They have been married 63 years.

In 1956, the couple met on a blind date and played a few rounds of miniature golf with two other couples. They seemed to hit it off and so they continued to see one another.

Eventually Dale asked Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father for permission to marry her and the couple married in 1957. Their ďŹ rst

daughter was born in 1958 and a second daughter four years later.

Dale worked in a tool and die job for 47 or 48 years. In his four years in the Navy, he grew to enjoy working in the machine shop. Lee had a few different jobs working as a bookkeeper, with Penn-Harris-Madison schools and as a cake decorator.

They both lived in the Mishawaka and South Bend area before moving to Granger for more than 50 years.

Now they reside at the Primrose Retirement Community in Mishawaka.

The move was a difďŹ cult one for Dale after living in the same home for more than 50 years. However,

they both enjoy the view and scenery from their current residence.

Daleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retirement was also an adjustment for the couple since he was home all the time. Without a hobby, he felt lost, so Lee helped him by giving him duties at home. He would also go out and do the yard work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Between us we get the job done,â&#x20AC;? Lee stressed.

While the Utterbacks have had their ups and downs and experienced their hard times like everyone, Lee commented dealing with it together has never been hard. Early on in their relationship, they made the decision together to never get

into debt over their heads, meaning credit cards were hardly ever used.

They believe this agreement has helped them to avoid some ďŹ nancial stress. Lee also credits Daleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother with training him well so Lee doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to pick up after him.

The couple complements each other well. While Dale is more reserved, Lee is sociable and outgoing. Since at Primrose she has started doing watercolors and has joined a group of ladies who crochet for St. Margaretâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and hats for babies. The park welcomes campers, boaters, hikers, bird watchers, bikers, anglers, equestrians and many others seeking to commune with nature. Providing a safe environment for the estimated 750,000 visitors a year, who

take part in one or all these outdoor adventures, takes coordinated management.

Jim Webb, a 41-year veteran of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, is the person in charge of park management at Potato Creek. He was born and raised in South Bend. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started my career back in 1979 at Potato Creek on the Young Adult Conservation Corporation program,â&#x20AC;? Webb said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I literally initiated my career

from the bottom up because, on my ďŹ rst day, we set cross-country ski trails in which a track setter is used to make tracks in the snow. I was asked to ride on the track setter for weight.â&#x20AC;?

While at Potato Creek in his early career, Webb did many of the jobs for which he hires qualiďŹ ed people to do today.

That included seasonal labor, salaried staff and wastewater management. He moved on in his career to property manage-

ment roles at Shakamak State Park and McCormickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Creek State Park, before he returned to Potato Creek in 1996 as the property manager.

Property managers have a lot of responsibilities. Potato Creek is almost 4,000 acres. Webbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s duties include overseeing the buildings and facilities, such as the boat rental station, campgrounds, the beach, the nature center, the wastewater plant, waterlines, sewer lines, roads and the park ofďŹ ce among others. He manages nine fulltime staff and about 50 to 60 seasonal hires.

In a for-proďŹ t business, the day-to-day operations would not be affected by weather events. Not so in the park management business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my humble opinion, weather deďŹ nitely has a major inďŹ&#x201A;uence on the property,â&#x20AC;?

Webb said.

When the weather is nice, he can expect more visitors.

When the weather is miserable, attendance in the park will be down. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have actually watched the sun come out and drew folks out as well,â&#x20AC;? Webb said.

Extreme weather can also cause more work for the park staff. Trails have been ďŹ&#x201A;ooded

after heavy rains, high winds knock down trees and other severe weather cause other issues that must be addressed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I ďŹ nd that within challenges, there are opportunities, which can lead to successes,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Webb said he enjoys the variety of duties as park property manager, as well as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the people â&#x20AC;&#x201D; both park visitors and staff â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and the desire and commitment of our Indiana state park team to bleed green.â&#x20AC;?

In other words, he said, the commitment and professionalism one ďŹ nds throughout all of Indiana State parks.

He has seen a lot of changes and improvements in his tenure. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Too many to name,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to throw something new at the seasoned property manager, but COVID-19 was a new experience for Webb.

Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state parks did not shut down and for many people provided a respite from quarantine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While many folks are absorbing the negative effects of COVID 19, we are managing a surge in use and an inďŹ&#x201A;ux of nontraditional ethnic groups, which we are grateful for,â&#x20AC;?

The second-most famous smile Though you may not know it, Harvey Ball has had an impact on your life.

Harvey Ross Ball was born in %\ 5$1'$/ July 1921 in & +,// Worcester, Mass., one of six children. After graduating from Worcester South High School, he became an apprentice to a local sign painter and later studied fine art at the Worcester Art Mu-

seum School. Following World War II, he worked for a local advertising firm until 1959, when he started his own advertising business.

In 1963, a phone call from a Worcester client, The State Mutual Life Assurance Company, changed Ball’s life — and in time added to the popular culture of America and many countries around the globe. The insurance outfit had recently experienced a hostile takeover merger with an out-of-town competitor and employee morale was low and sinking lower. Could Ball come up with

some kind of quirky design that would be fun to look at and consequently lift spirits around the office?

Ten minutes later, he had created a bright yellow circle with black oval eyes, with the one on the right slightly larger than the one on the left and a creased, slightly off-center smile, the right side being a bit higher and a bit thicker than on the left. Ball was paid $45 — about $350 today — for his efforts.

Making the move to assisted living Marcia S. had recently been diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis and congestive heart failure and it landed Marcia in the hospital several times this summer. Marcia and her family knew that it was time to start looking into different options.

Marcia was living at home with her daughter and son-inlaw, who were both working full-time, and she didn’t feel

comfortable being home alone anymore.

She was having trouble taking her medications properly.

“I really like it here so far, everyone’s so friendly, and the fried chicken is excellent,” said Marcia.

She continues to make new friends, get involved in activities and she continues enjoying life.

She said, “I know I’m in good hands and I’m very excited.”

Smiley buttons later became so popular with the general public that they were eventually being ordered in lots of 10,000 each. By 1971, more than 50 million smiley buttons had been produced.

Ball’s creation had become recognized around the world as an American icon.

So was Ball able to retire early, purchase a yacht and sail off to retire in a beachfront villa on a tropical island? Well, actually, no. He never applied for a trademark or a copyright of the smiley Face and State Mutual made nothing from the design either. Ball’s son, Charles, always maintained that his dad never regretted not registering the copyright. Charles Ball claimed that Harvey Ball wasn’t motivated much

by money.

Ball did, however, have an incentive other than cash. In 1999, he founded the World Smile Foundation, a nonprofit charitable trust that supports children’s causes. The outfit now licenses smileys and runs World Smile Day, an event celebrated on the first Friday in October each year. It’s a day that emphasizes the slogans “Do an act of kindness” and “Help one person smile.” Harvey’s smiley is now said to incorporate the most famous grin since the Mona Lisa’s.

Footnote: When the Vietnam War was raging during the 1970s, businessmen brothers Bernard and Murray Spain decided to make buttons displaying Ball’s creation, but added “Have a Nice Day” on each disc. The Spains raked in a healthy profit with sales of 50 million discs.

put together a puzzle. However, Dale also enjoys word puzzles and games to keep his mind going. For a Christmas present, Lee and their daughters bought Dale the sports channel. When Lee shows Dale her watercolors, he commented they are “always good.”

The Utterbacks believe going to church has helped to keep them grounded in their marriage. They were raised in a similar way and it has helped them to keep their heads on

straight and walk the same path.

Blessed over and over again, particularly health wise, Lee believes it to be extremely important to keep your family close and stay connected with them in whatever way possible, even simply sending riddles back and forth. Throughout Dale’s two open heart surgeries, she remained an encourager and morale booster for him.

How else have they lasted 63 years? “We can laugh at most anything,” Lee revealed.

Mangus advocates for seniors in the guardianship program %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering is realizing how much you are helping another person and that, with you, they likely would not be receiving that help. That is one reason why Christy Mangus is now in her ďŹ fth year volunteering as a guardianship advocate through the Adult Guardianship Services program at REAL Services.

After her kids had left

home and gone off to college, Mangus was looking for a way to volunteer and get more involved in the community.

She saw an ad for the Elves for Elders program through REAL Services and signed up.

However, when she spoke to Allen Holt, then the manager of volunteer services, he mentioned there was a signiďŹ cant need for volunteers in the guardianship program.

Information was sent to Mangus and, after completing her Elves for Elders volunteer

work, she entered the guardianship program in January 2016. She went through an interview process and background check. Afterward she stated she went through an excellent training process. Upon completion of training she was matched with a senior in the guardianship program, receiving a packet with the seniorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s information and background.

Volunteering only takes up four hours a month, which can be broken up whenever and however the volunteer wishes.

For Mangus, it was â&#x20AC;&#x153;something that could ďŹ t into my life,â&#x20AC;? she commented, as she still has a full-time job. The purpose of the program is to help vulnerable seniors navigate transitions and life decisions. When she would visit, Mangus would also ensure the seniorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs are being met and advocate for the best care possible for them.

Simply put, she stated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our job is to visit our people.â&#x20AC;?

Many times her visits would consist of bringing them a book, doing puzzles, watching their favorite show or just talking with them. One senior really enjoyed Wertherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mints, so she would bring them as a treat. When necessary she will also advocate and ďŹ ght for the seniorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights.

Currently Mangus is partnered with her fourth senior.

The last two have been at Healthwin and she has been very impressed with their facility, particularly recently during the pandemic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They went above and beyond all summer,â&#x20AC;? she mentioned, setting up safely distanced outdoor visits with the necessary precautions so she was still able to meet with her senior.

Lately her visits have been purely phone calls.

When she does lose a senior, Mangus is thankful for the support and time to grieve REAL Services offers.

Mangus works as an accounting manager at Southwestern Michigan College while living in Granger with her husband, Rodney, who works for Mariner Finance.

She moved to the area to study accounting at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. They have four children: MacKenzie (Daniel) Sahm, Emily Woods, Meredith Mangus and Matt Woods. The couple also adopted a rescue dog named Walter right before the pandemic.

Pre-pandemic they enjoyed traveling.

Most recently Mangus also completed the master gardener program through Purdue University extension.

Looming debt darkens outlook for federal retirement benefits %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Along with the usual emotional and economic hangovers that permeate our neighborhoods after celebrating Christmas and eggnogging in the New Year, along comes a dreadful and depressing pandemic ďŹ scal hangover this year.

The national debt has rocketed to unanticipated heights as a result of bailouts needed to help workers and businesses survive the lockdowns mandated around the country.

This puts unexpectedly heavy pressure on entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare, which were heading for trouble even before politicians closed things down in the war against the global virus.

Tossed aside by the winds of change produced by the pandemic is how to save these two beneďŹ ts that workers have supported all their lives â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and which they now need to support them as seniors.

Before the plague began

girdling the globe a year ago, concerned economic experts and government ofďŹ cials were predicting that Social Security beneďŹ ts would have to be cut by about 30% by 2030, at which time the 65 and over phalanx would account for some 20% of the population.

No one has even broached the subject since COVID-19 appeared on the scene.

Several trillions of dollars have been added to the national debt to fund emergency aid for the population.

To raise the money it spends, government has three sources of income: elected ofďŹ cials can (1) print more money, (2) raise taxes, and/ or (3) replace the money with more debt by selling bonds and other investments, such as Treasury bills.

Printing money out of the mint is a major prod for inďŹ&#x201A;ation, which lowers the worth of the tax dollars the government does collect.

Raising taxes is a timehonored method of increasing income. However, closures during the pandemic have driven thousands, if not mil-

lions, of small businesses out of business so they no longer are sources of tax revenue.

Comparable numbers of workers have lost their jobs and, similarly, have no income that can be taxed.

Bond sales have not been robust, since almost-zero interest rates have made them less than attractive investments.

When President Franklin D. Roosevelt launched the Social Security program in the late 1930s to beneďŹ t people 65 and older, the average life expectancy was 64 years. Today, the average worker lives 14 years longer than that, retires three years earlier than retirement age and spends 20 years in retirement.

According to Social Security records, there were 42 workers contributing to Social Security for each recipient in 1945. That ratio is now less than three workers per recipient. And the number of workers is dwindling, as the number of longer living retirees increases.

Building layers of flavor in meatless stew

A pot of hearty stew on the burner simmering for dinner

brings back great memories of time gone by when every meal was prepared from scratch.

This meatless stew is amazing and I promise you will not notice that there is no beef in the pot. It is just as satisfying as your momma use to make and with a little crusty bread on the side â&#x20AC;&#x201D; yum.

The recipe I found turned out delicious, but I am not totally fond of recipes that say 1 onion instead of ½ cup or better yet 85 grams. I like decisive mea-

surements, but with stew, if you chop everything about the same size it all works out in the pot. The way that this recipe builds ďŹ&#x201A;avors step after step assures the deep richness of the broth in the end. The ingredients are all the basics and, as I reviewed them, I found I had everything except the quantity of mushrooms needed. Total time was about 80 minutes, (if I had chopped my potatoes smaller it may have been less), which may seem long, but this is more than one meal and it is down-home tasty.

So just plan a time and enjoy making this hearty stew soon â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it will warm you to your toes.

(sliced) 8 ounce portobello mushrooms (sliced) 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 cup red wine (or broth, grape juice) (but the wine really adds a good ďŹ&#x201A;avor) 3 cups low sodium vegetable broth 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper 1 can diced tomatoes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; no salt added (15 ounce) 2 medium carrots (chopped) 2 ribs celery (chopped) 2 Yukon Gold potatoes (chopped) 1 can tomato sauce (8 ounce) 1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet (optional for color) (may sub with Soy Sauce or Worcestershire) 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon cornstarch (I ended up using 2 tablespoons, but start with 1) 1 cup frozen peas Instructions 1. Mince the carrot, celery stalk and small onion very ďŹ ne.

(I used a small food processor.)

2. Saute this mixture in 1/4 cup of veggie broth until the veggies are nice and soft.

3. Add the large chopped onion and continue cooking until softened.

4. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OK if the liquid gets a little low â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the brown bits add to the ďŹ&#x201A;avor.

5. Add the mushrooms and cook on medium high until they lose their liquid.

6. Season with the rosemary and Italian seasoning.

7. Add the wine and deglaze any brown spots in your pan.

(This is the good stuff.)

8. After a few minutes add the rest of the broth, the tomatoes and tomato sauce.

9. Add all your chopped veggies and turn the heat up to boil.

10. Add the rest of the seasonings â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but not the cornstarch.

11. Once itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boiling, turn down the heat to low and add the peas.

12. Mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water and stir this in to thicken.

13. Simmer to desired consistency.

Many happy returns buying food online I’ve missed doing a number of things this past year. I used to love going to the movies with my wife, going out to ,1 $ dinner with 1876+(// my wife and %\ ',&. going food :2/)6,( shopping without my wife. She is meticulous about what she buys and spends more time squeezing a melon then I spend picking out a new car. When I did go with her to a grocery store, she was judgmental about my choices.

No matter what I would sneak into the cart, she’d notice those items at the checkout. That’s when I would hear one of three things: 1: You’ll never eat that. We threw away the last two bags.

Return that to the shelf, please.

2: If you buy that horrible snack, you’ll just eat the whole thing and hate yourself. Let’s put that back in the candy

section.

3: There’s been a jar of that in the fridge for a year. Please, take it back.

Then I would have to go around the store, trying to find where things belong. After a while, the store personnel recognized what I was doing during each visit. Dang security cameras!

“Hi, Mr. Wolfsie. Doing a little reverse shopping again today? Not to be critical, but last week, we saw you cram some pop tarts on top of the energy bars. We found a dozen glazed donuts stuck in between the everything bagels and the seven-grain bread. Please don’t confuse the other husbands in the store who are lucky enough to be shopping alone.”

Mary Ellen is now doing all her food buying online. With the pandemic, she thinks this is a much safer approach, so I have been forbidden to wander around any stores on my own. This has drastically cut down on my intake of frozen pizza, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and barbeque potato chips. I watch Sesame Street now, just

so I can see someone eating a cookie.

The other day, it was time to purchase online from Kroger and I asked Mary Ellen if I could do the ordering myself, so I could be of some help with this weekly chore. “Okay, but please order exactly what I tell you. We have been eating much healthier lately because you are not tempted with impulse buying.” Mary Ellen then shouted her shopping list from the bathroom while she was drying her hair. I sat at the keyboard entering the specific selections online. Later that day, I picked up the order.

Mary Ellen was not happy.

“Let’s see, I said macaroni; you got bologna. I asked for guacamole; you got cannoli.

We needed noodles, you bought strudel. In the morning, there will be no coffee, but plenty of toffee. Finally, dinner tonight will not be low-fat turkey, but a bag of beef jerky.”

I told Mary Ellen I had not done this on purpose — that I had simply forgotten to put in my hearing aids and I must have misunderstood her.

“Okay, but I am proud of you for getting the organic broccoli, just as I requested. Did you get

it because it is so nutritious?”

“No, because it doesn’t rhyme with anything.”

Spotting the signs: loneliness and isolation in older adults (NewsUSA) While the holiday season can be a busy and hectic time for many, it presents the perfect opportunity to reconnect with family and friends. But with the presence of COVID-19, holiday plans may look different this year as many families host virtual celebrations or small gatherings with increased safety measures.

Regardless of how the holidays are celebrated, they are still an ideal time to check in on the health and well-being of older loved ones, especially during this particularly isolating time. Even though many of us may not see our loved ones in person over the holidays, virtual platforms are making it easier than ever to stay connected.

While not being able to come together to celebrate holidays and major life milestones isn’t new for 2020, the impacts of isolation and loneliness are still very real, particularly for the aging population. As social distancing remains necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19, many are feeling the effects on their physical and mental health. In fact, earlier this year more than half of older adults (56 percent) reported feeling isolated from others compared to 27 percent in 2018, according to the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging.

Subscriptions can be nasty issues. Just because you don’t read the recipes or do-ityourself projects that pile up in your mailbox doesn’t mean the charges stop. If you don’t cancel these subscriptions, the charges may mount in a joint account and demolish your credit rating.

Security problems can make this issue more complex.

Accounts may require you to identify yourself by providing the answer to a secret question, such as “name of our first pet.”

If you don’t know or remember the answer, uncluttering this problem can become a costly hurdle.

Then there are the calls to the insurance companies to collect death benefits, as well as to the deceased’s employer to manage death benefits.

Through all this, the survivors must deal with funeral details and memorial services.

At the same time, they have to search for the whereabouts of vital documents such as deeds, wills, estate plans, insurance policies, and membership and ownership papers.

If you haven’t yet prepared a to-do list after your death for members of the family, now is the time.

‘Your Song’ one of Elton John’s and Bernie Taupin’s hit songs Elton John It was a magical moment for Elton John and Bernie Taupin when they fully realized the %\ 5$1'$/ potential & +,// that had blossomed $ %RRPHU %ODVW 7R 7KH 3DVW in their professional partnership.

As Taupin once explained, “ ‘Your Song’ was one of the first songs we wrote when we really got locked into writing and when we had really honed our craft.” And it all began one morning in 1969 at John’s parents’ London apartment, when Taupin scribbled the words to the future classic on a grubby sheet of lined exercise paper that had tea stains on it.

At one time, Reginald Dwight — born in London in 1947 — was just another piano-playing teenager hungry for a showbiz break. By the mid-1960s, he and some pals were jamming in a band called Bluesology. Included among the musicians were sax player Elton Dean and singer John Baldry — the inspiration for Dwight’s future stage monicker.

Dwight eventually left the group and later answered an ad from London’s Liberty Records, which had announced auditions for songwriters. He

After that, John included “Your Song” in virtually every live concert of his career.

When asked to explain the work that led to acclaim for the pair, Taupin answers in fewer than a dozen wellchosen words: “It is a simple, naïve song. And it still stands up.”

wasn’t hired — Dwight could easily create melodies but choked when it came to writing lyrics. On that fateful day in Liberty’s office, though, he met another creative hopeful, 17-year-old Bernie Taupin. A school dropout farm worker without music-making skills, he could write poetry — and song lyrics — thanks to constant encouragement from his literature-loving mother.

Now calling himself Elton John, he and Taupin began working together, with Taupin penning sets of lyrics and John creating piano melodies appropriate to the words.

If nothing came to fruition within a few minutes, John would summarily toss Taupin’s attempt into the trash and move on to the next offering.

The duo employed this unorthodox way of working throughout most of John’s remarkable career.

John remembers his reaction when he first considered the words to “Your Song:” “I sat down at the piano and looked at it, going, ‘Oh, my God, this is such a great lyric, I can’t (mess) this one up.’ It came out in about 20 minutes and when I was done, I called

him in. And we both knew.”

Taupin had never been in love or even in any meaningful relationship, so his “Your Song” lyrics reflected a refreshing innocence about such a heady experience: “I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words” “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”

John eventually signed with Britain’s DJM Records label and in 1969 recorded the LP Empty Sky. It went nowhere, but his second album, John, the next year featured “Your Song” and thus held the key to success.

by Elizabeth Barrett Browning suggests a lengthy list of affirming love. Of course, most commonly we think of saying those three little words — I love you. But then, there are so many ways of expressing love for those we care about the most.

For almost a year now, those gestures of love have looked somewhat different, but just as genuine. The measures in place to protect and keep residents safe can feel depressing and discouraging. Social distancing has created a new level of feeling stuck and isolated for seniors, especially for those living in a senior community or facility. Those protective measures are in fact caring actions of love and concern.

Throughout the pandemic, St. Paul’s has encouraged more family phone calls, letter writing, sending birthday and holiday cards, sharing photos, window visits and using newer methods, like Facetime and Skype, to keep families and residents connected. Nothing can replace human connection and personal interaction. However, these small acts of communication can help combat the feelings of loneliness with expression of love and concern.

Now is the time to focus on what we are doing and can do more of going forward to keep seniors connected and uplifted.

When we reach out to others, who may be even more isolated than we are, it is psychologically healing and calming. As the Bible instructs us in Colossians 3:14 — “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

With February being the

month focused on love and sweet gestures, we are asking for words of encouragement, prayers, cards and letters to read and share with our residents all month. residents had no idea how much rent they were paying.

They said their children were taking care of their bills. There wasn’t even a glimmer of thought given to whether they or their children could afford the cost.

He said he made sure he knew what he was paying for and how much and that his kids knew, too. Before he and his wife made their move, they had their house appraised to get some idea of its selling price, reviewed their savings and retirement income packages, and met with their tax preparer to discuss various plans and proposals for their financial future.

Then they met with their children. All three of them.

There never is a right or wrong time to discuss your prospects and plans with your family. But it should be done. Then they will be better prepared for any circumstances that may arise.

If you’re fiscally secure, that will eliminate any concerns they may have regarding your welfare as you age. However, if your financial future looks slim, you have to let them know you may need their help.

It won’t do any of you any good to ignore such a situation. Nor should you be ashamed to bring it up. You did, after all, raise and support them as best you could as they were growing up. Facing the fact gives everyone more time to prepare for what might, or might not, happen.

If you find you can comfortably afford whatever domicile you’re considering and the annual longterm care insurance premiums, you can explain things as simply as that.

Doing the arithmetic with those numbers may produce a sum that could plant visions of luxurious living in the minds of some members of the family.

To reassure everyone (including yourself) that matters will be well managed, prepare a list of all your assets, bank and investment account numbers, contact names and phone numbers, and the location of supporting documents. Let your attorney or whoever you designate as caregiver know where that information is filed (a safety deposit box or computer or wherever).

Tell the rest of the family who that person is.

As you get older, and after you’ve already discussed your financial program and plans with family, you can from time to time outline and provide more details of your estate plans. You might even discuss how you’d like your remains and memorial service handled.

You can help keep your digestive system ďŹ&#x201A;exible by making this portion of your meal a bit of fun. Shop around for different colors in produce. They will brighten your plate as well as enhance your nutrition with an array of ďŹ&#x201A;avors, vitamins and minerals. And

the ďŹ ber in these plants helps scour out your digestive system.

The same goes for fruit. Some food experts suggest frozen fruit is a better choice than fresh because the frozen ones keep better and longer in the freezer without losing their nutritional value.

Jerry and Edie Ervin find support and strength through their faith When Edie and Jerry Ervin both happened to attend the same square dance one night, Edie commented, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We fell in love that night I think actually.â&#x20AC;?

After dating on and off for a few years, the couple ďŹ nally reconnected and married in 1963.

They were both in their senior year at different high schools 45 miles apart. Their ďŹ rst date was at Edieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sadie Hawkins dance and they later attended each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proms.

When they attended different colleges following high school, they continued to write. After no communication for a year and a half, Edie wrote to Jerry telling him how she felt. Jerry told her to come up to Indiana to talk in person. She did and

he proposed that night.

Jerry was born and raised in a small town Christian church.

Edie was raised as a Methodist, though her mother had been raised as a Quaker. She also attended a small, Methodist junior college down south before reconnecting with Jerry.

Once they were married, Jerry stated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We decided our family would be raised in the church.â&#x20AC;? Throughout various moves from Lafayette to Marion and eventually to South Bend, the couple would go church shopping each time to ďŹ nd the right church for them and their two daughters.

Throughout the years, they have attended Methodist, Christian, Federated and congregational churches. Edie enjoyed the support they could help provide for the church

community and the support they would provide for them in return. In South Bend, the couple attended a small country church near their home until their daughters moved out.

Afterward, they attended Grace United Methodist Church.

Their faith has also helped them through the hard portions of life. Whether it was Edieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s misdiagnosis of lupus early in their marriage or Jerry switching jobs from Lafayette to South Bend or moving in a blizzard, Edie stressed, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Each time weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone through something like that, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brought us closer.â&#x20AC;?

Through their churches, the Ervins have also taken part in marriage groups. At their church in Lafayette, they were part of a marriage enrichment group. At their small country church in South Bend, they

Free public senior exercise classes on Facebook, YouTube help seniors stay fit (NewsUSA) When gym closures due to COVID-19 locked most seniors out of their exercise classes and daily workout routines this spring, they quickly began combing the internet for new strategies to stay fit. Today, many older adults have turned to options like the Silver&Fit program, which offers four free public workout classes daily on Facebook Live and YouTube.

The timing for the launch of the free senior exercise classes could not have been better, according to comments from participants: “Thank you for keeping us safe, healthy and sane during these tough times,” says Ethel G. “These classes have been life-saving,” Lee Ann D. commented.

“These classes are perfect!” says Teri S. “Every level is available.”

“Since the launch of our daily free public classes, we’ve received nearly 30,000 comments on how helpful the classes have been during the pandemic,” says Jaynie Bjornaraa, PhD., MPH, PT, and AVP of Digital Fitness Solutions with the Silver&Fit program.

Outside of the home, options such as retirement villages and senior apartments can provide a great deal of independence, particularly for those who are unable to age within their home. For those with specialized care needs that require higher-acuity care, alternatives such as nursing homes and memory care facilities are worth considering. However, none of these alternatives can provide the ďŹ&#x201A;exibility and affordability of home care. Home care keeps people in the safety of their own homes and offers services that span the spectrum of assistance for older adults -- from transportation and companionship to medication management and around-theclock care.

If your loved one requires specialized care -- whether rehabilitating from an injury or living with Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease or other dementias -- home care allows for a range of options to match your speciďŹ c needs. You can work with your provider to ďŹ gure out the right ďŹ t.

Sit down.

Now stand up.

There! Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just done a bit of exercise.

You can repeat this sit-stand in short bursts or extend it over a series of numbered times spread over the whole day.

To make this exercise more effective, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use your hands to help push yourself off the chair.

Hold your arms straight out in front of you and stand up slowly.

From that standing position, sit

down even more slowly.

This simple exercise strengthens the muscles that help you get in and out of your bathtub and your automobile.

While youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at your chair, there are several other exercises you can implement to strengthen your body and balance.

Start marching while sitting down. Lift up one foot at a time and swing our arms just as you would if marching down the avenue, whether in military style or a merry St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day parade.

Do it in sessions of a minute or two, or for 10 or 20 repetitions.

Now remember right here: do not do anything physical too quickly, nor for too long. If you have any qualms or queasiness about any form of exercise, discuss your condition and concerns with your family doctor.

Now back to your chair.

Clench your ďŹ sts and put them up as if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re protecting yourself. Then punch out at your pretended attacker one arm at a time. Do this for a few minutes.

Then turn and try punching at a pretended assailant who has moved to your side. Now the other side.

Or you can pretend to row a boat. Extend both arms as far as possible and pull your elbows back as far as they can go while squeezing your shoulder blades, just like rowing over the water.

You can add more strength by holding light weights (use cans of juice) while rowing. You can also use the weights for your punching exercise.

Between the upper-body moves, strengthen your legs by lifting each foot about six inches off the ďŹ&#x201A;oor and making circles: ďŹ rst clockwise, then, after a few repetitions, counterclockwise.

To strengthen your torso, if you feel up to it, you can do abdominal crunches while sitting. Lean back a bit and lift both knees until your feet are about six inches off the ďŹ&#x201A;oor. Hold that position for about half a minute or so.

Repeat a half dozen times.

Again, talk with your doctor before doing any form of exercise, but any and all of these sittingin-the-chair exercises can be done around the house at any time of day, as often as you like and for as long as you like.

Then go into the two outstanding theaters utilizing amazing state-of-the-art technology featuring holographic techniques combined with ghostly images and live action. This might even turn out to be the highlight of your trip.

Witness the 1860 presidential election as if it were happening today complete with TV coverage and campaign commercials of the candidates.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a room full of editorial cartoons that were as crude and sometimes vicious as those seen during the 2020 election.

The view of Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s law ofďŹ ce shows him concentrating in a law book while two sons play baseball with a broom and wadded paper. Another room offers a peek into a cabinet meeting complete with some of the members dozing while Lincoln attempts to make a point.

It covers just about every aspect of Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time in Washington and ends at Fordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theater April 14, 1865, where he and his wife, Mary, were relaxing and celebrating the end of the Civil War before his assassination. His body was returned to SpringďŹ eld by train along the same route he took to Washington four years earlier.

A few more blocks south is the Lincoln Home National Historic Site featuring the only home he ever owned. The four-block area is full of period homes. During summer months reenactors add life to the

neighborhood.

Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery houses the body of the president, his wife and three of their four sons and a number of statues in various poses. Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nose on a big bronze bust in front of the monument is shiny from rubbing by visitors from throughout the world.

A historical marker and a 100th birthday are signiďŹ cant events related to the South Bend Blue Sox taking place at The History Museum.

The Blue Sox was one of the original teams of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League; it was established in 1943.

In May, a historical marker will be placed near the site of the former Playland Park, an area now owned by Indiana University-South Bend. This marked the location where the South Bend Blue Sox played baseball from 1946 to 1954.

The History Museum was notiďŹ ed of the decision by the Indiana Historical Bureau, Division of the Indiana State Library.

A ceremony taking place at the site in May will commemorate the month the Blue Sox ďŹ rst played at Playland Park, following three seasons of play at Bendix Field.

IU South Bend Chancellor Susan Elrod said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;IU South Bend welcomes the forthcoming historical marker on our campus. It is a marker of important community collaborations, like the one with The History Museum, but also a marker of the rich history within the community of South Bend. Betsy Jochum, a member of the original South Bend Blue Sox, celebrates her 100th birthday Feb. 6. The History Museum will unveil a new display of her memorabilia in the exhibit â&#x20AC;&#x153;Polished in Public, Fierce on the Field: The AllAmerican Girls Professional Baseball League.â&#x20AC;?

South Bend Blue Sox score cards, photos from her personal collection and some of her Blue Sox gear will be featured in the new case. A drive-thru parade of cars is planned for her birthday Feb. 8. In addition, a video of well wishes for her is being created.

To help defray the cost of the marker, as well as to support improvements to the gallery that hosts the exhibit on the AAGPBL, the museum is accepting donations to the AAGPBL Historical Marker Fund.

The AAGPBL was formed in 1943 by Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley. With the entrance of the U.S. into World War II, Wrigley was apprehensive that major league baseball would suffer due to the number of players being drafted into the armed services. In establishing the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teams, he hoped that stadiums would remain full and public support of major league baseball would stay active.

At Wrigley Field, May 17, 1943, 60 women were chosen for the four teams that played during the ďŹ rst season. In years to come, 11 more teams

would be formed. The AAGPBL played 12 seasons of ball, giving over 600 women the chance to play professional sports.

In the mid-sized towns of the Midwest, there was signiďŹ cant support for the 15 AAGPBL teams, including the South Bend Blue Sox. The AAGPBL was immortalized in the ďŹ lm â&#x20AC;&#x153;A League of Their Own,â&#x20AC;? in 1992. Their story is told at the museum, which serves as the national repository for the AAGPBLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artifacts, photographs and documents. The museum houses the exhibit.

Uniforms, baseballs, gloves, photographs and a baseball signed by actors Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna, are some of these artifacts.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m.

Curator accepts historically priceless scrapbook 7H[W DQG SKRWRV E\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU It was a tough decision but it was time for this historically priceless 1930s scrapbook of Mrs. Otto (Ethel) Hittig to leave my personal collection and ďŹ nd a new and appropriate home.

And so it did as I met with Pete DeKever, cofounder of the soon-to-open Mishawaka Historical Museum in the 100 block of South Main Street.

Hittigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scrapbook is a wonderful and priceless journey back into the school years of 1935, â&#x20AC;&#x2122;36, â&#x20AC;&#x2122;37, â&#x20AC;&#x2122;38 and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;39. Her scrapbook has been donated to this museum with the understanding that it will not be relegated

to a dusty storage shelf but shared with the public, especially teachers, parents, students of school history and others.

This scrapbook contains many, many pages of PTA events, news clippings, old holiday party napkins and much more. Handwritten entries by old inkwell-type pens were made of what was provided at many PTA, Christmas and other events: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fruit salad, cocktails, lettuce and tomato salad, rolls and butter, creamed chicken and biscuits, mashed potatoes and buttered beets and ice cream, cookies and coffee.â&#x20AC;?

Throughout Hittigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scrapbook, coverage was made via news clippings, event programs, handwritten childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s invitations to their parents for various

Her ďŹ rst entry was made on Oct. 1, 1936, and dealt with the PTA meeting in LaPorte. Turning the fragile and brittle pages of this now 85-year-old scrapbook, we continue on with the entries of PTA meetings that involved representatives from Elkhart, St. Joseph, LaPorte and Marshall counties and the cities of Elkhart, South Bend, Mishawaka and Michigan City.

Some Mishawaka schools no longer exist, but Hittigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scrapbook brings to life the memories of Bingham, Bieger, Battell, LaSalle, Mishawaka High School, Roosevelt and Mary Phillips.

While enjoying my coffee and a soft drink with DeKever on that New Years Day 2020, I slyly suggested that Hittigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scrapbook contained enough school history to write yet another book as DeKever is wellknown for doing. Do I hear a community vote of â&#x20AC;&#x201D; yes?

This writerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support through artifact donations has been ongoing and will continue into the future. I encourage the public to also support this soon-to-open, nonproďŹ t historical museum through ďŹ nancial and/ or artifact donations.
