celebrates completing major projects 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Leo-Cedarville early last month celebrated the completion of three major downtown revitalization projects with a ribbon cutting ceremony. That was followed by the arrival of Santa on a fire truck that kicked off the community’s annual Coming Home for Christmas event.

Total cost of the three projects, $1,775,591, was primarily borne by three governmental agencies. The two-block Center

Street (S.R. 1) streetscape project in old downtown Leo received $750,000 from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs through the Indiana Regional Stellar Communities Program. The town of Leo-Cedarville contributed the remainder which totaled $497,000.

Project number two was the improvement of Wayne and Main Streets intersecting the streetscape improvement area at a cost of $518,591 of which the Indiana Department of Transportation Community Continued on page 3

A freedom that helps drive his passion %\ 0$5< -$1( %2*/( )HDWXUH :ULWHU Doug Blackwell is a man of many interests. An avid blues fan, he’s also an acclaimed sports photographer and is currently pursuing certification through the FAA to become an approved drone pilot. This certification which will fuel yet another hobby and support his freelance photography business at the same time.

So when Blackwell was looking for regular employment last year, he wanted to be sure the new gig would allow him to pursue his many passions.

A friend told him about a medical courier position with Spoke Logistics, and he knew he had found his answer. As a medical courier, Blackwell spends his days delivering life-saving medications directly to patients in the Northeast

Indiana region.

“We’re delivering medications to patients who have severe ailments,” said Blackwell. These include treatments for specific diseases, such as cancer, and antibiotics for very severe infections. “These aren’t prescriptions you can pick up at your local pharmacy,” he said. “This is life-saving medicine, delivered directly to the patient’s door.”

Each day, Blackwell and other drivers receive the day’s route, which can include 18-30 deliveries for the day and take them as far west as Peru, south to Marion and north to Fremont. “I drive anywhere from 250-400 miles each day,” he said. He drives his own car, a Prius Prime, with gas mileage upwards of 75 miles per gallon.

After sorting and loading packages, Blackwell manually plans his route, accommodating

packages that need to be delivered at specific times during the day. “Some patients need medicine delivered between 3:30-4:30 p.m.,” he said, “while another might need a delivery any time after 2 p.m. They don’t want this medicine sitting out all day.”

The job offers many benefits to Blackwell, not the least of which is time building relationships with the patients themselves. “When we come to the door,” he said, “we meet the patients and start with small talk that later builds into friendships.”

Another advantage of his medical courier job is time spent in silence.

“Many people are trying to activate their minds and stay entertained all the time,” he said. “A lot can be said about spending an hour in silence.”

sues his passion for harmonica-based blues. Driving gives him time to discover new artists, such as Chicago-based Charlie Musselwhite.

And don’t forget the view.

“When I’m out in the country on a gorgeous, sunny day,” he said, “the view from my office is spectacular. Sure, rainy and snowy days will happen, but when those sunny days come along, you forget about everything else.”

Perhaps the biggest benefit of Blackwell’s medical courier job is the time he can spend pursuing his side gig as a sports photographer. “I do a lot of photography for area high schools and some Big 10 football,” he said. He’s even covered some Notre Dame games, and last Thanksgiving he shot all six high school state football games. “This job gives me plenty of freedom,” he said. “For the first time in years, I actually have weekends free.”

It’s a freedom he treasures, one that helps drive his passions.

‘American Pie’ was an epic poem in musical form Don McLean In the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 1959, a small private plane slammed into a cornfield in north cen$ %RRPHU %ODVW tral Iowa.

7R 7KH 3DVW The accident %\ 5$1'$/ took the life & +,// of pop music superstar Charles Hardin “Buddy” Holly, age 22. Fellow touring stars Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper and the pilot, Roger Peterson, also died in the still unexplained catastrophe.

While millions of teenage

rock fans were undoubtedly devastated by the news, few probably felt more pain than 13-year-old Don McLean, who learned of Holly’s demise from headlines in the newspapers he delivered. “Buddy Holly was the first and last person I ever really idolized as a kid,” McLean has said. The loss he felt would inspire his multimillion-selling touchstone that, to him, lamented “the day the music died.” (Of course, it didn’t really die. What died was the innocence of the times; the music, as always, continued to evolve).

McLean, born in New York in 1945, dropped out of Villanova University to follow his muse as a folk singer/songwriter. Mentored by pal Pete

Seeger, McLean drifted around the East Coast club circuit for years, but never became a headliner.

He spent two years creating “Tapestry,” a 1969 album of original tunes. A small label — Mediarts — released it to good reviews but few sales. Mediarts was eventually absorbed by United Artists Records, a major company that had the clout to aggressively promote McLean’s second LP, the 1971 multi-platinum-selling “American Pie.” “American Pie” wasn’t just another nostalgia-fueled 45; in reality, it was an 800-word epic poem in musical form. McLean would later explain, “I wanted to write a song that summed up everything I felt about America and music.”

As with many complex

poems, deeper meanings lay beneath the surface of “American Pie.” Its dense, often confusing lyrics grow increasingly more somber as McLean’s tune unfolds amid religious references and enigmatic characters that begged several questions: Was Bob Dylan the jester? Did the crown once belong to Elvis Presley? Was the marching band the Beatles? Was Mick Jagger the Devil incarnate?

McLean has always divulged little about “American Pie,” but it’s easy to see he bemoans the loss of the carefree times of his, the first rock ‘n’ roll generation.

While his sing-along single may appear to be rollicking, even carefree, there’s actually little to cheer about here. To McLean, America was moving inexorably toward adverse

times, due in part to inner-city riots, Vietnam war protests and political assassinations.

“In ‘American Pie,’ things are headed in the wrong direction … becoming less idyllic …,” he once confessed. “It is a morality song, in a sense.”

On April 7, 2015, in Christie’s auction room in New York, McLean’s 16-page working manuscript for “American Pie” sold for an astounding $1.2 million. It became the thirdhighest price ever paid for an American literary item.

The normally closedmouthed McLean has often used a wry retort when people press him too hard about his song’s meaning: “It means,” he would answer, “I don’t ever have to work again if I don’t want to.”

“With all three projects going

on at the same time,” said Hale, “some issues became apparent with the sidewalk along the building with the Pride of Leo mural. It had to be redone causing the artist and local officials concerns about getting the work finished on schedule. He was unable to use his hydraulic lift to complete work on the second story level for about a week while the sidewalk was torn out, new concrete poured and then waiting for it to dry.”

Because the artist was unable to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony, Michele Hadley, Leo-Cedarville Foundation copresident, read a note from him.

“My hope in creating this mural is that it will stand as an iconic reminder of the strength, beauty and resolve of the Leo-Cedarville community. It’s more than just a school mascot or even a town namesake. The powerful presence of the Pride of Leo is unmistakable.”

Last but not least was the giant Pride of Leo mural on the side of the building at the northwest corner of Center and Main Streets painted by artist Tim Parsley, assistant professor of studio art, painting and drawing at the University of St. Francis.

Cost to create the huge lion that covers the entire side of the two-story building was $10,000.

Funding assistance was received from the Indiana Arts Commission and OCRA. The town kicked in approximately a third.

According to Rodd Hale, town

manager, “It has been a long road and was achieved only by the efforts of a lot of people. The new streets and sidewalks look great, the local residents are pleased and we’re back to business as usual. If it weren’t for the NewAllen Alliance arranging the funding, we wouldn’t have been cutting a ribbon or celebrating anything. All of which made this year’s Coming Home for Christmas really special.

“It all started in 2018 when the streetscape project became possible because of East Allen’s Indiana Regional Stellar Communities Designation. Then in January of 2020, due to the

According to Feeding America, approximately 17,000 northeast Indiana residents — 8,000 of which are children — regularly struggle with food insecurity. Deb Treesh, executive director of Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry, said that the funds received will be used to pay processing fees on donated livestock and deer, with the meat being given to agencies serving food-insecure residents within DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble and Steuben counties.

“More than ever, families are struggling to buy groceries. Food banks, pantries and soup kitchens work to protect the most vulnerable and underserved in our communities and these agencies continue to face increased demand,” said Amber Zecca, fund development director of Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry. “To donate, farmers and hunters just need to take their livestock or deer to a local participating meat processor (call ahead to schedule livestock).

After processing, local food banks and pantries are called to pick up the donation. There is absolutely no charge to the

livestock and deer donors.”

“The Olive B. Cole Foundation’s contribution will allow us to continue and expand on our mission of hunger relief by providing over 32,000 more meals through local hunger relief agencies. We are so grateful for the continued support of our efforts in responding to the needs of those in the community facing hunger,” said Treesh.

Boesch normally practices an hour a day. “My sticks are always handy,” he says, “so while watching television or just sitting around I throw a towel over a foot stool or chair for some silent drumming.

The towel inhibits the bounce you get from playing on actual drums, makes you work harder, is a good way to get the control I want and keeps me sharp.”

Unlike conventional drums, the Rolland Supersize Electric Drums used by Boesch are actually pads shaped like drums that are hooked into a drum module (brain) he has programmed into his iPad. He can make his snare drum, two tom-toms and a kettle drum make sounds normally not heard on drums. By simply changing a setting he can make the pitch either high or low or start low and swoop up. His three symbols and a high-hat are also hooked into the system to produce a variety of sounds to complement the music.

“They’re a lot of fun to play,” he added.

Setting up his drum set for practices or gigs is simple compared to a conventional drum set. “My set is hooked to a frame that I just slide into the back of my truck. When I get to Daniel’s for practice I just haul it out, attach the peddles, plug into the power and I’m ready to rock and roll.

In addition to being the band’s drummer, Boesch is its light technician. He’s also programmed the lighting into his iPad so he can change the movement and color of some 200 background scenes to give their music drama and excitement.

He and three guitar playing buddies formed a garage band. In the summer they pulled up the garage door and entertained neighborhood kids and any adults who might stop to see what was causing the racket.

To find out what it really took to form a band and learn how to write and make music, he enrolled in the Boyd Hunt Enterprise Music School in Minneapolis.

Unfortunately the bass player proposed to his girlfriend and dropped out. We never played a gig. I returned to Fort Wayne, played in a number of bands, formed a couple myself and have been with the Daniel Tucker Band for the past seven years.”

Is there a secret to what helps with acid reflux?

Occasional acid reflux (heartburn) isn’t unusual, but according to John Hopkin’s, 20% of the population suffers from

chronic heartburn, discomfort and belching after every meal.

The diagnosis by a doctor may be gastroesophageal reflux disease. You may not feel a reflux of acid, but may have a chronic inflammation of the esophagus, called esophagitis, which is irritated with food and causes pain.

Turnstone: A place to turn for those with Parkinson’s Disease

Since 1943, Turnstone Center’s services are unmatched in the Fort Wayne area, and meet a vital community need for children and adults with disabilities. Programs include therapeutic intervention, early education, case management, adult day services, health and wellness programming, sports and recreation opportunities and more.

Since Nov. 1, Turnstone has added the Rock Steady Boxing program thanks to funding from Jeff Hoffman and the Chick-fil-A on Coliseum Boulevard. This unique program combines non-contact boxing with group fitness and focuses on building strength, power, flexibility and confidence. This class is specifically for those diagnosed with all stages of Parkinson’s Disease. There is no cure for the progressive, degenerative neurological disease that effects 1.5 million people in the United States. It can result in the loss of motor and non-motor function and lead to amnesia, difficulty walking, sleep disturbances, coordination problems, dizziness and dementia. For some unknown reason, the brain begins a decline in production of a neurotransmitter called “dopamine” which is responsible

for brain-to-muscle communication.

Several medical studies on exercise and Parkinson’s have concluded that forced intense exercise can slow progression of the disease. The mission of the Rock Steady Boxing program is to empower people with Parkinson’s to fight back. The program is designed to delay the symptoms that come with Parkinson’s. It relieves stress, develops a new skill and allows participants to have fun while doing it. Telling grandchildren you’re going to boxing class sounds much better than physical thereby.

Rock Steady Boxing gives people with Parkinson’s hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum.

The program is located in the new Rock Steady Boxing group exercise room in Turnstone’s Plossman Athletic Center at 3320 S. Clinton St. This unique training experience is one of two noncompetitive programs in the Fort Wayne area. “The other location is at Lutheran Life Villages,” said Zach Lothamer, a certified Rock Steady Boxing coach at Turnstone.

The Rock Steady Boxing Method was developed in Indianapolis over the course of seven years. In 2012, the training was launched to share the Method with other people

The adaptive exercise method for people with Parkinson’s welcomes men and women of all ages and levels of ability.

It involves regular exercises, such as stretching, bicycling, running/walking, jump roping, push-ups, balancing and lots

of non-contact boxing, led by experienced trainers/coaches.

“We are fortunate to be able to bring this program to our Fort Wayne community,” said Lothamer, who studied kinesiology at IPFW and has been with Turnstone six years.

“Non-contact boxing is a great form of exercise for anyone but has been proven to help slow the progression for Parkinson’s Disease-related symptoms.”

Rock Steady Boxing is a uniquely effective form of physical exercise for people who are living with Par-

kinson’s. This non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness routine is proving to dramatically improve the ability of people with Parkinson’s to live independent lives, Lothamer explained.

‘Fear not’ is a message shared by Schlatter %\ 0$5< -$1( %2*/( )HDWXUH :ULWHU In a world full of worry about the economy, politics and the pandemic, Donald Schlatter has an important message to share: fear not. It’s a motto that has guided him throughout his adult life, a life that has taken him across the globe as a missionary to Thailand.

In Thailand, he ministered to people with leprosy, developed a writing system for an entirely different culture and delivered a complete copy of the Bible to tribal villagers.

If anyone had reason to fear, it was Schlatter. And yet, he did not. He believed in a God who called him to reach people who had never heard the Gospel message. That belief was so strong that he was able to take his wife and then two-yearold daughter halfway around the globe, where untold and

unexpected adventures awaited him – including the birth of four more children. And he did so without fear.

“I began to read about people who had never heard the Gospel,” Schlatter said. “It was a tremendous need. In Thailand, for example, there were very few missionaries and very few Christians.” After volunteering to go to Thailand, Schlatter and his wife, Janet, tackled the challenge of learning not just a new language but a new alphabet as well.

“At first,” he said, “we worked with the Thai people and were able to help those who had leprosy. Some of them responded and a little church started that way.”

After three years, Schlatter and his family moved up to a tribal area where people spoke yet another language. “There were people in this hillside village who were interested

in Jesus because of what they observed in a neighboring hillside tribe,” he said. “They saw people who didn’t do the spirit worship and sacrifices and who were able to prosper. They saw Jesus deliver these people from fear, and they wanted to know more.”

And so began a ministry that would last over 50 years of Schlatter’s life. The church he started grew from no members to believers in 20 different villages, with churches that are completely independent and indigenous, fully self-supporting.

These days, Schlatter attends Grabill Missionary Church, a church he called home when he was on furlough from the mission field and where he hosts a small group Bible study at his home. As part of the small group, Schlatter helps lead the group in prayer and encourages members of the congregation as they think about God’s word more carefully.

-$1(7 $1' '21$/' 6&+/$77(5 “It gives us an opportunity to look at the Bible and discuss the meaning of the verses,” he said. And while he can no longer see to drive, Schlatter has also served as a volunteer at Dupont Hospital and at the Dove’s Nest Thrift Shop.

Through all his travels and years of ministry, Schlatter learned an important lesson.

“You don’t need to be afraid if you have faith,” he said. “God can do seemingly impossible things, and I praise God for all he has done through my life.”

“Are you going to stand all evening?” Mary Ellen asked me.

“I don’t want you to think I look elderly if I sit down too soon.”

“Dick, no one will recognize you. It’s dark in this theater.”

To make me even more paranoid, I was constantly reminded that my Apple Watch tracks my movements. And I was not doing very well. Every once in a while, the dial lights up to report how much time I’ve spent standing versus sitting. Apparently, to pass Apple standards, you need to “stand and move at least one minute 12 different hours in the day for a week.” I had to read that

directive several times to understand it. Like when my pill jar says: Take two tablets three times a day with or without food. Huh? What?

By the way, you can find all kinds of advice online about how to cheat the watch. Yes, people actually do this. One guy admitted flapping his arms like a bird before he went to bed because he discovered it fools the watch when it registers your standing time. I tried that one night so I could show Mary Ellen on my watch that I had made some improvement.

She caught me flapping.

Now she no longer tells me not to sit: she tells me not to roost.

Sitting room only Mary Ellen and I have a standing argument — literally, a standing argument. She claims the first thing ,1 $ I do when 1876+(// I enter a %\ ',&. room is sit :2/)6,( down. “That makes you seem old,” she said, “and I know you are concerned about not portraying that image.” Which surprised me, because I always thought it was my wrinkly skin and balding pate that led to that assessment.

“For example,” she said, “when we went to Bob and Cathy’s for Thanksgiving, you

sat down as soon as we walked in the house, while everyone else was chatting in the front hall.”

“I wasn’t feeling well and I don’t think it’s fair to count the bathroom.”

Then recently, we were shopping on Mass Avenue in Indy. As soon as we walked in a quaint little boutique, I sat down. Mary Ellen noticed.

After we left, she said she was worried.

“When I saw you do that, I thought, oh dear, frail and 100 years old.”

“Well, that’s pretty mean, Mary Ellen.”

“No, Dick. Not you. The chair was 100 years old. We were in an antique store.”

The irony of all this is that sometimes I stand when I should sit. I never sit when

I eat lunch; I stand over the kitchen sink and snarf down a sandwich. Who has time to walk all the way to the table?

Sometimes I don’t even make it to the counter; I just nibble my way from shelf to shelf in the fridge. I only do this when Mary Ellen is away from home, but when she gets back it’s hard to explain mustard and ketchup droppings in the vegetable bin.

I became very obsessive about this standing/sitting thing. I didn’t want Mary Ellen to see me as the “older” man she married, so I checked with her everywhere we went.

“Can I sit here?” I asked one evening.

“Yes, Dick, you can sit there.

We’re in a restaurant.”

That weekend I was still on alert. Maybe overly so.

‘And the winning bid is’ ... original Batmobile finds new home On Jan. 13, 2013, Lot 5037 rolled smoothly onto center stage at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. The sleek, low-slung vehicle, owned by California auto customizer George Barris, glistened like a black diamond under the lights.

Moments later, furious bidding erupted among the well-heeled.

After 13 minutes, it was all over, the buyer elated, the audience stunned. TV’s original Batmobile had found a new home.

— During the 1950s, American car companies held annual auto shows, where attendees were often enthralled by what the factory folks called “concept cars.”

Such boldly designed vehicles were constructed to showcase new styling and technology, but were never offered for sale.

A decade before the Batmobile appeared on TV’s “Batman” show, the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford Motor Company had proudly displayed its Lincoln Futura concept car at the 1955 Chicago Auto Show.

Bill Schmidt, the company’s chief stylist, had been inspired to come up with the design for the Futura one day after he had scrutinized a shark while scuba diving.

Schmidt later designed what

would amount to a “laboratory on wheels,” an experimental machine loaded with advanced — really advanced — engineering and design features. Measuring nearly 19 feet in length, the Futura was 7 feet wide but stood less than 4½ feet high. It sported rakish tail fins, Plexiglas bubble canopies, a pushbutton gearshift and space for a telephone behind the center console.

Most concept cars, expensive as they were to design and build, were eventually scrapped. In this case, though, the Futura was later bought by George Barris. Never titled and therefore uninsurable, the auto sat idle for years, slowly deteriorating behind Barris Kustom City shop in North Hollywood.

In August 1965, two producers from the forthcoming TV show “Batman” approached another California car customizer, Dean Jeffries, about building a Batmobile for the program. Jeffries soon began working on the body of a 1959 Cadillac before realizing he wouldn’t have time to finish the project before the three-week deadline. He was paid off, and the producers turned to Barris.

“They said, ‘You’ve got 15 days and $15,000,’” Barris recalled later. “But the challenge

was worth it. I said, ‘Let’s go for it!’ What I had to create was a fantasy.” He rounded up five people to revamp the Futura.

Barris himself painted it a gloss black and added bright redand-orange trim to help make it “pop” on color television.

Miraculously, the project was completed on time, and the

Batmobile debuted on national TV on Jan. 12, 1966. That’s when the Caped Crusader and Robin first roared out of the Batcave in a gadget-loaded vehicle meant to instill fear in the hearts of Gotham’s lawbreaking louts.

mobile owner set an auction record by paying $4.2 million (plus another $420,000 for the 10% buyer’s premium) to acquire the iconic collectible.

That was quite a markup for George Barris as, decades earlier, Ford had sold him their $250,000 Futura for the princely sum of $1.

Embassy presents ‘Mexico Beyond Mariachi: Trekking Mexico’ The Embassy Theatre presents “Mexico Beyond Mariachi: Trekking Mexico” as a public performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022. This event is a part of the Embassy’s ongoing education programming efforts and is currently on sale to the public.

The organization started the 2021-22 season with a virtual “Learn It Live” program called “Full Steam Ahead Live Vol. 3: When Science Goes Viral,” which was well attended. Other virtual options this season include “Black Violin” in February and March as well as “5 Days With Step Afrika!” in April. The virtual options were born out of the need to adapt education programming in light of limitations with travel and attendance during the pandemic.

The Embassy has historically hosted in-person “Learn It Live” programs that are developed to offer creative art content for educators and students throughout the region. The “Learn It Live” shows allow young audiences to become familiar with the historic theater as well as share in experiencing live artistic presen-

tations. “Learn It Live” events are often at capacity. “Trekking Mexico” will be the first in-person “Learn It Live” program in two years.

“Trekking Mexico” will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 1 and 2. Students will take a deep dive into Mexican folk traditions, both ancient and temporary. This colorful experience takes the audience on a Mexican expedition of historic and geographic regions through folkloric music and dance. The multimedia show will whisk students away on a joyful ride through this culturally rich republic, leaving students with an enhanced awareness of the global community. This event is created for grades K-8.

Embassy Theater calendar of events Built in 1928 as a moving pictures showplace, The Embassy, 125 W. Jefferson Blvd., is the current home of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Embassy is attached to the original Indiana Hotel, and after decades of providing entertainment, closed its doors in 1975 for renovations.

Learn to work with stained glass at Salamonie Lake Salamonie Lake is hosting stained glass classes for beginner and intermediate level artists in January and March 2022 at its Nature Center.

The classes will be taught by local artist Katy Gray and all materials will be provided.

The classes are: A beginner’s one-day stained glass class will be

5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, and 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8. Cost is $30. Participants will learn how to make a red-tailed hawk feather sun catcher.

Multi-day classes designed to create a glass-on-glass framed mosaic image inspired by nature will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Jan. 12, 13,

18, 19, and 22. Participants should plan to attend every class. Cost is $60 per person.

Each participant will choose a bee, red-tailed hawk or box turtle for their project. All materials will be supplied.

A two-day intermediate class will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6, and

5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 9 and 10, to create a bee on a coneflower.

All participants of this class must have had recent stained glass cutting and smoothing experience. Cost is $40, and all materials will be provided.

All classes are geared for adults, but older youth with experience may be accepted.

Delta Sigma Theta honors Women’s Business Center director Leslee Hill The Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. recognized Leslee Hill, director of WEOC Women’s Business Center, for outstanding commitment and service for economic development in the Fort Wayne community.

If it’s a heart attack, look for these signs.

Most attacks involve discomfort in the middle of the chest that can last a few minutes or go away and come back. They feel like you’re being squeezed and can be painful.

This usually is accompanied by a shortness of breath, although this can occur without any chest discomfort.

Other symptoms can be pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw and stomach.

Cuyohoga Valley National Park located in northeast Ohio between Cleveland and Akron covers about 50 square miles and is the only national park in the state. The Cuyohoga River runs through the park. Native Americans named the river Cuyohoga, meaning “crooked river.”

About 100 waterfalls are located in Cuyahoga Valley, with the most popular being 65’ tall Brandywine Falls. Easy to reach, sightseers can reach the waterfall on a wooden boardwalk hooked to a large parking area. Of course a trail is also accessible to the falls, thanks to the many nature routes abundant in the park. Visitors can hike the 20-mile Towpath trail which follows a former stretch of the Ohio and Erie canal.

The Everett Covered Bridge is the only remaining covered bridge in Summit County.

It was built sometime in the 1800s when the Ohio and Erie canal was used to ship products to bigger cities and bridges were needed to cross the canals. Ohio led the nation in covered bridge construction.

Since Cuba’s basically closed, consider visiting Little Havana Going to Cuba to satisfy one of the items on your bucket list has become increasingly difficult.

The U.S. government not only for*5($7 bids Ameri(6&$3(6 can cruise 7H[W $QG 3KRWRV lines to dock %\ 52' .,1* there and has limited American airlines to flights only to Havana, but has eliminated the popular Peopleto-People program that allowed Americans to travel throughout Cuba, meet its people and learn about its culture.

It’s still possible to go to Cuba on one of several other programs (medical, religious, scientific, etc.) but if you do, stick strictly to the itinerary and don’t attempt to work in a day at the beach, because you may be audited when you get home and possibly fined.

There is an alternative that eliminates just about all the hassles of traveling, you don’t need a visa and won’t even need your passport. Instead, head to Miami and visit Little Havana where you can enjoy a big helping of Cuban history and culture. In 2000 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2017 the National Trust for Historic Preservation declared this social, cultural and political center a national treasure.

Just a short distance up Eighth Street is the Paseo de los Estrellas, which is Little Havana’s own Walk of Fame that includes Latin American actors, writers, artists and musicians such as Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz and Willy Chirino, whose stars are embedded in the sidewalk.

This area, (Eighth Street between 14th and 17th avenues) is the headquarters for the free Calle Ocho Festival which has been held on the last Friday of every month for the past four decades. It features outdoor

music on 30 stages, street musicians, art exhibits, hundreds of vendors, educational programs at historic Tower Theater and free walking tours led by Miami historian Dr. Paul George at 7 p.m.

On Friday, March 13, 1988, the festival went into the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the world’s longest conga line that included 119,986 people.

Before taking a stroll through some of the neighborhoods that feature a variety of architecture ranging from bungalow and mission style to Miami modern and Mediterranean revival, drop into the visitor’s center at 1442 S.W. Eighth St. for information on the history and culture of the area.

The amazing adventures of Will Cuppy Editor’s Note: This is the second part of a two-part series. %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU Continuing on from part one, we move forward in learning more of the life and career of Will Cuppy.

While in New York, Will wrote reviews of various books for the New York Tribune newspaper. It was at this newspaper that Will worked with an old college friend, Burton Rascoe, who was a literary editor.

Thanks to Rascoe’s assistant, Isabel Paterson, Will was “coaxed and coddled” … “into writing reviews and making a success of his career as a writer.” It was in 1926 when Will began writing a column each week called “Light Reading” for the New York Tribune’s “successor, The New

York Herald Tribune.” Will wrote his column for 23 years until his death.

Will did not always spend time in an office of the Tribune during his writing career. Apparently suffering from hay fever, and tired of city noise, Will chose to be a “hermit” from “1921 to 1929 in a shack on Jones Island, just off Long Island’s South Shore.”

While on Jones Island, Will wrote a humorous book that he titled “How to be a Hermit,” which gave the readers a glimpse into home economics. The book’s subtitle was “A Bachelor Keeps House,” which reflected on “the fact that Cuppy never married.”

Will gave up his full-time home on Jones Island due to the expansion of New York’s park department. His island home became part of “the new Jones Beach State Park.” He returned to New York but was allowed

to keep his shack, which he frequently returned to until his death.

It was from his apartment in Greenwich Village that Will wrote many books and magazine articles. His real talent was writing true but humorous articles for magazines.

One of Will’s best known work was a satirical book on history that was titled “The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody.”

Another book published in 1931 was titled “How to Tell Your Friends from the Apes.” This was followed in 1941 with “How to Become Extinct.”

During his final years, Will was in poor health and spiraling downward into depression. As the threat of eviction from his Greenwich Village apartment loomed over him, Will “took an overdose of sleeping pills and died 10 days later on Sept. 19, 1949, at St. Vincent’s Hospital.”

Saving time and money when downsizing %\ .857 - 1(66 1HVV %URV 5HDOWRUV $XFWLRQHHUV Recently I was asked to speak to a group called Harvester Engineers Retirement Organization (HERO) that meets at the Towne House Retirement Center about downsizing.

Talking with a few of the retirees before the presentation,

one of them made the comment that their way to downsize was to have a garage sale, only to realize one of their prize possessions ended up selling for five cents.

During my presentation I retold his story and I talked about the fact that people who go to garage sales are looking for a bargain (there is nothing wrong with that), but what hap-

pens is that every item becomes a negotiable.

I talked about selling items through Craig’s list and Facebook, the time involved and the safety issues. Lastly we talked about auctions, specifically online auctions. In today’s culture we seem to always be short on time, and taking three or four hours to attend an auction can be challenging. At one point in

the presentation I held up my iPhone and said this is the new computer of today.

With today’s technology people can be in a car riding to Indianapolis (but please don’t bid and drive), and at the same time be placing bids on personal property or real estate. We have had people from all over the U.S. and in Europe purchase items through our online auc-

tions. It is a fact that 90% of all home buyers start on the Internet shopping for a home. Online auctions have come a long way since eBay first introduced the concept.

Fort Wayne Museum of Art calendar of events Conceived in 1888 when Ottis Adams and William Forsyth began teaching art classes. By 1897, Fort Wayne Museum of Art was formally organized.

The function of the “museum” was created when the school received a 10-painting collection donated by Theodore Thieme

in 1921.

In 1949, the B. Paul Mussman home, located at 1202 W. Wayne St., was donated to the museum, giving the entire museum a facility for the first time.
