Northwest Edition R Reaching Seniors In Illiana: Cook, Lake & Porter Counties
Bonner Center keeps bodies, minds active
7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU You can’t keep a good facility down, not even during a pandemic. The Bonner Senior Center in Portage reopened in July, and since then attendance is approaching pre-COVID-19 numbers, said Robin Wilkening, the center’s director. “We’re in a different world,” said Wilkening, after her first year in charge. “It’s been challenging but rewarding.” Completed in 1980, Bonner is open to all seniors aged 55 and older. A nutrition site, the facility offers lunches five days a week to those 60-plus. It is named for Eunice Bonner, president of the Senior Citizens Club of Portage in the 1970s. The center also offers socialization, fitness and transportation. Bus rides are available to the center, medical or pharmaceutical appoint-
ments and grocery shopping. Besides medical screenings and vaccinations, Bonner offers tax and legal assistance, along with computer and Smartphone classes. Recently completed is a quarter-mile fitness trail west of the center. The trail will officially open in the spring, Wilkening said, although patrons had already been using the trail, which is designed for two or four users at a time. The trail also has stations for strength training, with two of the stations handicap accessible. Inside the center, Sandra Roedel and Susan Regnier lead an arts and crafts session, using leftover materials from paper ornaments. ‘We’re getting rid of our stash,” said Regnier, a retired art teacher. “These are nice people who might just be at home, sitting around.” “I love working and sharing with people,” Roedel added. “This place keeps you young and busy.” Regnier plans to introduce Valentines for Veterans, a program she did successfully in schools. Seniors will be able to make a craft item for a veteran. Regnier added that knitting and crocheting are also in the works. Continued on page 2
