediment coming into, going out of, and staying in Wawasee using six gage stations at inflows and the outflow at Syracuse Dam. These gage stations test every four hours during the spring flow. Why test so often? The amount of sediment and nutrients can vary widely over the course of a day-see water test samples below.
Note the difference in the amount of sediment every four hours. Sediment is dirt, and it carries phosphorous and other nutrients. This demonstrates that a study with just one grab sample on a given day would be greatly insufficient to statistically estimate total nutrient and sediment loads. What we have learned Year 1 and 2: • One drop of water entering Lake Wawasee takes 2.2 years on average to exit the lake via Turkey Creek (at the dam in Syracuse). • Nearly half of the water in Lake Wawasee is replaced each year. • Phosphorous is the limiting nutrient, meaning that an excess of phosphorous will cause increased growth of weeds and algae beyond the target for a healthy lake (30 ppb).

Henry Ward Park – Henry Ward Park hosts a boardwalk, fishing pier, and a recently updated playground. It is a popular fishing spot, hosting many Bass Fishing Tournaments throughout the spring-fall months. The park is conveniently located adjacent to the public access site for Syracuse Lake for easy access to put in and take out boats. Lakeside Park – Lakeside Park is the anchor of the Syracuse Parks system as the oldest and largest park in Syracuse and dates back into the 1930’s. The park is lined with Saucer Magnolia trees that blossom in early spring providing a breathtaking view. Lakeside Park features the Ken Harkless Gazebo, a picnic pavilion, playground and swimming beach.

Syracuse Community Center – The community center is located at 1013 N. Long Dr. across from Lakeside Park. Since opening in the summer of 2002, the Syracuse Community Center has become home to many Syracuse special events, as well as daily use for young and old alike. The community center houses a computer lab, fitness room, senior citizen area, gymnasium, and additional rooms are available to rent for meetings and other events.
