Much of what at is in the Porter County Museum in downtown Valparaiso is currently in boxes. But if you have the time, you can find plenty of information about and mementoes from local people in military service.

Right now, the museum has moved its displays to its nearby gallery. However, Asa Kerr, the museum’s collections manager, worked his way around the boxes to show pieces of personal and international history, all collected from local people

of military service who helped forge that history.

In pre-COVID days, the museum hosted a yearlong exhibit on World War I during the centennial anniversary of the war’s end in 2018. The museum also had a large WWII exhibit. Visitors to the museum might recall walking upstairs to be greeted by a Union cavalry officer’s uniform from the Civil War. The uniform is a reproduction, Kerr said, but parts of the uniform, including

the buckle, are authentic.

Another Civil War memento is a tree trunk supposedly cut from the battlefield at Chickamauga, Ga. Pieces of shrapnel are embedded in the trunk, as are pieces of a cannon ball.

Getting into the 20th century, Kerr noted the large number of gas and food rationing cards.

“People saved these cards, because they realized how important they were at the time,” Kerr said.

Valparaiso University became part of the WWII effort as it was transformed into a training base for soldiers. In addition to general education, Kerr said, the VU-based classes taught truck driving to future soldiers.

The VU program was called Student Army Training Corps. The officials hoped the government funding for the training would offset the lost revenue from international students, who could not cross

the ocean during th the war. VU faculty, Kerr said, sshifted their expertise from coll college to military life. Army bar barracks were llocated t d near th i of VU’s the site Chapel of the Resurrection.

The museum also has a huge collection of firearms donated by Broncho John. A former Army scout, he served in the Spanish-American War. After serving in Cuba, John put on a Buffalo Bill-type Wild West show, occasionally touring in Valparaiso.

Vietnam veteran, Purple Heart recipient works to help his community %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Dave Taborski of Gary is one of nine children, but he wasn’t the only one in his family to serve his country. All the boys in the family served in the military, covering three branches — Army, Air Force and Marines.

Taborski had planned to go into the Navy. It would have meant that each of the four brothers would have served in a different branch, but Taborski was drafted and served in the Army like his older brother.

Taborski served from 1968 to 1970. He was in the infantry in Vietnam and spent his last six months as a military instructor. He was wounded in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart. After he and his brother returned from Vietnam, a friend invited them to join VFW Chapter No. 8141, where he is a member.

In recent years, he has joined other veterans organizations and works toward fundraising for the groups with the funding going to help local veterans facing homelessness or in need of other assistance. A friend, also a Vietnam veteran, encouraged him to get involved in an area veterans group, which also led

In 2004, he got involved with the Disabled American Veterans Hammond Chapter No. 17. He currently is serving his second term as treasurer.

He is also the co-chairman of fundraising, working on organizing fundraising efforts at area stores where members take donations for the organization, recruiting volunteers, counting money and making deposits.

Taborski presently serves as state treasurer for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He is junior vice commander of Chapter No. 721 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Hammond, where he is also a past commander.

The organization is made up of all wounded veterans who received a Purple Heart.

“We support all military events and personnel, especially those who are Purple Heart recipients,” Taborski said.

The group also works on behalf of veterans eligible to receive a Purple Heart to help them get the medal they are entitled to.

He also serves his community by volunteering for the food pantry at St. Ann Church in Gary. He helps with sorting and stocking the shelves as donation deliveries arrive and directs parking at Continued on page 4

It is open enrollment time for seniors %\ :22'52: :,/&2; The open enrollment period for seniors on Medicare this year is Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

There are other open enrollment periods for the Affordable Care Act and other things. The one for seniors on Medicare refers to the time of the year in which seniors can switch from one Medicare part D plan or Medicare advantage plan to another starting the following January 1.

Medicare supplement policies can be changed any time of the year. It is only Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans) and Medicare Advantage plans that need to be switched during the open enrollment period.

There are a few exceptions to

this restriction. The exceptions accommodate very unusual circumstances over which a senior citizen on Medicare has no control.

So, if you have a Medicare advantage plan or a Medicare part D prescription drug plan, contact an insurance agent to get an appointment to review your options; your needs may have changed. Another company might offer better or more affordable plans. Once Dec. 7 has passed, you will not be able to consider making a change until the next year.

Retiree encourages volunteers to help prepare taxes %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU George Kuebler does not brag about it, but he failed college math. As someone who oversees volunteer tax preparers, he uses that to encourage others to consider volunteering.

For the past 13 years, Kuebler has been supervisor for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, sponsored

by United Way of Northwest Indiana. At 82, the Valparaiso

resident is the longest tenured and oldest United Way employee.

“We’re always looking for volunteers,” Kuebler said. “I’m delighted to talk to anyone about the program.”

VITA is a nationwide program offering free tax preparation service for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less. Internal Revenue Service-certified volunteers provide free tax return preparation to qualified persons.

Typically, Kuebler, said, VITA begins in February and continues through mid-April.

Although VITA operates four days a week from the United Way office in Valparaiso, volunteers choose their schedules.

The IRS offers online training and certification, and training is renewed annually.

“You’re helping someone. A lot of people are confused about taxes,” Kuebler said. “Most seniors have life skills they can apply to taxes.”

Kuebler’s background is in journalism. He worked 10 years at a newspaper in his native Ohio and 30 years in public relations with U.S. Steel.

“I deal with a lot of seniors,” he said, citing a retired music teacher who became a VITA volunteer. “A lot of seniors just happen to do volunteer work.”

For those still wary of tax work, Kuebler noted, “The software does the work. You input the data.”

Even with the pandemic in 2020, Kuebler said, VITA volunteers processed 525 federal returns and about 600 state returns. Pre-COVID, he noted, volunteers would process close to 800 returns.

Last year, Kuebler said, VITA had 13 volunteers. The pandemic reduced personal contact. Clients dropped off their paperwork with a volunteer, who spent about 10 minutes going over the information. The volunteer then

He is retired from the retail industry. He enjoys gardening and fishing, and golfs weekly with two other Vietnam veterans when the weather allows.

wounded veterans, Taborski suggests contacting the local chapter of DAV or Military Order of Purple Hearts and donating money that will be used locally to help veterans who might need assistance with rent, utilities or other needs. Also, keep an eye out at storefronts where members of these organizations are often taking donations.

A widower, Kuebler has three children and five grandchildren.

Former United Way President Sharon Kish talked him into tax work when he was volunteering at a Porter County homeless shelter.

Kuebler counsels seniors about filing what the IRS considers “frivolous” returns.

“If you don’t owe income taxes, you don’t have to file a tax form,” he said. “A lot of people think they always have to file. In the case of many elderly, no.”

If you don’t have an estate plan, the court will have to appoint someone to make your medical and financial decisions for you. The process can be very time-consuming, expensive and public, and can wreak havoc on a family if they disagree about who should be appointed and how decisions should be made.

Even if your means are modest, you should consider who gets your hard-earned assets when you die. If you have no plan, state law will decide who gets what, and many times the government’s best guess as to what you would have wanted is contrary to your own desires.

Church banners bring honor and glory to God %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU When Lois Prahlow calls Immanuel Lutheran Church in Valparaiso her family, she isn’t kidding. Her late husband, Augie, taught grades four through eight at the church school for 40 years, and her son is Immanuel’s youth minister.

As for Lois, she has served on several Bible classes, is a member of the church ladies group and now works with her church’s Compass program for immigrants learning English and pursuing citizenship.

Perhaps her most visible contribution to Immanuel can be found sticking to church walls. Her felt church banners come in various sizes, including those 12 feet across that hang in the church sanctuary.

Prahlow’s banners reflect not only her deep faith but also Scripture passages and religious seasons, including Lent and Advent. Those seasonal banners change as the season approaches its high point at Easter or Christmas.

Prahlow made one such large banner for Immanuel’s 150th anniversary in 2014.

The banner contains images from Jesus’ life, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection and as-

cension; and images reflecting the varied current ministries at Immanuel.

“There is not enough space to visually portray of all Immanuel’s agencies, which have participated in the Lord’s work these many years,” Prahlow noted. “We have indeed been blessed to be a blessing. Our times have been and will continue to be in [God’s] hands.”

She has been a member of Immanuel since 1959.

“These are my brothers and sisters in Christ. We have the opportunity to hear the word of God and do the assignment he’s given us: to make his love known,” she said.

Prahlow traces her creative interests to two events. Born in 1938, she grew up in Flint, Mich., where she entered the local newspaper contest for youngsters to submit poetry, stories and other works based on a theme.

The second event came after Prahlow began working on banners in the 1960s, doing only rectangular banners. After seeing a Hallmark Easter egg puzzle in 1993, she got the idea for more colorful banners to brighten Immanuel’s beige walls. Her son, Chris, asked about the possibility of round banners. His mother respond-

ed by using two half-circles 12 feet in length and put them together for one large circular banner.

Regardless of the shape or theme, Prahlow said the banners are about “bringing honor and glory to God and Jesus as our Savior.”

Her banners have hung at a Lutheran camp in Arcadia, Mich., Valparaiso University, and Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago. Since dorm rooms at the naval base are called ships, Prahlow dedicated her four banners to worship, fellowship, citizenship and leadership.

As to living her faith, Prahlow noted, “Faith is a relationship God has extended to me. The Bible is not an archaic book. It teaches me to know God’s story.”

Every morning, she went on, “I remember who I am under God. I ask God to help me grow to be the person he wants me to be — kind, gentle, joyful, patient.”

Prahlow cites 2 Peter 3:18: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him he glory both now and forever.”

“It means I can trust his grace, “ she said. “He’ll never leave me.”

Pickleball provides exercise, fun social activity for Munster man %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Randy Smith first played pickleball close to two years ago. He immediately knew it was something he wanted to incorporate into his life on a regular basis.

“For years I’ve been trying different things to stay in shape physically. Most of them worked for a while, such as riding my elliptical machine a few times a week, bicycle riding around the neighborhood or on a bike path or daily walking along an area path,” said Smith. “Walking was about the only thing I kept up with on a regular basis, as I still walk multiple times a week.

Weather was always a factor around here and when temperatures plummeted to below freezing I was always in search of things to do indoors.”

While walking on the indoor track at the Hammond SportsPlex, he noticed a poster about learning how to play pickleball.

“The first time I tried playing pickleball, I was at the Hammond SportsPlex on indoor courts in January,” he said.

“There were a number of people playing with different skill levels.

The instructor mixed us up with each other, so the beginners could learn from the ones who

had more experience. I used to play tennis and some racquetball years ago, so I think a lot of those skills made it easier for me to enjoy and be competitive in pickleball.”

Smith currently plays about five days a week, much of it outdoors in the warmer months.

“One of the other fun things about playing pickleball is the social aspect. I have played with various groups in Lansing, Ill., Munster, Highland and Griffith.

Most of the time, these groups are a mix of men and women, so everyone will usually have a different partner every game,” he explained. “It’s fun and competitive, but usually a very friendly and social atmosphere. It’s nice to be on the winning team, but at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter if I’ve won or lost more games, but just know I’ve had fun.”

The Munster resident competed for the first time last summer when a group he regularly plays with in Lansing had a tournament.

“It was a fun time, but I have to admit I was really trying to focus and concentrate on my play as it seemed this time it did matter how much I won and lost. Everybody seemed to have a good time. I was really surprised

when I found out I had won third place,” he said.

Smith likes that the sport is easy to learn and involves a lot of movement.

“But I don’t feel like I’m getting beat up physically,” Smith said.

“Almost anyone can enjoy playing after just a few lessons. Anyone who plays or has played tennis, racquetball or pingpong can pick up pickleball rather quickly.”

Smith is retired from his career as a prepress manager at a Chicago newspaper printing company. He enjoys boating on Lake Michigan and likes to travel and go on cruises. He and his wife, Susan, have three adult daughters, three adult stepchildren, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

“I have met so many nice people since I started playing pickleball and almost all of them are very enthusiastic about the sport. We joke about how we are addicted to it,” he said. “I just turned 70, but playing pickleball on a regular basis really gives me a sense of accomplishment and achievement I haven’t felt for years. I love the way pickleball has become so popular all across the country.”

Smith said he hopes he can continue to play pickleball for many years to come.

Let’s be clear: added sugar is the enemy

We have talked before about added sugar, and how much is too much, but it bears a recap. The FDA fails to buck the sugar industry with more than a “choose carbohydrates wisely” warning, but the American Heart Association does have guidelines, so let’s take a quick look at those.

Under the AHA’s sugar guidelines, children under age 2 should have no added sugar, and most American women and kids over age 2 should consume no more than 100 calories per day from added sugars, with the maximum for most American men being 150 daily calories. That means one can of soda could take us over the top for the entire day.

One hundred sugar calories is 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons and for men it is 36 grams, or 9 teaspoons of added sugar.

On the food nutrition panel it will list Total Sugar and under that it will say “includes xx grams added sugar” and that is per serving, so make sure to check the listed serving size as they can be very sneaky on what they consider a serving size compared to what we would consider a serving size.

Seventy-five percent of packaged food and drink contains added sugar and there are 98 cereals that exceed the daily recommended limit of added sugar, so be vigilant, because overconsumption of added sugar increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart disease and strokes.

High blood pressure is being diagnosed in children.

So, guess what the only thing is that all health researchers can agree on? Right, eat more fruits and vegetables — lots more. Remember Dr. Fuhrman’s GBOMBS – Greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds. At least a pound of vegetables both raw and cooked, always cook your mushrooms, 1 cup of beans/legumes, 1 ounce of seeds, 1 cup of starchy vegetable or grain, and fruit. Think about how many of these items you could add to a salad, or a nutrition bowl — both raw and cooked together.

As we near the end of fall, consider squash and homemade soups; you’ll want to keep these stocked up so you always have a go-to instead of turning to something processed. Plan to have whole or minimally processed foods — proudly be the one at the table who orders salad or a veggie wrap instead of a cheese-

United Way of Northwest Indiana marks official merger The United Way of Northwest Indiana had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 1 to mark the official merger of Lake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County.

For more than 50 years, the two United Ways have been serving northwest Indiana by supporting a vast network of health, education and financial stability programs to help residents in need get back on their feet.

“As our communities continue to grow and change, the lines between counties have started to blur. Many of our residents work in one county and live in another, so they have a vested interest in what happens in both,” said Jeff Strack, CEO of Strack & Van Til and the new board chairman of United Way of Northwest Indiana.

Gabis Arboretum offering fall programs Gabis Arboretum is offering classes, programs, hikes, tours and wellness activities this fall.

Letter to the editor COVID-19 vaccinations do work Dear Editor, President Joe Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci are doing a great job providing vaccinations to our nation’s people in order to not get COVID-19. There is an abundance of national proof the vaccines do work and are effective in people.

For example, if one gets the virus, despite being vaccinated twice, the sickness is a lot less severe than if one had not received the shots at all and most do not die. People forget that no vaccine is 100% proof against any

Hammond hosting Veterans Appreciation Day parade Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. is celebrating the city’s annual Veteran Appreciation Day parade. It will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in Hammond’s 5th and 6th districts. The parade route will travel from Olcott Avenue, down 173rd Street and end at Hessville Park Veterans Memorial.

Some of the parade participants include members of local American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, musical entertainment from area high school bands, military vehicles, Those Funny Little People and a flyover by the Lima Lima Flight Team.

The grand marshal for the parade this year will be SPC 4 Dan Spitale, U.S. Army. Spitale served in the Vietnam era and was drafted April Fool’s Day in 1968 in the biggest draft since World War II. Spitale did his basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky., and advance infantry training in the Tigerland section of Fort Polk, La. For 11 months,

Specialist Spitale served for two years and left the Army in June 1970. Upon arriving back in the United States, Spitale secured a position in the Inland Steel Power Plant where he worked for 31 years.

Dan has been a Realtor for over 35 years. He has been a member of the Hammond City Council, serving Hammond residents as council-at-large for the last 14 years.

Spitale has been married to his wife, Michelle, for over 40 years, and they have two adult children.

Portage Township YMCA to host ‘Turkey Trot’ The Portage Township YMCA will host its 21st annual Turkey Trot Thursday, Nov. 25.

The event is a competitive and professionally timed 5K walk. There will also be a free 1K “fun run” for children. Races begin at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving morning and typically wrap up with race awards by 11 a.m.

Race registration is through Sunday, Nov. 7, and people will be guaranteed a long-sleeved commemorative shirt and finisher medal.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, in 2020 the Portage Township YMCA was able to host its annual event, but it looked quite different than it had in years past.

“We had big plans for our 20th anniversary, but for the safety of everyone involved, we

had to do staggered start times.

We were unable to hold an in-person awards ceremony. It was still an amazing event, and we are so thankful to everyone who participated.

“For our 21st, though, we want to bring back the fun,” said Shannon Burhans, CEO. This year, the YMCA plans to return the event to as normal as possible, provided local, state and federal guidance permit it to do so.

“It took a lot of out-of-the-box thinking but we got it done,” said Britney Mendoza, healthy living coordinator. This year should be a breeze in the park for us. I am excited to bring back the tradition.”

The turkey trot has become a staple in the Portage community with racers coming from all over the region to participate for one cause. Proceeds from the race support the Portage

Township YMCA’s annual support campaign used to provide scholarships for families of all types and make membership and programming affordable for all.

Aside from being a gym, the YMCA also offers before- and after-school child care, preschool, free food program year round, cooking classes, and soon a blood pressure selfmonitoring class, in addition to other programming. As an added bonus, the race participants ages 4-plus can add on one of two trot squad training groups. Each group will meet weekly Saturday mornings beginning in October.

Often when people call me to look at their collections or estates, they are pleasantly surprised to learn that items they considered worthless are actually very valuable. From unwanted baby to medical doctor Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series. %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU We continue the story of the baby who was orphaned to St. Vincent’s Orphanage in Chicago back in August 1921, her biological mother apparently never known.

Betty, as she was known, had been enrolled in “Crown Point High School in the fall of 1935 and graduated with the class of 1939 as a top scholar.”

That same year, she enrolled in the University of Chicago and received a BS degree in 1943.

It was in high school that Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Davis met her sweetheart, Bill Carroll. Cupid was on the scene and ready to do his work. It was in her third year of medi-

cal school that Betty married Bill.

America was in the middle of World War II in 1943, “so she remained at the university as a lab instructor and got her masters degree in psychology in 1945.” In 1946, Mary was “accepted and enrolled in the University of Chicago Medical School.” At the time of their marriage, Bill was a law student at Indiana University.

After four years of medical school, Betty “graduated with the class of 1949 and received her M.D. degree.” Her medical training was not yet over and she did “a year’s internship at Passavant Memorial Hospital on the downtown campus of Northwest University.” It was in 1951 that Betty officially became a doctor; some calling her “Doctor Mary.”

There may be readers who remember Dr. Mary Davis Carroll as she came back to Crown

Point to practice medicine with doctors John P. Birdzell and Everett Steel at 124 South Main Street. Mary was active in too many organizations and activities to mention in this story. We should remember, of all events in her life, “she was a board certified family practitioner and her greatest pleasure and pride was in the many babies she delivered in her 45 years of practice in Crown Point, including babies of some of those babies.” She chose to retire on Dec. 31, 1995.

The sad news came to the community on the cold Sunday of Jan. 23, 2000, when Dr. Mary Carroll passed away. She would no longer be with those who may have bowled with her or played golf or bridge or the many sports she loved with her.

Skirting the issue of the miniskirts Miniskirts were not born, as many of us believe, during the UK youthquake (as it was called) of the fren%\ 5$1'$/ zied ’60s. & +,// Over the years, archeologists have unearthed short-skirted European figurines created between 5400 and 4700 BC. Some ancient Egyptian frescos have depicted female acrobats wearing them, as well. During the 20th century, the “flapper” era saw entertainer Josephine Baker shock Parisian audiences with a miniskirt made of bananas when she performed in the Folies Bergere.

Fifties’ sci-fi movies such as “Flight to Mars” and “Forbidden Planet” also featured the controversial clothing.

A decade later, Mexico City fashionistas were wearing skirts that stopped far above the knee.

Modern cultural historians, though, have given British fashion designer Mary Quant much of the credit for this worldwide clothing revolution. Since 1955, she and husband Alexander Plunkett Greene had operated Bazaar,

an upscale boutique in the Chelsea area of London. (Bazaar was one of only two such shops there that catered to the young). Quant initially offered the short dresses to allow wearers to run for city buses more quickly.

The term miniskirt was derived from Quant’s favorite British car, the popular Mini Cooper. (In 1988, Quant designed the interior of a limited-edition Mini. Of the 2,000 built, each featured black-and-white-striped seats with red trimming, red seatbelts and Quant’s signature on the driver’s and passenger’s seats. These rare vehicles have now become coveted collector’s items for certain nostalgia buffs).

By the ’60s, Chelsea was emerging as a place of beatnik joints, cellar music clubs and fashion shops. Young women who shopped there became known as Chelsea girls, and Quant was more than happy to outfit them in ribbed poorboy sweaters, fishnet gloves, patterned stockings and, due to increasing demand, coquettish miniskirts that measured up to 10 inches above the knee. Quant’s skirts were often worn with flat Mary Janes or zip-up kneehigh boots and thick, brightly colored tights.

Thanks to such fashion

icons as Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, miniskirts quickly captured the zeitgeist of ultra-hip London during the Beatle era, and before long the fashion trend surfed the slipstream of the British Invasion to seemingly become mandatory dress for ladies worldwide for years thereafter.

To its wearers, the miniskirt wasn’t only “groovy,” it also showed support for female liberation — something long overdue in the hearts of many.

Women’s movement pioneers such as Gloria Steinem and Marlo Thomas tacitly endorsed the skirts when they made public appearances in them.

The short-dress trend lasted throughout the remainder of the decade, thanks in part to Goldie Hawn. She prolonged the fashion fad as a pop-culture phenomenon on TV’s “Laugh-In,” with young women often embracing Hawn’s signature skirts.

The fashion world is ever changing, of course, and by the end of the ’60s hemlines fell to the ankles in a style dubbed the “maxi,” with skirt lengths becoming the longest since World War I. No problem for Quant, though; by then, she had created another fashion rage: short shorts. Or, as they came to be known, “hot pants.”

“Dispelling the misconceptions about Alzheimer’s disease is critically important, because they may cause people to ignore symptoms and delay taking action which impacts their health and quality of life,” said Charles J. While the majority of people who develop Alzheimer’s disease are over the age of 65, young-onset Alzheimer’s disease can affect people as young their 30s or 40s.

Memory problems at any age should be checked out.

•Nothing can be done for Alzheimer’s disease.

Although there is currently no cure or treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, people diagnosed with the disease can and often do, have meaningful, active lives. It wasn’t all that long ago that grandpa would wander off daily until the day he didn’t return and the family had to go search for him — or his body — in “the back 40.”

Senior-living communities, nursing homes, assisted living complexes and an array of other names applied to facilities geared to accommodate oldsters who needed time and touching as they faded away have expanded into a lucrative economic enterprise.

This enabled more people to die at home instead of in a hospital.

Families still had to make the heart-wrenching decision on when and whether or not to move their parent or sib-

ling into a “nursing home.”

The eventuality still exists, but the hospice care industry is offering some stopgaps.

They offer caregivers who visit your home to help caregivers get some sleep and time to themselves.

Hospice care operators also provide an array of services that supplant the need for hospital stays.

There also are several nonprofit organizations that offer invaluable backup assistance when hospice care is necessary. They offer counseling, hospital beds, walkers, transportation, community activities and many other supportive services that ease the patient’s suffering and the caregiver’s burden.

There’s no simple or easy answer to whether or not your aging loved one should move into a nursing home.

If the caregiver has to be at work every day and the senior gets feeling lonely, they

may be much better off in an assisted living community where they can mingle with other people and make new friends.

Should making a decision appear impossible because of stubbornness or guilt or uncertainty by any of the people involved, visit a few facilities in the area and discuss their services with your doctor. You might also consult a social worker or a representative of one of the nonprofit organizations you’ve encountered.

When you’ve moved someone into a senior living facility, don’t just leave them there. Visit them regularly just as you would if they still lived in the family home.

This helps make them feel at home in their new home.

It also gives you the opportunity to keep an eye on their health, happiness and how well they’re being taken care of.

about the same number as those caused by cancer, respiratory disease and accidents combined.

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense. Most start slowly with some sort of discomfort and can be survived if recognized for what they are.

Fortunately, 90% of the people

who suffer a heart attack survive the event.

Recognizing the signs early is a major factor.

Most heart attacks start with a minor pain, discomfort or tightness in the center of the chest that just won’t go away.

If it does dissipate, it returns

with any of the above is volunteering.

This allows oldsters to funnel knowledge and training acquired over the decades into pursuits they enjoy — teaching kids how to paint, reading to blind seniors, organizing neighborhood groups into orchestras, working with law enforcement agencies to fight schemers who defraud the elderly, or leading small groups on wildlife outings.

The range is limitless, since there is a wide variety of organizations that could not offer many of their services without the aid of volunteers.

Think more than just Red Cross, Goodwill and your local church as needing your service

and support. There are law enforcement agencies, libraries, museums and retirement homes that welcome volunteers for an array of duties.

Helping prepare meals, organizing first aid supplies, stacking books and taking shopping trips are a short list of the many things you can do to occupy yourself and assist others. You can also travel, if you wish, to teach children in another land or make missionary tours.

You can stay close to home and deliver Meals on Wheels or head for a strange land to help build housing with Habitat for Humanity.

Before making any move, you have to decide just what moves you. Who or what interests you? Do you wish to work with children, animals or land conservation? What skills do you have to offer? Some organizations will help you learn what you think interests you.

How much time can you spend on your volunteer work?

How much can your health and stamina stand?

Check the local chamber of commerce and your local library for lists of local and global organizations that work with volunteers.

If a friend or family member works as a volunteer, or when considering an organization that utilizes volunteers, spend some time with them to see if it’s a fit.

There are those who spend much of their days on the golf course. Others develop a mixologist’s talents and sip their creations while watching the surf slurp the sunbathed seashore.

A few take on long-awaited second careers and open up antique shops or turn their art work to commercial advantage.

They also can build in your pillow so you should change it every couple of years. Or use two pillows and alternate them every month or so.

Poking into the Past:

The king of defense attorneys %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Cable news programs and social media have made celebrities of a dozen or so attorneys arguing their cases before the nation, but there’s little doubt many still bow to the dean of defense lawyers, Clarence Seward Darrow.

Born April 18, 1857, in the small northern Ohio town of Farmdale, Darrow rose to fame and prominence early in the 20th century for his defense in highly publicized trials. Called a sophisticated country lawyer, his wit and eloquence made him one of the most prominent attorneys and civil libertarians in the nation.

One of the more memorable events of his life is recorded in the movie, “Inherit the Wind,” a film detailing the Scopes “Monkey Trial” pitting actors Spencer Tracy and Fredric March against each other. It’s a record of teacher John T. Scopes 1925 trial in which Darrow opposed noted statesman, presidential candidate and orator William Jennings Bryan.

Throughout his career, Darrow devoted himself to opposing the death penalty, which he felt to be in conflict with humanitarian progress.

In more than 100 cases, Darrow only lost one murder case in Chicago. He became renowned for moving juries and even judges to tears with

his eloquence. Chicago newspapers labeled the Leopold and Loeb case the “Trial of the Century.”

Darrow moved into the national public eye in 1924 when he defended teenage thrill killers Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb for murdering 14-year-old Robert “Bobby” Franks.

The teenagers made full confessions and took police on a hunt around Chicago to collect the evidence that would be used against them. The state’s attorney told the press he had a “hanging case” for sure.

Darrow stunned the prosecution when his clients pleaded guilty, placing the case before a judge to avoid a vengeanceminded jury,

Darrow’s closing argument lasted 12 hours. He repeatedly stressed the ages of the “boys,” noting that “never had there been a case in Chicago where, on a plea of guilty, a boy under 21 had been sentenced to death.” Leopold and Loeb were each sentenced to life in prison plus 99 years.

Darrow argued emotion is necessary for the decisions people make. When someone tries to go against a certain forbidden law or custom, the accused should feel a sense of revulsion. Darrow concluded that neither Leopold nor Loeb had a working emotional system as they did not feel “revolted.”

During the trial, the newspapers claimed Darrow was

presenting a “million-dollar defense” for the two wealthy families. Many ordinary Americans were angered at his apparent greed. He had the two families issue a statement insisting that there would be no large legal fees and that compensation would be determined by the Chicago Bar Association.

After trial, Darrow suggested $200,000 would be reasonable. After lengthy negotiations with the defendants’ families, he ended up, after expenses, getting $30,000, about $380,000 in today’s money.

The king Continued from page 18 probably his most famous trial. The term “Scopes Monkey Trial” was popularized by noted newspaperman H.L. Mencken of the Baltimore Sun. The substitute high school teacher was charged with teaching evolution in a public school against state law.

The trial began as a publicity stunt and was staged deliberately to bring publicity to the question the credibility of Darwin’s theory of evolution. It tested Tennessee’s newly passed Butler Act, which forbade the teaching of evolution in any state-funded educational establishment.

More broadly, it outlawed the teaching of “any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation as taught in the Bible.”

During the trial, Darrow re-

quested that prosecuting attorney Bryan be called to the stand as an expert witness on the Bible. Bryan agreed. The popular media at the time portrayed Darrow’s grilling of Bryan as the deciding factor that turned public opinion in favor of the teacher.

After about two hours, Judge John T. Raulston cut Darrow’s questioning short and, on the following morning, ordered the whole session be expunged from the record because Bryan’s testimony that “every word in the Bible was to be believed” had no bearing on whether Scopes was guilty of teaching the controversial subject.

Despite Darrow’s highly publicized defense, what most people don’t remember is the jury took less than 10 minutes to find Scopes guilty

and he was ordered to pay the minimum fine of $100.

A year later, the Tennessee Supreme Court reversed Raulston’s decision on a procedural technicality, but not on constitutional grounds, as Darrow had hoped. The Tennessee high court dismissed the case, commenting “nothing is to be gained by prolonging the life of this bizarre case.”

The event became popularized in a play based on the trial and the 1960 film, “Inherit the Wind.”

Today, Darrow is remembered for his reputation as a fierce litigator and is generally regarded as one of the greatest criminal defense lawyers in American history.

He died March 13, 1938, of pulmonary heart disease and is buried in Chicago.

Sacajawea, the mother of our nation %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A 16-year-old Native American who helped lead the first transcontinental expedition up the Missouri River to the Pacific coast to explore the so-called Louisiana Purchase of 1803 could arguably be called the mother of our nation.

The title First Woman of America has some traction because her image is one of only two females ever placed on U.S. currency.

She is the bilingual Sacajawea, born a Lemhi Shoshone in May 1788 in Idaho. She was 16 when she met and helped Capt. Meriwether Lewis and Lt. William Clark explore the far reaches of the Louisiana Territory in 1804-05.

Lewis and Clark’s 45-member Corps of Discovery arrived at a Mandan village in what today is North Dakota. Knowing they would need the help of Shoshone tribes who lived at the headwaters of the Missouri River, they hired fur trapper Toussaint Charbonneau as a guide after learning his wife, Sacajawea, spoke Shoshone.

She was pregnant with her first child.

Lewis recorded the birth of her son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau on Feb. 11, 1805. By August of that year, the expedition had located a Shoshone tribe and were trading for horses when they discovered the tribe’s chief was Sacajawea’s brother.

When Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean, all members of the expedition, including Sacajawea and Clark’s black manservant, York, voted

on the location for building their winter fort.

On the return trip, Sacajawea advised Clark to cross into the Yellowstone River basin at what is now known as Bozeman Pass. This was chosen later as the best route for the Northern Pacific Railway to cross the continental divide.

In 1809, Charbonneau and Sacajawea accepted Clark’s invitation to settle in St. Louis. In 1813, the couple entrusted Jean Baptiste’s education to Clark, who enrolled the young man in the St. Louis Academy boarding school.

Jean Baptiste shares the spotlight with his mother on the U.S. 2000 “golden dollar” coin.

On that coin, he’s the infant depicted on Sacajawea’s back.

Some historical documents suggest Sacajawea died in 1812 of an unknown sickness, but Native American oral histories have her crossing the Great Plains after leaving her husband and marrying into a Comanche tribe. She was said to have returned to the Shoshone in 1860 in Wyoming.

In 1925, Dr. Charles Eastman, a Dakota Sioux physician, was hired by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to locate Sacajawea’s remains. He learned of a Shoshone woman at the Wind River Reservation with the Comanche name of Porivo.

Some of those he interviewed said she spoke of a long journey wherein she had helped white men. She possessed a silver Jefferson Peace Medal from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A Comanche woman named Tacutine told Eastman that Porivo was her grandmother.

According to the interviews, Porivo lived for some time at Fort Bridger, Wyo., with her sons Bazil and Baptiste.

Eventually, she returned to the Lemhi Shoshone at the Wind River Reservation where she was recorded as “Bazil’s mother.” Porivo is believed to have died April 9, 1884.

Eastman concluded that Porivo was, indeed, Sacajawea.

On the basis of this claim a monument to “Sacajawea of the Shoshonis” was erected in 1963 at Fort Washakie on the Wind River reservation near Lander, Wyo. The belief that Sacajawea lived to old age in Wyoming was widely disseminated through the book “Sacajawea” (1933) by historian Grace Raymond Hebard, a University of Wyoming professor. However, some critics have concluded “Hebard was long on romance and short on facts.”

Big, powerful monsters displayed at Butler museum They’re big … huge, in fact!

They’re powerful and colorful. They’re monsters … monster trucks, that is! And you *5($7 can view (6&$3(6 them and 3KRWRV DQG 7H[W learn all %\ 52' .,1* about the monster truck phenomenon at the Monster Truck Museum in Butler.

You may have seen monster trucks on television racing around a track, jumping over mounds of dirt and crashing down on a line of old cars. But when standing next to the fivefoot-six-inch-tall tires weighing 800 pounds and costing $2,000 to $5,000 each, one really can’t help but be impressed with their sheer size. The driver sits in a cab that’s almost as tall as the floor of a second story house and he has to get in by climbing up the massive treads on the tires.

The museum, which spent the first 10 years of its existence at the Kruse Plaza in Auburn, moved into the former Butler Eagles Lodge in late 2020 and held its grand opening in May. The seven rotating monsters

in the collection, along with a few other special vehicles, were transported up I-69 to Butler last November in an eye-popping parade.

The most recent addition to the museum arrived in midAugust. It’s owned by Hull Brothers Racing of Champaign, Illinois, and is called Heavy Metal because it’s built on an M-4 Sherman tank chassis complete with tank tracks. Also on display is a jet-black truck built on an International Harvester Scout chassis by museum co-founder and president Jeff Cook as a promotion vehicle for the popular television series, “The Walking Dead.” Visitors can also see his 1977 Scout monster truck.

You’ll be greeted at the entrance by Chris Allen, the museum curator/tour guide and monster truck walking encyclopedia. He’ll not only explain the history of monster trucks, starting with big off-road trucks fitted out with tires from farm fertilizer equipment crushing cars, to the three stages of weights from 16,000 pounds down to a more manageable 12,000 pounds, to the evolution of suspension systems and fourwheel steering.

to do wheelies, make tighter turns and do more free-styling moves, which made for much more exciting racing. Television coverage brought the sport to a much wider audience and started to garner an enthusiastic following.

Back in 2009 Cook, whose real job is building fire engines, and a friend took their monster trucks on the road to auto shows and events. One such event was at the Kruse Plaza in Auburn.

Dean Kruse, owner of the plaza at the time, saw what a big attraction the monster trucks were and asked if Cook would like to display them permanently at the Auburn facility. In 2010 the Monster Truck Museum officially became a reality.

The following year the museum held it first Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The new facility has an entire wall of plaques honoring drivers, builders, promoters and announcers.

A new group will be inducted this month.

Two shows are planned for 2022, in September and May. The museum is located at the west edge of Butler on U.S. 6.

Deer Creek resident, WWII veteran turns 100 years old

%\ 0$5&,$ =(//(5 'LUHFWRU RI 6DOHV DQG 0DUNHWLQJ 5HVLGHQFHV DW 'HHU &UHHN Tony Zona may have reached 100 years of age, but resiliency keeps his humor going strong.

Zona, a former resident of Steger, Ill., for some 70 years now resides at Residences at Deer Creek Senior Living in Schererville. He just celebrated his 100th birthday.

His life is measured by many milestones, wonderful stories and a dedicated family. Zona and his sweetheart wife, Kathleen (Wetzel), married in 1942.

Until her passing in 2018, they had spent nearly 76 years together. Together, they raised three sons: Anthony (Tony), Jr., Terry and Timothy. He is revered as a devoted husband and father.

Resiliency is what carried Tony through World War II. He entered the Armed Forces in October 1942 and remained until Dec. 25, 1945. He was a U.S. Army staff sergeant, and an infantryman of the 96th Deadeye Division. He saw combat in the Philippines and was wounded

in Okinawa.

Zona is well decorated. His awards include a Purple Heart, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, Bronze Service Star, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. Zona was proud to be involved with The Purple Heart Organization of South Chicago Heights when it was in operation.

Life after the war also took resiliency as he became an entrepreneur. He founded Zona Corporation, where he served as owner and president for over 40 years Zona Corporation specialized in underground sewer construction. His family recalls how he was famous for his oneliners and how, at 100, he can still pull them out at just the right time.

and a gospel-tinged chorus, Cat’s hit offered an escape from the country’s malaise and a welcome to a world of tranquility and contentment via a metaphorical train ride.

Who wouldn’t want to be on such a conveyance?

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948 in London, the youngest child of a Greek father and a Swedish mother, he developed a love of music and took to playing the family’s grand piano. But at 15, intoxicated by the success of the Beatles, he switched to the guitar and started creating tunes.

Stevens set his heart on becoming a songwriter in the same vein as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. He signed a publishing deal at 17 with a London music company and cut several original demos (demonstration records), including the future Tremeloes hit, “Here Comes My Baby,” along with “The First Cut is the Deepest,” recorded later

by Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow. He changed his stage name to Cat Stevens, in part because a girlfriend claimed he had eyes like a cat. Also, he has said, he couldn’t imagine anyone going into a record store to ask for a Steven Demetre Georgiou album.

Never a standout student, Stevens later dropped out of

art college to become a velvetsuit-wearing teen idol who placed three rock singles high on the British record charts.

What followed for him was a schedule of personal appearances, recording sessions and an indulgence in the seductive (and often destructive) world of the rock star.

He contracted tuberculosis and landed in a London hospital for a yearlong recuperation. While taking stock of his life during that time, Stevens meditated, did yoga, became a vegetarian and considered different spiritual paths.

During his recovery, he composed numerous songs in an easygoing folk-pop style, his new works more intimate than the hard-edged rockers that had first brought him fame in the UK. “In the old days, I was more concerned with melody,” Stevens said later. “Now it’s what I have to say.”

“Peace Train” became a fan favorite, and for a while Stevens ended every concert with his beloved (and still relevant) anthem, which opened with unabated optimism: “Now I’ve been happy lately/Thinking about the good things to come “And I believe it could be/ Something good has begun.”

Out-of-the-ordinary is run-of-the-mill in Virginia %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV While barreling down a 90-degree embankment that slammed into a wall of mud and gravel-encased woods, my mind kept shouting, “You want me to go where?”

I was driving — or, more accurately, hanging on for dear life — to an all-terrain vehicle on what was described as a quiet tour of the Primland Hotel in Meadows of Dan, Va. I was reminded to take it easy on the turns as we heaved over rocks, dipped into ruts and stormed through muddy ravines. I had to keep reminding myself through the rushing adrenaline to relax my body, where none of my internal organs were where they were before we started out on this ride.

During the hour-long excursion, I managed to toss a glance at an occasional wild turkey, pheasant or deer and catch a glimpse of the magnificent countryside. Somehow, I was disappointed we didn’t see any of the black bears that sometimes show up.

Even when we got out onto a real road, the driving still felt treacherous. Dramamine helps assuage those prone to motion sickness over the winding hills and curves carved through mammoth overlooks scattered

around the 12,000-acre campus.

Primland is just shy of the size of Bermuda and a lot of driving is involved when you stay here. When you think you’ve arrived at Primland, you really haven’t. It’s six miles from the north gate to the lodge. It’s another seven miles to the south gate. Shuttles to the different activities felt like activities in themselves.

We were happy to be on our own two feet for a hike with naturalist Tim, who embellished our walk with explanations of the diversified flora and fauna.

And then it was time for archery. Followed by air-rifle shooting. And tomahawk throwing. Just like every hotel, right?

Channeling my inner Native American, I raised my bow and arrow and shot at the bulls eye.

Turns out I was a natural, hitting the target every time. Not so much with the air rifle. And my tomahawk throwing was a little rusty.

The list of things we didn’t do — fly fishing, clay shooting, disc golf, horseback riding, hunting, watersports, outdoor fitness track, and, of course, golf and tennis — was longer than those we did.

But I still felt I had earned my Signature Massage, continuing the Native American experience. Artifacts from the local Saura tribe abound and are con-

sidered sacred. Tribal elements of fire, water, air and earth are incorporated through hot stones, oils, scents and touch, followed by sipping tea from the Native American Tea Co. Before the massage, I was taken to a relaxation space through hallways decked in shades of turquoise and brown that represented a “drop of heaven” and anti-aging.

That night we went to the observatory for some stargazing. It was crystal clear and a very sophisticated telescope projected the stars onto a video in front of us. The full moon provided even more clarity.

All of Primland emphasizes a return to nature and we were surrounded by stars, planets, constellations and galaxies — including the Orion Nebula, a star-forming nebula approximately 1,300 light years from Earth — the Pleiades Open Star Cluster (also known as the Seven Sisters) and the showstopping Andromeda Galaxy (the closest and largest galaxy to the Milky Way, roughly 2.5 million light years away). We saw more than 1,000 stars on the screen, including the mere 150 visible to the naked eye.

There was so much to fathom.

For instance, in 4 to 6 billion years, the Milky Way may collide with Andromeda. But what’s to worry?
