Nearly everyone has muttered that off-handed phrase at least a 1,000 times, whether it be a true statement or not, in reference to tasks from mowing the lawn to telling your kids they need to clean up after themselves.

In the case of Woodlawn Hospital OB/GYN Dr. Geoffrey Cly, his “I’ve done that at least 1,000 times truly is a jaw-dropping accomplishment.

During the hospital’s monthly board of trustees meeting last Tuesday, Intuitive, the manufacturer of the da Vinci surgical system, presented Cly with an award recognizing his 1,000th robotic surgery.

Actually, by the time the award was presented, Cly had surpassed the 1,100 mark in number of surgeries performed using the system.

According to Intuitive, the da Vinci system was one of the first robotic-assisted, minimally-invasive surgical systems approved by the FDA. To date, the family of da Vinci technologies has been used by surgeons in all 50 U.S. states and 67 countries around the world to perform more than 8.5 million procedures.

Tuesday’s presentation was attended by many of the surgical staff who have assisted Cly in his robotic-surgery work, as well as Dr. Benjamin Adebayo, who also works in the gynecology and obstetrics at Woodlawn alongside Cly. Adebayo, who also is trained in the da Vinci robotic surgery technology, joked he was still several hundred surgeries in experience behind his colleague and mentor.

Ironically, Cly’s early-life ambition was not to go in to the medical field. In a recent interview, he admitted his early intention was to do something very different.

He entered the University of Dayton as an undergraduate prelaw student and recalled he was sitting in a biology class that was a required course for all students when he watched a video about childbirth. When the video concluded, Cly said he knew delivering babies

was what he wanted to do with his life. He said he called his mother after the class and told her of his career path divergence, then went and changed his major to pre-med.

Cly began performing the da Vinci surgeries around 15 years ago, making him one of the early pioneers in the field. Because of his experience, Cly said he naturally gets many of the harder surgeries.

He noted other doctors say, “Cly’s been doing this the longest. This is a tough case, let’s give it to him!”

“At first it was scary, but with time I just naturally became the guy for the hard cases,” Cly noted.

“It forced me to learn how to do the harder stuff. I’ve tried to teach several doctors over the years (how to do some of the procedures) but most Continued on page 2

Active volunteer makes a difference in community %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I retired from Standard Motors in 2011,” stated Brenda Harrell, Rochester. “I had so much leisure time I grew weary. I wanted something to do to make a difference in life. So, I went to the Fulton County Senior Center and asked if there was anything I could do to help anywhere.

That’s when I became part of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. I not only felt useful again but was making a difference in the lives of others.”

Harrell started by manning the phone at the FCSC. “I love

interacting and visiting with people. So that was a good place for me to start.”

She was then sent to the homes of elderly people to clean house, do laundry and run errands. “Many of those seniors were lonely. I was there not only to do their housework and laundry, but to show them somebody cares. I took some of them to their doctor’s appointments. I’d go with them to the beauty shop.

Sometimes we’d go shopping … anything to make them feel special.”

One of the seniors she was visiting fell. “I took her to the hospital and waited with her for

the doctors to say she was ok.

She began to cry and said, ‘I’m so glad you’re here.’ I, too, began to cry. God gave me my life to share with others and this was a time I could do just that.”

Manning the phone at the Fulton County Chamber was also one of her volunteer jobs. “I’d serve wherever needed.”

Volunteering at Woodlawn Hospital for four years was a highlight for Harrell. “I’d take magazines and newspapers to the patients. I’d also deliver flowers to their rooms. But more important than that, I’d talk to them to brighten their days. I can’t count how many times one of them told me it was so great to have someone to talk to.”

Shortly after coming to the Senior Center, Harrell got a great surprise. “On Valentine’s Day they always elected a king and queen. In 2012, Dennis Guyer and I were voted king and queen.

I’ve always wanted to be a queen.

I was fairly new to the program and felt affirmed by my peers at the FCSC.” Harrell invites others to come to the FCSC. “We have free lunches each day with a donation box for those who’d like to help with expenses. There are lots of games. We play cards. Now we’re into chair volleyball. It’s so much fun and good exercise, too.”

Making memories with her friends from the FCSC has made Harrell’s life richer. “We’ve even traveled together. I went with

%5(1'$ +$55(// the group on a chartered bus to visit the East Coast. I also took a trip to Washington, D.C., with the group.”

This has been a rough year for Harrell. “I lost my fiancé this past June, just two weeks before we were to be married. Even now I feel depressed and it’s hard to concentrate.”

Once again, her friends at the

FCSC have made the transition easier for her. “I keep busy at the senior center and am surrounded by caring friends. It helps me cope.”

Harrell has two grown daughters, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. “I love being with my family.” She is also active at her church Faith Outreach.

Of his partnership with Adebayo, Cly lauded him on his desire to learn.

“When I met Dr. Adebayo, he told me, ‘I want to learn that. I know how hard it is. I want to be better.

We both want to keep growing and learning.”

OBITUARIES Charles Leon Baird Charles Leon Baird, 94, Rochester, died at 11:40 a.m. Aug. 23, 2021.

He was born Oct. 14, 1926.

On June 28, 1947, he married Dorothy L. Newton, she &+$5/(6 /(21 survives. %$,5' Also surviving are daughters, Nancy Thompson, Twelve Mile, Stella Hoover, Grass Creek, Karen Mundy, Logansport; nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, seven great great-grandchildren; sister Sharon Baird, Fulton; brother in law, Gerald Newton, Fulton, sister in law, Bonnie Newton, Riverside, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Fulton Community Center. Burial was at the Fulton Cemetery, where military graveside services took place.

Martha Jeannette Vires Buckner Martha Jeanetter Vires Buckner, 71, Rochester, died at 11 a.m.

Aug. 25, 2021.

She was born Dec. 17, 1949.

She is survived by her husband, Ru0$57+$ fus Buckner -($11(77( III, Rochester; sons, James 9,5(6 %8&.1(5 Vires, Colorado, Michael Vires, Rochester, Rufus Buckner IV, Florida; daughters; Angela Fields, Akron, Crystal Hill, Rochester, eight grandchildren; brother, Rev. Richard Ritter, Rochester; sisters Ruth Bean, Argos, Carole Jones, Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Aug. 30 at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.

Fulton County REMC seeks student board members Fulton County REMC is seeking applications from high school juniors and seniors to select student board members for the 2021-22 school year.

Interested students must be a current junior or senior enrolled at Caston High School, Culver High School, Pioneer High School, North Miami High School, Rochester High School, Tippecanoe Valley High School, Winamac High School or an equivalent home school. Parents must have a membership in good standing with Fulton County REMC. Students must attend a minimum of seven events per year, including at least four board meetings, to qualify for the scholarships.

State notifying Hoosiers about improper access of contact tracing information The Indiana Department of Health is notifying nearly 750,000 Hoosiers that data from the state’s COVID-19 online contact tracing survey was improperly accessed. The data included name, address, email, gender, ethnicity and race and date of birth.

The state was notified of the unauthorized access on July 2.

Last week, the state and the company that accessed the data signed a “certificate of destruction” to confirm that the data was not released to any other entity and was destroyed by the company.

When the state was notified of the unauthorized access, the Indiana Office of Technology and IDOH immediately corrected a software configuration issue and requested the records that had been accessed. Those records were returned on Aug. 4.

“We believe the risk to Hoosiers whose information was accessed is low. We do not collect Social Security information as a part of our contact tracing program and no medical information was obtained,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG. “We will provide appropriate protections for anyone impacted.”

The state Department of Health will send letters to affected Hoosiers to notify them that

the state will provide one year of free credit monitoring and is partnering with Experian to open a call center to answer questions from those impacted. In addition, the Indiana Office of Technology will continue its regular scans to ensure information was not transferred to another party.

“We take the security and integrity of our data very seriously,” said Tracy Barnes, chief information officer for the state. “The company that accessed the data is one that intentionally looks for software vulnerabilities, then reaches out to seek business. We have corrected the software configuration and will aggressively follow up to ensure no records were transferred.”

Indiana public colleges and universities provide a variety of resources for students facing housing and food insecurity like food pantries, emergency funds and on-campus housing during breaks, according to results from the Housing Instability and Food Insecurity report released today by Foster Success.

Foster Success ensures that youth transitioning out of foster care are educated, housed, financially stable, employed and connected to a support system by age 26.

Earlier this year, Foster Success and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education surveyed all Indiana public colleges and universities to gather information on the ways campuses support students facing housing and food insecurity.

Representatives from 27 unique campuses responded, which is about 76% of Indiana public colleges and universities The report reveals that while most campuses who responded have resources in place to assist students experiencing food and or housing insecurity, there is a significant lack of high quality data capturing the prevalence of such barriers and challenges.

Only about half of the campuses report tracking food insecurity, and just 10 of theses track data on housing insecurity. However, data are almost entirely based on counts of use or number of referrals. These methods do not capture the prevalence, particularly the unmet needs, of students who are experiencing food or housing insecurity and are unaware of or unable to access on-campus support.

Over three quarters of responding campuses have an oncampus food pantry available to students. Of those campuses, less than half have restriction on student access to the pantries, with the most common restriction being the need to set appointments or request access. Five campuses provide emergency relief funds for food, specifically.

The report spotlights examples of resources offered

by Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University South Bend, Purdue University Northwest, Vincennes University, Ball State University, Ivy Tech Community College South Bend and Elkhart as well as Ivy Tech Community College Ko-

komo. For instance, along with having an on-campus food pantry, Indiana University Bloomington offers a variety of additional resources for students experiencing food insecurity.

Campus Kitchens in Bloomington provide weekly boxes of fresh produce with recipes and $10 dining cards are available for students “on the spot.” Additionally, during winter and summer breaks, Indiana University dining and catering staff provide one free cooked meal to students in need. This can expand to include a snack or two meals.

Based on the findings from the Housing Instability and Food Insecurity survey, recommendations are focused on improving data collection, proactive outreach and more collaboration among institutions. Recommendations also call for collaboration centered around sharing best practices for developing active networks and referral relationships with community organizations, disseminating information and resources to students, and tracking and measuring the impact of programs designed to address food and housing insecurity.

READI grant: Survey from North Central Indiana READI Plan North Central Indiana has kicked off a six-county regional collaboration to pursue the Indiana Economic Development Corporation’s Regional Economic Acceleration & Development Initiative. The North Central Indiana Regional Planning Council has applied on the behalf of Cass, Clinton, Fulton, Howard, Miami, and Tipton counties to seek up to $50 million of state funding to complete transformational community development projects across the region.

Building on its past success, the North Central region has started work on a comprehensive READI

strategy to create a regional vision and identify common goals and objectives. The strategy will ultimately lead to innovative, regional solutions to address talent attraction and development, enhance the quality of place and life, and lead economic growth.

NCIRPC. Gov. Eric Holcomb announced the $500 million READI program in early May. Self-designated regions will submit regional strategies by Aug. 31 for IEDC’s review.

IEDC expects to fund a minimum of 10 Indiana regions to support investments that strengthen population and economic growth opportunities. READI awards are expected by the end of the year.

“There is a very quick timeline for this opportunity, but I’m excited and encouraged by the level of collaboration of the regional partners. We are seeing common issues across each of our counties, and we are building regional strategies to address those issues,” stated Paul Wyman, Howard County Commissioner. “Our region has a history of success in working together and this READI initiative gives us the opportunity to achieve truly transformational

NCIPRC serves the region by building stronger local communities and regional economies by enhancing the quality of life throughout the region. To this end, NCIPRC is applying for state funding from the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative; an initiative focused on attracting, developing, and retaining talent in Indiana through improving quality of place, promoting innovation, and encouraging entrepreneurship. Event to support memorial The American Legion Department of Indiana is hosting a 9/11 Remembrance event that will honor the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and help raise funds for the Indiana 9/11 Memorial expansion to include the lives lost at the Pentagon.

Open to all, the event will consist of a vehicle motorcade welcoming motorcycles, jeeps, trucks, cars, vans and buses that will ride as a group to honor all lives lost on 9/11.

The event will occur rain or shine and start from all four corners of the state, with start times that vary based on location. The four motorcades will convene at the Indiana Legion Headquarters located on the ground of the former Fort Benjamin Harrison located in Lawrence, before departing at 12:30 p.m. as a group, and travel together to the Indiana 9/11 Memorial site.

A remembrance ceremony featuring dignitaries, first responders, and military veterans will start at 2 p.m. and honor all lives lost on 9/11 and in the ensuing wars.

Most Hoosiers can resume feeding birds The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has announced that Hoosiers in 76 counties, including Fulton County, across the state can resume feeding birds.

To help birds in affected areas, DNR recommends that residents of the following counties continue to refrain from feeding: Allen, Carroll, Clark, Floyd, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Lake, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Porter, St. Joseph, Tippecanoe and Whitley.

Residents of other counties may again put out their bird feeders if they are comfortable doing so and are not observing sick or dead birds in their yard. Seed and suet feeders should be cleaned at least once every two weeks by scrubbing feeders with soap and water, followed by a short soak in a 10% bleach solution to keep birds healthy and limit the spread of disease. Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned at least once a week with a 10% bleach solution and rinsed thoroughly.

In late May, DNR started receiving reports of sick and dying birds from Monroe County with neurological signs, eye swelling and crusty discharge around the eyes.

Earlier this summer, DNR recommended a statewide moratorium on bird feeding to slow the spread of the still undetermined illness that is killing birds across our state. Hoosiers answered the call — removing feeders, cleaning birdbaths and submitting more than 3,400 reports of sick or dead birds. Of these reports, DNR biologists confirmed more than 500 possible cases in 72 counties that involved a very specific set of clinical signs (crusty eyes, eye discharge, and/or neurological issues).

Multiple bird species have been reported as affected, including American robin, blue jay, brownheaded cowbird, common grackle, European starling, various species of sparrows and finches, and northern cardinal.

DNR staff collected samples and submitted them to the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory earlier this summer. DNR received final laboratory diagnostic results, which ruled out common bird diseases like avian influenza and West Nile virus, but the cause or transmission of the disease outbreak is currently unknown.

The USGS National Wildlife Health Center’s avian disease experts are continuing testing to try and determine the cause of this disease outbreak. Indiana will continue to support the effort by providing samples to this laboratory.

All birds have tested negative for avian influenza, West Nile virus, and other flaviviruses, Salmonella and Chlamydia (bacterial pathogens), Newcastle disease virus and other paramyxoviruses, herpesviruses and poxviruses, and Trichomonas parasites. Other diagnostic tests are ongoing.

Based on the data, it appears that the bird illness is consistently affecting specific areas. There is no imminent threat to people, the population of specific bird species or to the overall population of birds in Indiana.

I cannot begin to thank ALL the people that came to our place between June 26th, the day Darrell was transported to the house by St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, and on July 20th, the day Darrell passed away. Darrell was overwhelmed with the company we had every day. We had food daily for a month from all of our friends. We had company EVERY DAY and Darrell was so delighted.

I could never thank enough the following people from UPS: Derrell Young, Brandon Hoffer and Albert Salazar who was Darrell’s favorite supervisor, for coming down just a few days after we returned to the house. Darrell had no idea they were coming. Also Lane Miner from UPS who also showed up and shocked him! Lane parked six inches from Darrell’s truck every day and made sure his windshield was cleaned, oil checked and rear view mirrors were tilted out before they left the building. These four helped to get Darrell to retirement as he was determined to make it regardless of needing two knee replacements. All the drivers showed Darrell such respect and support over the years.

Also thanks to his center managers Keith and Jamie for letting him work just four days a week in order to be off his knees those last two years and to all those drivers that pushed him out of the truck every week and said “You don’t want to work today, it’s going to rain, etc.”

To all those family members, especially John, Debbie and Jeff for being by my side throughout the most difficult times of our lives. Thanks also to our neighbors Doug, Kay and Kaleb Parsons and Gunner who were there every night to help get him ready for bed and Darrell’s dear Art Shidler whom he loved so much, along with that dog Bella that Darrell loved, who came every day no matter what to help. Art and Darrell were very best of friends.

Thank you to our friends Pat and Robin Burkett, Pat’s visits and that dear little Toby, and Richard and Tammy Powell for all their help. So many thanks to all of our church family at The Cross as well as our church family at McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Darrell loved them both. I still have not gotten through all the cards and notes we received. I so appreciate everyone that came to his memorial service, Darrell would have been so surprised.

Much gratitude to his piano teacher, Jana Uhrich, and her beautiful tribute to Darrell.

Thank you to Doug Brovont for hiring Darrell to take care of the properties where we lived, he loved it so much and took pride in it. And finally to Darrell’s local doctor, Dr. Julius Sitjar and his surprise visit, it made Darrell’s day.

Our highest respect for Kindred Hospice who St. Vincent’s set us up with by giving us raving reviews about them. And our utmost respect and appreciation too along with St. Vincent’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s Heart Hospital on our late night trips. They were always ready when we pulled in along with Darrell’s 7 specialists that took care of him for 28 years in Indianapolis. His very favorite cardiologist, Dr. Doug Pitts, his knee surgeon Dr. Tom Klootwyck and endocrinologist, Dr. Moazzam Habib, all of whom we could call any time, day or night. To Webb’s Pharmacy and Harry’s staff who made several runs here with needed medicines and the employee who came and delivered the wheelchair on short notice, I appreciated it.

So many thanks to the Good Family Funeral Home for all their help and support. And last, the Chamber of Commerce who along with Dawn Peterson at Jarretty’s, Scott Sayger and Phil McCarter who encouraged Darrell to be a big part of Christmas in Rochester. Never would we have dreamed it would be a nine year event and just keep growing!!

Golf outing to support Galen Smith Memorial Scholarship Past players, coaches, students and family are proud and excited to tell you about a scholarship fund that has been created in memory of Coach Galen Smith. This scholarship honors a man dedicated to his students, his players, family and friends.

Smith came to Rochester High School in 1972 as a health and physical education teacher and as the head coach of the boys basketball team. He was a 32-year educator for Rochester Community Schools, retiring in 2004. Before coming to the school and community, he enjoyed great success teaching and coaching at Clayton, his alma mater Chili, North Miami, Darlington and Oak Hill high schools. Overall, he dedicated 46 years of service to his students, parents and colleagues.

During his years of service, Smith coached cross-country and track and field, but was more wellknown around the state for the basketball teams he led. His 197374 Zebra squad still has the best single-season winning percentage in school history. They posted a 21-1 record and a final Associated Press state ranking of No. 9 at the

end of the season, many years before class basketball started in 1997. He led RHS on the hardwood to sectional championships in 1975 and 1978, and his teams won the Northern Lakes Conference in the 1973-74, 1974-75, and 1978-79 seasons. Smith was an esteemed role model, admired by his students and respected by his peers. More importantly, he was a life coach, providing the foundation and skill sets necessary to empower the success of his students, allowing them to embark on post high school life journeys with confidence. He took great satisfaction in watching the development of young men and women as they evolved into productive and contributing citizens to society.

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is forecasting Hoosier farmers will harvest on average 194 bushels of corn per acre, an increase of 3.7 bushels over last year. If realized, Indiana will produce just over 1 billion bushels of corn, the fifth highest of any state.

For comparison, USDA is expecting Illinois farmers to see an average corn yield of 214 bushels per acre, producing 2.3 billion bushels of corn.

Nationally, USDA is projecting 174.6 bushels per acre, resulting in 14.8 billion bushels of corn.

In terms of soybeans, Indiana could be the third highest soybean growing state this year.

USDA is projecting a statewide record yield of 60 bushels an acre with production of 341 million bushels statewide. Illinois is expected to top the list with 681 million bushels based on a statewide average yield of 64 bushels per acre. But Indiana farmers are still a long way off from harvest.

“In terms of the soybeans,

this season has been anything but normal. We’ve had wet and drought conditions, affecting the root systems and causing disease.

The next 35 days are critical for yield development,” said Purdue Associate Professor of Agronomy Shaun Casteel in a news release.

Nationally, the ag department is forecasting 4.3 billion bushels of soybeans, up 5% from 2020.

The crop production estimates are based on crop conditions as of Aug. 1. According to USDA’s weekly crop progress report, 74% of corn and 70% of soybeans in Indiana are considered good to excellent.

USDA is also forecasting a record yield for Indiana’s winter wheat crop, which measures about 300,000 acres. The agency puts the statewide average yield at 82 bushels an acre, generating 24.6 million bushels of wheat.

Indiana is one of five states expecting record crops in both corn and soybeans. The other states are Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Rotors Over Mentone returns The 12th annual Rotors Over Mentone fly-in event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Lawrence D. Bell Museum in Mentone.

It’s played indoors or outdoors on a court that is similar to a tennis court. Players use paddles that resemble pingpong paddles along with a wiffleball. The game can be played with two or four people. Pickleball can be as leisurely or as competitive as you desire.

Scott Kistler, Rochester, and his wife Susie claim to be addicted to pickleball and thought it would be a good idea to have courts in Rochester. In April this year, Kistler presented the Rochester City Parks board a plan of action and suitable locations for the courts.

Pickleball attracts people of all ages; so not only is it fun, there is a chance to meet a lot of new people within the community.

Tractor drive in memory of Kurt Miller Sept. 11 Echoes of the Past will host a memorial tractor drive on Saturday, Sept. 11, in memory of Kurt Miller, a student who loved farming.

Miller died April 17, 2015, in an accident at the age of 17.

He was a student at Tippecanoe Valley High School and a member of the FFA and the Beaver Dam 4-H Club. His love of John Deere tractors was only surpassed by his love for Ford trucks. He had a smile and demeanor that changed the world of anyone who knew him, according to a news release from Echoes of the Past.

A memorial fund in his name has been set up in his honor that benefits youth involved in agricultural activities, such as FFA or 4-H. The tractor drive will begin at Kurt’s childhood home at 8298 W. 600S, Claypool. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the drive will begin at 9 a.m.

You do not have to be a member of the club to participate in the drive.

There are many people who are so afraid, they will not even talk about Jesus. They will not even consider his claims and statements.

Should we be afraid of Jesus? The answer is “yes” and “no” depending upon where we are in relationship to him. Let’s look at what the Bible has to say on this matter.

Romans 10:13 gives us a statement that is important. Everyone who sincerely calls on the name of the Lord will be saved from God’s

wrath. That’s good news; that’s the gospel. This verse gives us a remarkable statement, which Paul draws from the Old Testament, to enforce his argument salvation is by faith (see Joel 2:32). “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things” (see Romans 10:14-15).

The Apostle Paul shows there must be messengers of the gospel who have credentials from God. Paul began this epistle with the claim he was a called apostle of Jesus Christ (see Romans 1:1). There follows a logical sequence. “Preachers” must be sent in order for people to hear that they might believe, for they would not know how to call upon God. Paul pinpoints everything on believing. This, therefore, necessitated his (and our) ministry.

The result of this belief, for both Jews and Gentiles (see Romans 10:12), is they will not be put to shame (see Romans 10:11). We often think of coming to Jesus as a chance for our sins to be wiped away. And Jesus certainly does that.

But he also removes our shame, delivering us in our everyday circumstances. If we call on Jesus, though the consequences may be difficult, we will never regret it.

The missionary heart of Paul comes out in Romans 10:14–17. Salvation is by faith, and faith comes “by hearing …. the word of God” (see Romans 10:17). But unbelieving sinners cannot hear unless we tell them. God needs people with beautiful feet (see Isaiah 52:7) to carry the gospel to the lost. Remember, Paul continued caring, praying, and sharing the good news even when things were difficult.

If you are a Christian, someone told you the good news of the gospel of Christ, you believed it, and you acted on it. Now it’s your turn to tell someone else. Stay clean and serve the Lord.

He will bless you for your faithfulness.

New state record set for cover crops

According to a recent conservation survey, Indiana farmers have set a conservation record this year by planting an estimated 1.5 million acres of overwinter living covers, the largest amount ever recorded by an Indiana Conservation Partnership survey.

Overwintering living covers, cover crops and small grains, like wheat, are known for their environmental benefits. Cover crops and small grains help increase organic matter in the soil and improve overall soil health by adding living roots to the soil more months of the year. Cover crops also improve water infiltration into the soil while other covers like legumes serve as natural fertilizers.

Although the conservation transect doesn’t differentiate between cover crops and small grains, Indiana farmers typically plant fewer than 200,000 acres of small grains annually, so cover crops vastly dominate the 1.5 million estimated acres. With the exception of corn and soybeans, cover crops are planted on more acres than any other commodity

crop in Indiana. Cover crops are typically planted in the fall after harvest, and designed to protect the soil and keep roots in the ground throughout the winter, which improves soil health and helps filter water runoff.

“I want to congratulate Hoosier farmers for continuing to be leaders in conservation,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, who also serves as Indiana Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development.

“By increasing our cover crop practices, we are keeping Indiana waterways and soil healthier for future planting seasons and the next generation of farmers.”

As a result of the cover crops planted last year, it is estimated that 1.6 million tons of sediment was prevented from entering Indiana’s waterways, which is enough sediment to fill more than 453 Olympic size swimming pools. Overwintering covers also prevented 4.1 million pounds of nitrogen and over 2 million pounds of phosphorus from entering Indiana’s waterways.

Holcomb creates public health commission Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb recently announced he is establishing a 15-member commission to examine Indiana’s public health system and make recommendations to improve its structure, funding and operations.

“Our public health system has been around for almost 140 years, and it’s overdue for a thorough look so that we can best position it to provide excellence to Hoosiers for the next 100 years,” Holcomb said. “This review, coupled with our ongoing commitment to improve key health indicators, will best position Indiana to be a great state to live, work, play and invest in and grow a healthy workforce.”

The commission will be co-chaired by former state Sen. Luke Kenley, who has spent decades managing complex issues and budgets for the state, and Dr. Judy Monroe, who

served as Indiana’s state health commissioner from 2005 to 2010 and now serves as president and chief executive officer of the CDC Foundation.

State Health Commissioner Kris Box will serve as the commission’s secretary.

The commission will include subgroups that will examine topics ranging from funding and resources to delivery of services and collection and use of data. Its goal is to make recommendations for improvements and standardization that can be shared with the Indiana General Assembly. Such a review was planned before the pandemic, which has only exacerbated the need the modernize Indiana’s public health system.

Appointments to the commission are forthcoming. The commission is expected to begin its work in September and provide recommendations within a year.

“This year’s data may be surprising to some considering the tough farm economy this past year. But over time, our farmers have learned that incorporating a comprehensive management system into their operation that includes cover crops and no-till/ strip-till have helped improve the sustainability and productivity of their soils,” said Indiana State Conservationist, Jerry Raynor.

“As a result, farmers are sequestering more carbon, increasing water infiltration, improving wildlife and pollinator habitat — all while harvesting better profits and often better yields.”

Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler is excited to see what the future holds for soil conservation in Indiana. “Soil conservation remains strong in Indiana and this recent survey proves that Hoosier farms go above and beyond in their best management practices to increase soil health,” said Kettler. “I am optimistic that this trend of increasing cover crop acres will continue for years to come.”
