getting seniors focused on 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 67(9( (89,12 It’s about time for another SilverSneakers session at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. Some participants are warming up and stretching, while others are chatting, catching up with things since the pandemic. SilverSneakers is a nationwide exercise program specifically designed for older adults, for keeping participants engaged and interested through fun and social activities. The hope is that enjoyable fitness activities may encourage seniors to stay healthier. “I love everything about it,” said Wilma Ault. “I love the people I meet and the exercise. The instructors are wonderful.” The Valparaiso woman added, “We keep moving in what we do,

FITNESS and it helps.” “I needed the exercise,” Noreen Korgel of Valparaiso confessed. “It helps mentally, socially and physically.” The Valparaiso Family YMCA offers several SilverSneakers programs, including classic, stability, yoga, Splash and Enerchi, which combines tai chi and qigong exercises. Classic offers a variety of exercises and movements taught from seated and standing positions, set to music to increase muscular strength. Alyse Kominakis, the Valpo Y’s wellness programs coordinator, said SilverSneakers classes are open to any member age 14 and older, regardless of background or ability. The program’s

focus, she said, is on developing balance, strength, cardio and endurance. Classic classes run 45 minutes three days a week. Working with seniors, Kominakis continued, means focusing on quality of life issues with plenty of functional exercises. These include daily living activities such as pushing, pulling and squatting. “Balance is also a very important factor,” added Tonia Frederick, a group exercise instructor for SilverSneakers. A typical class, Frederick explained, consists of warm-ups, cardio, strength building, balance, cool-down and stretching. Exercise “tools” include hand-held balls, hand weights, resis-

tance bands and chairs. At least one participant worked out while stationary in a walker. Routines are done to upbeat music, including the Beach Boys, Chubby Checker, Diana Ross, Jay and the Americans and tunes from the musical “Grease,” with some class members adding to the music. That lightheartedness is also part of SilverSneakers, Kominakis said, citing the program’s social aspect. “People get to know one another and go to lunch together,” she said. Marilyn Ahner of Valparaiso, a participant and YMCA instructor, cites the fellowship factor. “People really like coming. They visit with people,” she said, “and the instructors are awesome.” Kominakis and Frederick added that SilverSneakers numbers are Continued on page 2
